Sweetwater Campground - Allatoona Lake Introduce
For local users in the Canton, Georgia area searching for "camping near me" near the popular Allatoona Lake, Sweetwater Campground, located at 1400 Fields Chapel Rd, Canton, GA 30114, presents itself as a lakeside camping option. They can be reached by phone at (678) 721-6700 or mobile at +1 678-721-6700. Recent customer reviews offer insights into the campground's amenities and environment, but also highlight a significant issue with ants that potential visitors should be aware of.
One positive aspect noted in a review is that the campsites, while described as "small," were adequate for a group of eight people who were able to split between two adjoining sites. This suggests that while individual sites might not be overly spacious, the campground can accommodate larger groups by offering adjacent sites. This could be a beneficial feature for local users planning group camping trips or family reunions.
Each campsite at Sweetwater Campground appears to be equipped with several useful amenities. According to one reviewer, each site has its own water spigot and fire pit, which includes an attached grill. These are essential for basic camping needs, providing access to water for cooking and cleaning, and a designated area for campfires and grilling food. Additionally, each site has a picnic table, a standard and convenient feature for outdoor dining and activities. Another unique feature mentioned is a laundry line pole, which, in this case, was creatively used to hang trash bags, suggesting a degree of flexibility in how campers utilize the site's infrastructure.
The environment around the campsites seems to have some natural elements, as indicated by the presence of ants and the proximity to Allatoona Lake, which is known for its recreational opportunities. One reviewer mentioned not having issues with larger critters, possibly due to the presence of their two dogs. However, they did note a significant problem with "quite a few black ants that just randomly appeared covering any food stuffs on the ground (i.e. food prep n dog food)." This indicates that while the area might be free of larger pests, smaller insects could be a nuisance, particularly around food.
The potential for enjoying water activities on Allatoona Lake is also mentioned, with the reviewer stating, "as it gets hotter im sure the lake will become a popular swim/water sport spot." This suggests that Sweetwater Campground offers access to the lake, making it appealing for local users interested in swimming, boating, fishing, or other water-based recreational activities during warmer months.
However, a second review paints a less favorable picture due to a severe ant infestation. This reviewer described the campground as "beautiful" initially but reported that their site was "infested with ants!" The infestation was so severe that ants got "all over our camper, all inside, and in our bed the night w other." This level of infestation significantly impacted their camping experience, making it impossible to even sit outside comfortably without being covered in ants. The reviewer also noted that upon their departure, their neighbors' car became infested, indicating a potentially widespread issue within the campground.
Despite bringing the issue to the attention of the front office, the reviewer stated that "they said they couldn’t do anything about it." This lack of resolution or assistance in dealing with the ant problem is a significant concern for potential campers. It suggests that the campground management might not have effective pest control measures in place or may not be responsive to such issues reported by guests.
The stark contrast between the two reviews highlights a potential inconsistency in the camping experience at Sweetwater Campground. While one reviewer found the amenities and lake access appealing and was willing to return, the other experienced a severe pest problem that significantly detracted from their stay and appeared to be unaddressed by the management.
Based on this information, the environment of Sweetwater Campground includes proximity to Allatoona Lake and individual campsites equipped with water spigots, fire pits with grills, and picnic tables. However, there is a notable issue with ant infestations that can severely impact the camping experience.
The services offered appear to include the provision of individual campsite amenities. However, the lack of action taken regarding the reported ant infestation raises concerns about the overall level of service and responsiveness to guest issues. Information about other standard campground services such as restroom and shower facilities, laundry (despite the mention of a laundry line pole at each site, a communal laundry facility is not mentioned), trash disposal, or recreational facilities (beyond lake access) is not provided in the reviews.
The features of Sweetwater Campground include individual campsites with water spigots, fire pits with attached grills, and picnic tables. The proximity to Allatoona Lake for water activities is also a significant feature. However, the persistent and potentially widespread ant infestation is a major negative feature that cannot be ignored.
