We had site 46. Was able to get 40 mbps on Verizon at the picnic table but most of the area you only get 1-2 bars. The site has pine trees providing shade, great for an RV site during the summer. The water spigots are treaded for 3/4" standard garden hoses, so you can easily fill your water tanks. No dump station here but plenty of easy to access restrooms and showers that offer six minutes of hot water for 4 quarters.Generators allowed from 8am to 8pm.The campground itself is absolutely beautiful. Great hiking nearby, lakes with boat ramps within 10 miles.. Bears in the area but really nice bear boxes for every campsite.Great local shops, restaurants, local brewery, even a post office!Campground closes by November. Best time for yellow trees is last two weeks of October. - CJ M

Silver Lake Campground.junelake CA Introduce

Silver Lake Campground, located in June Lake, CA 93529, USA, is a highly sought-after destination for outdoor enthusiasts searching for "Camping Near Me" in the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains. Situated at an elevation of 7,200 feet, this campground offers a breathtaking natural environment, comprehensive services and features for campers, and a gateway to a myriad of recreational activities, making it an ideal base camp for a wilderness adventure.

Environment: A Sub-Alpine Paradise in the Eastern Sierra

The environment at Silver Lake Campground is nothing short of spectacular. Nestled on the shores of the sub-alpine Silver Lake and bordered by Rush Creek, the campground is surrounded by majestic peaks of the Eastern Sierra, including Carson Peak. This creates a stunning backdrop of granite crags, high peaks, and clear waters. The campsites themselves are designed to blend with the natural beauty, with many sites shaded by pine trees, aspens, and willows, providing ample shade which is "great for an RV site during the summer." Some sites even border the creek or the lake, offering picturesque views and easy access to the water.

Silver Lake Campground is an integral part of the renowned June Lake Loop, a scenic 14-mile drive that encompasses four sparkling glacial lakes: June, Gull, Silver, and Grant. This area is famous for its natural beauty and diverse wildlife, including black bears, mountain lions, mule deer, and various fish and birds. The presence of bears necessitates "really nice bear boxes for every campsite," and campers are advised to be "bear aware" by properly storing all food and scented items in approved containers or locked inside their vehicles. The campground typically operates seasonally, closing by November, with "best time for yellow trees is last two weeks of October," indicating stunning fall foliage.

The climate in June Lake, CA, is characterized by pleasant summers and distinct winters. Summers generally see temperatures in the upper 70s during the day and lows around 50 degrees at night, creating ideal conditions for outdoor activities. Visitors should prepare for colder weather in spring and fall due to the high elevation. Precipitation averages around 11 inches annually, with June being a relatively dry month, while January experiences more rainfall/snowfall. The high elevation (7,200 feet) means visitors should exercise caution, especially if traveling from lower elevations.

Services and Features: Convenience and Comfort in the Wilderness

Silver Lake Campground offers a range of services and features designed to make camping comfortable and enjoyable, even in a rustic setting. For RV and tent campers searching "Camping Near Me" with specific needs, these details are crucial:

  • Campsites: The campground has 62 to 63 non-electric sites, with a mix of open areas and shaded spots. Sites can accommodate vehicles up to 40 feet, and are equipped with picnic tables, campfire rings, and bear-proof lockers for food storage. Each single site typically allows one RV or one vehicle for a tent site, with a limit of two vehicles for double sites. An extra vehicle may be allowed for an additional fee if the parking spur can accommodate it.

  • Water and Restrooms: Potable water is available at the campground, with "water spigots treaded for 3/4" standard garden hoses," making it easy to fill RV water tanks. The campground provides flush toilets, which are a convenience in a wilderness setting. Showers are also available and offer "six minutes of hot water for 4 quarters."

  • Generators: For RV users, generators are allowed during specific hours, typically from "8 am to 8 pm," providing flexibility for power needs while respecting quiet hours (10 pm to 6 am).

  • Bear Boxes: As this is active bear country, "bear boxes for every campsite" are a critical feature. These food lockers (typical size 48"x 30"x 36") are provided to ensure proper food storage and minimize human-wildlife encounters. Campers are strictly advised to use them and keep a clean camp.

  • Cell Service: While a review noted site 46 could get "40 mbps on Verizon at the picnic table," it also cautioned that "most of the area you only get 1-2 bars," indicating limited but sometimes available cell service. This is a common factor in remote wilderness areas.

  • Proximity to Amenities: Within easy walking distance of the campground, visitors can find a "small store, cafe, hiking trailhead, and pack station." This provides convenient access to basic supplies, food, and resources for outdoor activities.

  • No Dump Station: It's important for RV campers to note that there is "No dump station here," meaning arrangements for wastewater disposal will need to be made elsewhere, likely at nearby campgrounds or facilities on the June Lake Loop.

Promotional Information and Recreational Opportunities: A Hub for Outdoor Adventure

This area features "glacial lakes, granite crags, and peaks above 13,000 feet." Moderate nearby day hikes include the Gull Lake Loop and the June Lake Loop. Overnight backcountry trips into the Inyo Wilderness require special permits.

  • Biking: The June Lake area provides diverse biking options, from easy loops around Horseshoe Lake to challenging climbs up to Mammoth Ski Area. Road biking on the scenic June Lake Road is also popular for experienced cyclists.

  • Local Attractions: The small town of June Lake, within easy reach, offers "great local shops, restaurants, local brewery, even a post office!" This provides essential conveniences and dining options for campers. Other nearby attractions include Mono Lake and Yosemite National Park, which are great day trips.

Silver Lake Campground can be reserved through Recreation.gov or by calling (877) 444-6777 or +1 877-444-6777. Due to its popularity and seasonal operation (typically April/May to September/October, depending on snowpack), it is highly recommended to make reservations in advance, especially during peak season. Fees are $32 per night for a single site, with an additional $10 per night for an extra vehicle. Interagency Senior and Access passes offer a 50% discount on single campsites.
