Santa Lucia Campground & Chapel Introduce
Santa Lucia Campground & Chapel, located at 46896 CA-1, Big Sur, CA 93920, offers a distinct and serene camping experience in the heart of Big Sur. This privately-owned property, managed by All Saints' Episcopal Church, Carmel-by-the-Sea, is primarily dedicated to providing outdoor and wilderness enjoyment for non-profit organizations, churches, and families associated with All Saints' Church and All Saints Day School. While not a typical public campground listed under "Camping Near Me" for individual bookings, its unique focus on group retreats and its picturesque setting make it a noteworthy option for specific types of users.
The environment at Santa Lucia Campground & Chapel is consistently described as a "beautiful place" and a "sacred space for spiritual and physical renewal." Nestled under the majestic Redwood trees and situated directly on the Big Sur River, it offers a truly idyllic and tranquil setting. Reviewers highlight the feeling of privacy and comfort, which is a significant advantage, especially for group gatherings. The natural surroundings create a peaceful atmosphere, ideal for rest and relaxation. The presence of a rocky beach along the Big Sur River adds to the scenic beauty and provides opportunities for riverside enjoyment, including tubing (though campers must bring their own). The property spans six-and-a-half acres, providing ample space for its campsites while maintaining a sense of seclusion. The natural beauty of the area, combined with the reverence for the space, contributes to a deeply restorative and enjoyable outdoor experience. It's an environment where quiet contemplation and group fellowship can flourish, far removed from the hustle and bustle.
Santa Lucia Campground & Chapel provides services tailored to its primary users: non-profit organizations, churches, and affiliated families. A key service is the provision of three group campsites (Fireside, Redwood Knoll, and Paul's Meadow), designed to accommodate larger gatherings for pitching tents, grilling at open fire pits, and assembling around fire rings at picnic tables or on benches. The campground offers a restroom facility with flush toilets, which reviewers praise for being clean. Fresh drinking water is available from the campground's own well. It is important to note that, as of available information, there is no hot water or showers at the campground itself, and campers are explicitly forbidden from using showers at neighboring campgrounds across the river. However, a Guest Wi-Fi network can be accessed in limited areas, and campers are advised to ask the Camp Hosts for access. Cellular service might be limited in Big Sur, so Wi-Fi access can be a valuable amenity. The campground is staffed by Camp Hosts/Caretakers, Jack and Madison, who are lauded as "great hosts," "super cool and down to earth," and are available for assistance during specific hours. All campers are required to check in and out with the Camp Hosts and submit signed "Release Forms" and "COVID Waiver Forms." Reservations for group campsites are required, often needing to be made up to a year in advance, with an initial 50% deposit. The property also features an Outdoor Chapel, perfectly suited for intimate weddings or small worship services, complete with a rustic altar and fixed wooden bench-style seating. An application process and approval from All Saints' Church are required for wedding use. The campground also adheres to a Diocesan Alcohol Policy, with hard liquor generally not permitted for groups.
The standout features of Santa Lucia Campground & Chapel are its design for group camping and its spiritual offerings. The three distinct group campsites (Fireside, Redwood Knoll, and Paul's Meadow, the latter having been specifically praised by a reviewer for booking) provide ample space for large groups, with capacities ranging (e.g., Paul's Meadow at 16 people). Each site includes essential camping amenities like picnic tables and fire rings. The presence of the Big Sur River running alongside the property allows for pleasant recreational activities such as tubing. The Outdoor Chapel is a unique and significant feature, offering a beautiful natural setting for worship services or intimate weddings, highlighting the campground's spiritual dimension. The dedicated and friendly Camp Hosts/Caretakers, as noted by multiple reviewers, are a key feature that enhances the camping experience, providing a welcoming and supportive atmosphere. The campground's location, being "close to all the cool sites" in Big Sur, allows groups to easily access popular attractions while still enjoying the privacy of their secluded camp. While not explicitly listed as a feature, the campground's operation by All Saints' Episcopal Church implies a commitment to community values and a certain level of care for the property. Rules regarding quiet hours (10 p.m. - 8 a.m.) and vehicle restrictions (no motorhomes, ATVs, sport bikes, or motorcycles due to lack of dumping facilities and low branches) are in place to preserve the serene environment and ensure suitability for the property's specific infrastructure. The ability to reserve these large sites, often a year in advance, underscores their popularity among the target user groups.
Promotional information for Santa Lucia Campground & Chapel emphasizes its unique offering as a privately-owned group camping destination in the iconic Big Sur region. It's positioned as an ideal choice for non-profit organizations, church groups, and All Saints' Church families seeking a "sacred space for spiritual and physical renewal." The focus is on providing a peaceful and comfortable environment for large groups to connect with nature and each other. Testimonials like "Beautiful place and suitable for big group camping" and "Great place to camp! The bathrooms were clean and it felt really private and comfortable" reinforce its suitability for its target audience. The friendly and accommodating nature of the staff, particularly Jack and Madison, is a strong promotional point. The presence of the Outdoor Chapel is also a key promotional feature for those looking to host intimate weddings or outdoor worship services in a stunning natural setting. While not broadly advertised to the general public as a "Camping Near Me" option for individual reservations, its dedicated website and direct contact information ((831) 667-2310 or +1 831-667-2310, and email santalucia@allsaintscarmel.org) serve to attract its specific clientele. The necessity of advance reservations (often a year out) highlights its desirability within its niche. The park's rules and regulations, outlining acceptable vehicle types and quiet hours, are transparently communicated to ensure that prospective groups understand the nature of the experience offered. Ultimately, Santa Lucia Campground & Chapel promotes itself as an exclusive, serene, and well-managed retreat for group gatherings and spiritual enrichment in one of California's most breathtaking natural landscapes.

Apr 10, 2022 · Angel TunGreat place to camp! The bathrooms were clean and it felt really private and comfortable. Great location since it's close to all the cool sites. Jack was a great host and super cool and down to earth. The same can be said of Madison who helped me book the group site called Paul's Meadow. Can't wait to be there again.

Aug 11, 2023 · Liam GeraghtyWow what a lovely little campingground. The host was very kind and offered us a camping spot, even though a group booked the whole place (July 4th weekend) and it was full. There's a small creek running beside the campground, makes for a nice refreshment in the morning. Thanks again to the friendly host for helping us when we needed it most! Truly appreciated!
