For those in search of premier "camping near me" in the picturesque region of Hope, Idaho, Sam Owen Campground stands out as a highly recommended destination. Situated at Sam Owen Pk Rd, Hope, ID 83836, USA, this campground offers a stunning natural environment on the shores of the expansive Lake Pend Oreille. Managed by a concessionaire company in partnership with the Forest Service, Sam Owen Campground is earning high praise from visitors for its well-maintained facilities, helpful staff, and unique features that cater to a variety of campers.
Recent reviews from campers provide valuable insights into the current state and appeal of Sam Owen Campground. One review from June 2023 addresses the recovery of the area following wind damage from a couple of years prior. It notes that the landscape has "recovered nicely," with most evidence of the earlier damage, such as remaining stumps, being covered by regrown grasses. However, the review points out that the Red Sun loop, which bore the brunt of the wind, will have many campsites lacking shade for several years due to the loss of trees. In contrast, the upper loops experienced minimal tree loss, with only a couple of sites affected. This information is crucial for campers when selecting their preferred location within the campground, particularly during warmer months when shade can be a significant factor.
Another enthusiastic review highlights the overall positive experience at Sam Owen Campground and its day-use area. The camper specifically commends the concessionaire company running the facility for the Forest Service, stating they are doing a "great job." The helpfulness and kindness of both the host and maintenance personnel are also emphasized, contributing to a welcoming and well-supported camping environment. A standout feature mentioned in this review is the "dog-friendly beach area," which is described as a "serious bonus" that significantly enhanced the family's stay. This amenity makes Sam Owen Campground a particularly attractive option for campers who travel with their canine companions and appreciate having a dedicated space for their dogs to enjoy the water.
The location of Sam Owen Campground on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille is a major draw. Lake Pend Oreille is Idaho's largest and deepest lake, renowned for its crystal-clear waters and breathtaking scenery. Campers at Sam Owen can expect stunning lake views and opportunities for various water-based activities such as swimming, boating, fishing, and kayaking. The presence of a dog-friendly beach further expands the recreational possibilities for families with pets, allowing everyone to enjoy the lake. The natural beauty of the surrounding area, with its forests and potentially hiking trails, adds to the appeal for outdoor enthusiasts.
While the provided information doesn't detail all the specific services and features of Sam Owen Campground, typical Forest Service campgrounds often offer a range of amenities to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable camping experience. These may include well-defined campsites with picnic tables and fire rings, potable water sources, vault toilets, and potentially flush toilets and showers in some areas. Given the positive feedback regarding the maintenance and staff, it's likely that these essential services are well-maintained and readily accessible to campers. The presence of a concessionaire often indicates additional services or a higher level of upkeep compared to strictly Forest Service-run campgrounds.
The mention of a "day use area" alongside the campground suggests that even those not staying overnight can enjoy the scenic beauty and recreational opportunities offered at Sam Owen. This might include picnic areas, access to the lake for swimming or boating, and potentially hiking trails originating from or near the campground. The integration of a dog-friendly beach into this day-use area further enhances its appeal to a broader range of visitors.

Sam Owen Campground Reviews
June 2023The area has recovered nicely from the wind damage a couple of years ago. There isn't a lot of evidence from the earlier damage other than the remaining stumps. Grasses have grown back nicely to cover most of the damage. Red Sun loop which took most of the wind will have many sites without shade for years to come. The upper loops only had a couple of sites that lost trees.
Jun 15, 2023 · Al TodalenLove this campground and day use area! The concessionaire company that are running it for the Forest Service are doing a great job. The host and maintenance people are very helpful and kind. The dog friendly beach area is a serious bonus that made the stay very enjoyable for our family.
Jun 30, 2024 · Debbie WilkinsHad a great experience camping here! The camp sights were clean and well taken care of. It wasn’t overly crowded. The camp hosts were really nice! The water was really clear and I didn’t feel like I was too close to other campers. We had enough space to where we still felt isolated enough and not overhear other campers all day or all night long. The fire pit was just the right size as well and the fire wood provided wasn’t too expensive. The beach is great. The water was surprisingly warm! We went swimming and also kayaking. I will be returning to go camping here again.
May 12, 2022 · Nikolas SteeleWell maintained. Beautiful location. The camp hosts were the best we've ever encountered. Flush toilets. Only 30 minutes from Sandpoint, and Davis Mercantile in Hope is a great little store. Also, you can rent a slip for a boat at Beyond Hope Resort, and it's within walking distance. Finally, there's a really nice (but short) hike right across the street. Overall, one of the better campgrounds I've been to.
Jul 27, 2020 · OwenSam Owen has always been one of our family's favorite spots to camp over the years. It's located in a very beautiful spot on Lake Pend Orielle. The lake is always clear, clean and refreshing. We've camped here many times over Memorial weekend, and also later in the summer. The lake is comfortable later in the summer of course but we've swim a few times in spring as well. The campground lost a ton of trees a couple of years ago due to high winds, so it's quite exposed now. It sadly doesn't have the same privacy it had before, but it's still a great place.Sometimes we'll take a walk over to the Beyond Hope resort area and get a drink at the restaurant there and soak up in the sun and the view from the deck. There's a great pizza place in Hope only a few minutes away, which is a fun addition to a camping trip with the family.
