Environment and Location:
Lunch Peak Lookout is situated in a location that offers "gorgeous views in every direction." This suggests a high vantage point, likely atop Lunch Peak, providing expansive panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape. The proximity to the hike to Mt Pend Oreille, a new favorite for at least one reviewer, indicates that the area is rich in natural beauty and offers excellent opportunities for hiking and exploring the mountains and forests of northern Idaho. The drive to the lookout itself is described as having "very well maintained" roads with minimal traffic, allowing for a pleasant and scenic journey.
The fact that a local resident of over 30 years found the "adventure" to the lookout "breathtaking and well worth it" speaks volumes about the exceptional scenery and the overall appeal of the location. The fall day mentioned in the review suggests that the area is beautiful throughout the seasons, although the experience might vary depending on weather conditions and accessibility, especially during winter months.
Services and Amenities:
The amenities within Lunch Peak Lookout itself are described as "pretty bare." Based on the user review, the interior includes:
- Picnic Table: Providing a surface for eating and other activities.
- Bed Platform: Offering a basic structure for sleeping, likely requiring campers to bring their own sleeping pads and bags.
- New Flooring: Suggesting some level of recent maintenance and an improved interior condition.
- Window Screens in Good Shape: Ensuring ventilation while keeping insects out.
It is crucial to understand that Lunch Peak Lookout is a rustic camping experience. It does not offer standard campground amenities such as restrooms, running water, electricity, or designated campsites. Campers should be fully self-sufficient and prepared to bring all necessary gear, including food, water, cooking equipment, bedding, lighting, and waste disposal bags. - Weather Dependent: The experience will be heavily influenced by weather conditions. Check forecasts and be prepared for potential changes.
- Altitude Considerations: As a lookout tower, it is likely situated at a higher elevation, which may involve cooler temperatures and require appropriate clothing.
- Leave No Trace Ethics: Given the unique and potentially sensitive environment, it is crucial to adhere strictly to Leave No Trace principles, packing out all trash and minimizing impact.

The tower is pretty bare inside, only a picnic table and a bed platform. But the flooring is new and all the window screens are in good shape. If you've rented the tower be prepared for visitors - lots of them! A constant stream of them!Gorgeous views in every direction! A new favorite hike from here to Mt Pend Oreille!
Aug 11, 2023 · Artimus PHave lived here over 30 years and just today decided to take the “adventure”.. It was breathtaking and well worth it. The roads were very well maintained & only saw about 6 cars total. Beautiful Fall day for a wonderful drive👍🏻
Oct 05, 2021 · DebbieBeautiful drive with great views along the way and of course once you get here. Early October is our favorite time to come here. No mosquitos and no snow on the road. Be aware there is no phone service on most of the road here but there is service at the top.
Oct 25, 2022 · Lisa ManskeA little smokey, but the view is still amazing!
Sep 17, 2022 · Eric HappyFantastic 360-degree view with a fire tower that is rentable. You will NEED a high-clearance vehicle to make it to the summit
