The environment surrounding Taum Sauk Mountain Campground is characterized by its natural, often shaded terrain and its proximity to significant natural landmarks. The reviews highlight the immediate access to the Mina Sauk Falls trail, which offers a diverse hiking experience. As one reviewer described, the trail begins with an easy paved walkway before transitioning to crunchy gravel and eventually some stretches of "very rocky trail" requiring "agile footwork." This variety suggests that the area caters to different levels of hiking ability, while still offering a sense of natural adventure. The presence of "an outcropping of large boulders where people were enjoying the view" indicates scenic viewpoints along the trail, providing opportunities to pause and appreciate the landscape. The trail to Mina Sauk Falls is mostly shaded by the forest canopy, making it a pleasant hike even on warmer days, although one reviewer noted that it felt longer than the stated 1.2 miles one way, with their fitness tracker recording a total of 3.4 miles.
The campground itself is described as having "lots of pretty private spaces," which is a significant draw for campers seeking solitude and a sense of immersion in nature. One visitor who stayed in November 2023 noted that there was only one other site occupied, suggesting that the campground can offer a secluded experience, particularly during the off-season. This privacy enhances the feeling of being away from it all and allows for a more intimate connection with the natural surroundings.
Several amenities are mentioned in the reviews. Campsite number one, and reportedly number two as well, feature a "large platform for the tent," which is a notable benefit, especially for tent campers as it provides a level and often drier surface. These sites are also believed to be handicapped accessible, indicating an effort to accommodate a range of visitors. Each campsite appears to be equipped with essential camping provisions, including a "picnic table" for outdoor dining and a "fire pit" for campfires and cooking. The convenience of a "short walk to the restroom" is also mentioned, highlighting the accessibility of basic facilities.
However, it's crucial for potential visitors to be aware of seasonal limitations. One reviewer pointed out that "normally, there is water available, but they turn it off in November through March or April," emphasizing the need to "make sure you bring your own if you’re winter camping." This is a critical piece of information for anyone planning to camp during the colder months and underscores the importance of self-sufficiency regarding water supply during this period.
A significant feature of Taum Sauk Mountain Campground is its direct accessibility to key attractions in the area. The reviews mention that "you can easily walk to the overlook and Mina Sauk trailhead from the campsite." This prime location allows campers to effortlessly explore the stunning views from Taum Sauk Overlook, the highest point in Missouri, and to embark on the hike to Mina Sauk Falls without the need for additional travel from the campground. This convenience greatly enhances the appeal for those primarily interested in experiencing these natural wonders.

Taum Sauk Mountain Campground Reviews
The trail starts easily with a paved walkway for about .2 miles. Then it changes into gravel which is crunchy but easy to walk on. There are a few stretches of very rocky trail. There is an outcropping of large boulders where people were enjoying the view. You will need agile footwork in some places. The falls were more like a cascading stream with many small pools. We saw tadpoles in one of the pools. It is peaceful to sit by the falls and listen to the babbling water. It seemed longer than 1.2 miles one way but the trail is mostly shaded by the canopy. My fitness tracker said 3.4 total.

We were there November 2023, and there was only one other site occupied. We were in campsite number one, and it had a large platform for the tent, as did number two. I think they are both considered handicapped sites.Picnic table, fire pit, and just a short walk to the restroom.Normally, there is water available, but they turn it off in November through March or April, so make sure you bring your own if you’re winter camping. You can easily walk to the overlook and Mina Sauk trailhead from the campsite
Nov 11, 2023 · Leslie SmithThe picnic area is surprisingly level considering your on the highest mountain in Missouri. Has adequate but primitive facilities available. Handicapped access restrooms and picnic area, and peaceful with an air of tranquility.
Aug 26, 2023 · Edward BerryIt's our favorite place to tent camp. There are 12 primitive sites, each with a picnic table and a fire pit. There are vaulted toilets and potable water at the entrance. No reservations, so come early to claim your spot. $15 a night on the honor system.
May 26, 2023 · Kurt BoemlerEasily my favorite place to hike and camp. This park has a beautiful waterfall along the hiking trail, a tall lookout tower and clean campsites.
