The positive reviews from recent visitors highlight its cleanliness, family-friendly atmosphere, and access to enjoyable activities.
Nestled within the rugged and picturesque terrain of Tar Hollow State Park, Ross Hollow Campground is likely surrounded by the natural beauty that characterizes this region of southeastern Ohio. Expect to find yourself immersed in woodlands, with opportunities for hiking and exploring the diverse flora and fauna of the area. The mention of stargazing ("those stars at night are worth it") suggests a location with minimal light pollution, offering excellent views of the night sky. The presence of a swimming area and a dock indicates proximity to a body of water, likely providing opportunities for swimming, fishing, and other water-related activities. The overall environment seems conducive to a relaxing and nature-focused camping experience.
Based on customer reviews, Tar Hollow State Park Ross Hollow Campground offers a range of services and facilities to enhance the camping experience. The shower house is noted to be "kept clean," although one reviewer mentioned that the "shower pressure was low." This is a common trade-off in some outdoor settings, but the cleanliness is a significant positive. The campground has a mix of restroom facilities, with "only one modern toilet house but lots of pit toilets that are decent (for pit toilets)." This indicates that while modern facilities might be limited, the pit toilets are maintained to a satisfactory standard. Access to potable water is generally expected at state park campgrounds, though specific details about the location and availability within Ross Hollow Campground are not provided in the reviews.
A significant feature highlighted by multiple reviewers is the family-friendly nature of the campground. One reviewer specifically mentioned taking their grandchildren there for three days and having a "great time." The presence of a designated swimming area with a dock that kids can safely jump off of ("safe! :) for all ages!") is a major draw for families with children. This suggests that the campground prioritizes safety and provides amenities that cater to a younger audience. The overall atmosphere is described as "safe n quiet," further enhancing its appeal for families seeking a peaceful and secure camping environment.
While specific details about campsite types (e.g., electric, non-electric, primitive) are not provided in the reviews, the fact that visitors stayed for multiple days suggests the availability of suitable sites for both shorter and longer stays. The comment about cellular service being a "big zero" is an important consideration for those who rely on mobile connectivity. However, as the reviewer noted, this lack of service contributes to the excellent stargazing opportunities, offering a different kind of connection – with nature and the cosmos.
The phone numbers provided, (740) 887-4818 and +1 740-887-4818, offer a direct means of contacting the campground for reservations and inquiries. Given the positive reviews, especially regarding its suitability for families, it is advisable to call ahead to check availability, particularly during peak camping seasons and weekends. When making a reservation, it would be prudent to inquire about campsite types, water access points, and the location of the modern restroom facilities in relation to potential campsites.
Promotional information such as discounts or special offers is not mentioned in the provided reviews. However, the overall positive sentiment and the features highlighted (clean facilities, swimming area, family-friendly environment, stargazing) serve as strong implicit endorsements for the campground. For local users seeking a "camping near me" destination that prioritizes cleanliness, safety, and offers recreational activities for families, Tar Hollow State Park Ross Hollow Campground appears to be a highly recommended choice.
In summary, Tar Hollow State Park Ross Hollow Campground in Laurelville, OH, offers a well-maintained and family-friendly "camping near me" experience within the scenic Tar Hollow State Park. With clean restrooms and showers (though with low pressure in the showers), a safe swimming area with a dock, and excellent stargazing opportunities due to limited cellular service, it provides a peaceful and enjoyable natural getaway. The positive feedback from families and the emphasis on safety and cleanliness make it a strong contender for local campers. To ensure a spot and gather specific information about campsite options and amenities, contacting the campground directly at (740) 887-4818 or +1 740-887-4818 is highly recommended.

Tar Hollow State Park Ross Hollow Campground Reviews
Nicely kept little campground is perfect for a getaway. Shower pressure was low but the shower house was kept clean. There is only one modern toilet house but lots of pit toilets that are decent (for pit toilets). Cellular service is a big zero but those stars at night are worth it. Lots here for the kids to do!
Aug 18, 2019 · Vic NoëlWe took our grand kids camping there for 3 days! We had a great time very clean restrooms n showers. Great place to swim at, even a dock for the kids to jump off of, it safe! :) for all ages! Safe n quiet we loved it!! We will come back!!
Sep 26, 2020 · Cheryl SwancigerThe campground was clean, staff was nice, kids had a ton fun swimming, riding bikes, fishing, catching frogs, etc. close to hiking. No cell service but you can use the wifi at the general store. That was the best thing is no phone service you and the kids actually can talk to each other and hangout! It was perfect!
Sep 05, 2023 · Robin SlovenskiThere is Verizon cell service in park. Does have open wfi at camp store only. But park is clean.
Aug 06, 2024 · Dave BurrisThe park was mostly closed for the late fall/ winter season but the camping, showers and restrooms are open all year. Showers and other facilities were clean and well serviced. The most attractive state campgrounds I have visited because of the remote area and it has much fewer people giving it a wild natural atmosphere. I saw what I believed were bobcats on several occasions. Sighting dear was plentiful. If you like hiking, hunting, and camping in the woods there are many options. Cabins, shelters, tent or motor homes hookups are available if you plan a bit ahead. We were there in the first week of Nov. And there were some open sites. My husband and our dog loved the time there. Our favorite state park.
