Tar Hollow State Park Resident Camp Introduce
For local users seeking "camping near me" with a unique twist, the Tar Hollow State Park Resident Camp near Kingston, OH 45644 presents an intriguing option. More than just a traditional campground, this facility offers a blend of rustic accommodation, event spaces, and a glimpse into its history as a former 4H camp. If you're looking for a venue for a group gathering, a wedding with a natural backdrop, or simply a different kind of overnight stay in the Tar Hollow State Park area, this location warrants consideration.
While the name includes "Resident Camp," it's important for local users searching for "camping near me" to understand that this facility functions somewhat differently from typical campgrounds with individual campsites. Reviews highlight the presence of a central "lodge" building, which appears to serve as a historic event center and a central hub for various activities. One reviewer with past experience as a 4H camper and employee provides valuable insights into the layout and amenities of the camp.
The accommodation primarily consists of electric cabins situated on two hills extending into the surrounding forest from the lodge. It's crucial to note, as pointed out in a review, that these cabins are basic and intended primarily for sleeping. They do not come equipped with refrigerators or air conditioning. Therefore, if you are expecting a "luxury" camping experience with modern amenities within your sleeping quarters, these cabins might not meet your needs. However, for those seeking simple shelter in a natural setting, they offer a more structured alternative to tent camping.
Convenience is provided through shower houses located on either side of the cabin hills, offering communal facilities for guests staying in this section of the camp. This addresses a fundamental need for overnight stays and aligns with the traditional summer camp setup.
The central lodge building itself is a significant feature of the Tar Hollow State Park Resident Camp. It boasts a full cafeteria kitchen, making it well-suited for serving meals to larger groups. This is a significant advantage for events or gatherings where on-site catering is desired. Additionally, the lodge offers two open restrooms for the convenience of its users. A massive fireplace within the lodge adds to its rustic charm and could provide a focal point for gatherings during cooler times of the year.
Beyond the interior, the lodge features a covered porch and a giant open space adjacent to it. This open area is described as perfect for events such as weddings or parties, suggesting that the Resident Camp serves not only as accommodation but also as a potential venue for celebrations and large gatherings. The natural surroundings of Tar Hollow State Park would undoubtedly provide a scenic backdrop for such events.
For recreational activities, the camp offers a basketball court located out front, providing an opportunity for some outdoor fun and exercise. A small shelter is also present near the court, potentially offering a shaded area for breaks or gatherings.
While one reviewer expressed apprehension about the lake water, this comment seems to be a personal observation and not necessarily a reflection of the overall environment of the Resident Camp itself. It's important to consider that Tar Hollow State Park encompasses a lake, and individual opinions on water quality can vary.
The overall sentiment from the reviews suggests that Tar Hollow State Park Resident Camp is a "great" place, particularly when its history and intended purpose as a summer camp are understood. It's crucial for local users searching for "camping near me" to adjust their expectations accordingly and recognize that this facility offers a different kind of experience compared to standard campgrounds with individual, amenity-rich sites.
In summary, Tar Hollow State Park Resident Camp offers the following features and potential services for local users:
- Historic Event Center ("The Lodge"): Featuring a full cafeteria kitchen, open restrooms, and a large fireplace.
- Rustic Electric Cabins: Basic sleeping accommodations without refrigerators or air conditioning, spread across two hills.
- Communal Shower Houses: Located on either side of the cabin areas.

Tar Hollow State Park Resident Camp Reviews
Very nice historic event center, first time there.
Nov 13, 2024 · Alan LaDukeAs a past 4H camper and employee, I can tell you everything you need to know about this place. People call it the "lodge," and splitting off of it are 2 hills with electric cabins (no, they dont have fridges or A/C they are literally just to sleep in. Cry me a river.) going both directions into the forest as well as a showerhouse on either side. There is a building behind the lodge that is usually reserved as a medical bay and even further behind that is a bonfire bay and even FURTHER back into the woods is the outdoor amphitheater which you would never even know about unless you've been back there. The lodge itself has a full cafeteria kitchen and 2 open restrooms as well as a massive fireplace. There's also a covered porch and giant open space perfect for weddings or parties. Also, they have a basketball court out front and a small shelter. The place is great, honestly, even if the lakewater scares me. Just dont go in expecting a "luxury" experience. It's a summer camp.
