Round Knob Picnic Area Introduce
Are you searching for the perfect spot for camping near you in the Greeneville, Tennessee area? Look no further than the Round Knob Picnic Area, located at 195 Round Knob Rd, Greeneville, TN 37743, USA. While officially named a picnic area, this location offers more than just tables and grills, serving as a gateway to outdoor adventures and a potential basecamp for exploring the surrounding natural beauty. For local users seeking convenient camping and outdoor experiences, Round Knob presents a unique opportunity to connect with nature close to home.
Nestled in the scenic landscapes of Greeneville, Round Knob provides a rustic and natural environment for those looking to escape the everyday. The area is characterized by its wooded surroundings and access to hiking trails, offering a chance to immerse yourself in the local flora and fauna. While specific details about designated campsites are not available in the provided information, the presence of picnic facilities and nearby hiking suggests possibilities for a more primitive camping experience for those equipped and prepared. It's important for local users considering camping here to verify regulations regarding overnight stays and permitted camping areas with local authorities or the relevant land management agency to ensure compliance and safety.
The core feature of Round Knob Picnic Area, as its name suggests, is its provision for picnicking. Reviews highlight the presence of a "huge fireplace" ideal for grilling and preparing meals outdoors. Additionally, picnic tables are available, offering a convenient space to enjoy food amidst the natural surroundings. One reviewer also mentioned the presence of a basic bathroom facility, described as an "outhouse" but noted to be stocked with toilet paper, which is a practical amenity for day visitors and potentially campers. Furthermore, a "fresh spring nearby to the picnic area" is a notable feature, potentially providing a source of fresh water, although it is always advisable to treat natural water sources before consumption.
Beyond picnicking, Round Knob serves as an access point to hiking trails in the area. One reviewer mentioned a trail leading "straight down the mountain" with "hardly any switchbacks." This description suggests a potentially steep and challenging trail. The reviewer's comment about the waterfalls not being particularly impressive is subjective, and other local hikers might find the experience worthwhile, especially for the physical exertion and immersion in nature. It's crucial for local users to research and assess the difficulty and features of these trails before embarking on a hike, ensuring they are suitable for their fitness level and experience.
An important consideration for local users planning to visit Round Knob, whether for picnicking or potential camping and hiking, is the presence of wildlife. A reviewer specifically noted "more bear and coyote sightings than normal" in the area, even extending into nearby suburbs. This highlights the need for caution and adherence to wildlife safety guidelines. Local visitors should take precautions such as properly storing food, making noise while hiking, and being aware of their surroundings to minimize the risk of encounters with wildlife. Carrying bear spray is also a recommended safety measure in bear country.
While the provided information doesn't detail specific services like managed campgrounds often offer (e.g., designated campsites, water hookups, electrical connections, waste disposal), the basic amenities of picnic tables, a fireplace/grill, and a rudimentary bathroom suggest a more self-sufficient outdoor experience. Local users who prefer a more developed camping experience with comprehensive services might need to explore other campgrounds in the "camping near me" category that offer such facilities. However, for those seeking a more natural and less structured outing, Round Knob could be an appealing option, provided they come prepared.
In terms of features, the natural spring stands out as a unique asset. Access to a fresh water source can be particularly valuable for longer stays or strenuous activities, although, as mentioned before, treatment is essential. The presence of established picnic spots with fireplaces/grills makes it an ideal location for local families and groups to enjoy outdoor cooking and gatherings. The proximity to hiking trails caters to those interested in exploring the natural landscape and getting some exercise.
Currently, there is no specific promotional information available for Round Knob Picnic Area in the provided text. However, for local users, the inherent appeal lies in its accessibility, natural setting, and the opportunity for free or low-cost outdoor recreation. To attract more local visitors, authorities could consider enhancing the area with clearer trail markings, updated information on wildlife safety, and potentially designated primitive camping spots if regulations allow. Promoting the area as a local hub for outdoor activities through community bulletin boards, local websites, and social media could also increase its visibility.
In conclusion, Round Knob Picnic Area offers local users a blend of picnicking facilities and access to natural hiking trails within the "camping near me" category. While it may not provide the full amenities of a developed campground, its natural environment, picnic provisions, and the presence of a fresh spring make it a potential destination for day trips and possibly primitive camping (subject to local regulations). Local residents should be aware of the reported wildlife activity and take necessary precautions. For those seeking a convenient and relatively undeveloped outdoor experience close to Greeneville, Tennessee, Round Knob Picnic Area warrants consideration. Remember to always check local regulations and advisories before planning any camping or hiking trips.

Round Knob Picnic Area Reviews
The trail has hardly any switchbacks and is straight down the mountain. If the waterfalls were better it might be worth it, but they’re not. I would skip this one unless you’re like me and have to see them all lol.
Apr 09, 2024 · Kipp WhiteWe just decided to go grill and picnic one day and we went to Round Knob. There's a huge fireplace and there is a bathroom like an outhouse though but they had toilet paper too. There's a fresh spring nearby to the picnic area with tables and a barbecue already there but we brought one to use instead. Plenty of places to hike in that area just be careful we've had more bear and coyote sightings than normal, even coming down into suburbs etc
Jul 13, 2024 · Brandy RanlyGreat place to take the family to hike and picnic... beautiful views ❤️
Apr 04, 2022 · CagleConcepts Freelance PhotographerThe road is dangerous, 5 miles of gravel road, single lane with few pull offs, the facility is run down and not maintained. I would only access park with ATV or motorcycle with on / off road tires. It has beautiful views and access to trail systems like all the smokey mountain parks have but there are plenty of better accessible places to enjoy them.