The provided reviews do not contain any promotional information for Sweetwater Campground. Local users interested in discounts, seasonal rates, or any special offers would need to contact the campground directly using the provided phone numbers or search for their website for more information.
In conclusion, Sweetwater Campground at Allatoona Lake offers the appeal of lakeside camping and well-equipped individual campsites. However, the significant and unaddressed issue with ant infestations, as reported by one reviewer, is a serious concern that local users must consider. While another reviewer had a more positive experience, the severity of the ant problem described in the second review suggests a potential risk to the comfort and enjoyment of any camping trip at this location. Local users are strongly advised to inquire about the current status of pest control measures at the campground before making a reservation. The potential for lake activities and the provided campsite amenities might be attractive, but the unresolved ant issue could outweigh these benefits for many.

Sweetwater Campground - Allatoona Lake Reviews
Sites were small, but perfect for our group of 8 to split between 2 adjoining ones. Each site appears to have its own spicket and firepit (and attached grill!!), plus a picnic table and a laundry line pole which we used to hang our trash bags on. We didnt have any issues with critters getting into things (although the 2 dogs may have detered anything), but there were quite a few black ants that just randomly appeared covering any food stuffs on the ground (i.e. food prep n dog food), but no fire ants as far as I could tell. Would absolutely come back in a heart beat, as it gets hotter im sure the lake will become a popular swim/water sport spot.
Apr 27, 2025 · Jamieson LivingstonThe campground was beautiful! Not a bad one but our site was infested with ants! They got all over our camper, all inside, and in our bed the night w other. I went to speak with the front and they said they couldn’t do anything about it. We couldn’t even sit outside without having them crawl all over us! When we left, our neighbors car got infested. They really need to take care of this!
Aug 09, 2024 · Marie WehrThe Campsite was nice except for a lot of trash was thrown down the hill from the campsite with soda & beer cans. The bathrooms were dirty and had no hand soap. The cleaner would park in front of the bathroom where she spent an hour on her phone and I don't think she ever went inside the bathroom. They are now under County Management where check-out is 11:00am. We were still packing up at 11:05am, along came the Park Ranger and said if we are not out of here in 20 minutes he was going to issue me a Citation. I said I would be happy to extend my stay for another day and he said no, and told me that was not an option and the citation was going to be a lot more than an extra day. Then he returned 10 minutes later and proceeded to watch us pack in a frenzy. I think the Park Ranger hated his job and this probably added a little more excitement to his job and issuing a citation would be his highlight of the day.So buyer be aware, if you want to be stopped and threatened by the Gestapo, be out by 11:00am.
Sep 02, 2024 · Robert AchtenbergThe three of us stayed Father’s Day weekend. The neighbors had about four sites for a large party many cars. They would start their partying around 1030 after quiet time crank up their music loud laugh loud holler loud bright lights until 2 AM at least. They were allowed all day too, but that’s not against the rules. They gathered at one site approximately 20 to 30 people. No one slept until after they finished. They also used an airsoft pistol to shoot into the water. I was told this is illegal. They did this a lot the next day. I complained to the host they said that I could call the sheriff. I told them they need to regulate and enforce the rules. He said they would send out a Ranger. We did see a Ranger drive-by never stopped. second night same thing, they also ran a generator all night long and all day. Before we arrived, we asked if they allow generators on the sites or anywhere and they said no. So this is a warning to people who do obey the rules that you can expect lots of people not obeying any kind of rules doing what they want to do at any time of the day or night. You are on your own. The host does nothing to help you. I’m not sure what their job is.?? We have camped at Sweetwater for over 20 years. But for the last two years, it has gone to the dogs. This was extreme. We will not be camping anymore at the Corps of Engineers. They don’t care. They just want you to make a reservation and pay them the money, there is no service or enforcements. The bathrooms were a wreck all the time.
Jun 16, 2024 · Jean PfielWas super hot and crowded. But, I had a good semi private spot and everything was clean. Somewhat. Only thing I hated is I wanted to just stay one night and they don't allow the purchase of one night on the weekends. So if you want to stay there, you'll be paying for two nights on a weekend whether you're there or not.
