Trailway Campground Introduce
For those searching for exceptional "camping near me" in the Montague and Whitehall areas of Michigan, Trailway Campground presents a unique opportunity to experience the charm of a small, privately feeling campground with the convenience of a downtown location. Situated at 4540 Dowling St, Montague, MI 49437, this city-owned campground offers a delightful basecamp for exploring the local attractions and natural beauty. You can reach them by phone at (231) 894-4903 or +1 231-894-4903 for inquiries and reservations.
Trailway Campground offers a distinct layout, with the front section primarily featuring back-in sites often occupied by long-term residents. The back half of the campground, accessible via a short, one-lane bridge with a sturdy steel girder support system, presents a mix of both pull-through and back-in sites suitable for various RV sizes, including larger rigs. While navigating the bridge with longer RVs requires a relatively straight approach, it is designed to accommodate heavier vehicles. All campsites feature gravel pads and well-maintained grass lawns, with most also including a convenient concrete patio and a picnic table, enhancing your outdoor living space.
When considering "camping near me," the availability of essential amenities is often a key factor. Trailway Campground provides bathrooms located at the back of the office building, along with a practical camp sink for dishwashing and other needs. Additionally, a public bathhouse associated with the renowned Hart-Montague Bicycle Trail is easily accessible from the rear of the campground, offering further convenience for guests. For waste disposal, a dump station and a single large dumpster are conveniently located along the main campground road. Furthermore, an overflow parking area on a grassy section at the back of the campground accommodates extra vehicles that may not fit on shorter sites.
While Trailway Campground doesn't have a dedicated dog park, its location adjacent to the Hart-Montague Bicycle Trail provides ample opportunities for walking your furry companions amidst scenic surroundings. The trail bordering the campground on two sides not only offers excellent dog-walking options but also serves as a fantastic way to explore the local area by bike or on foot. Early morning strolls along the trail may even reward you with sightings of local wildlife, including waterfowl, rabbits, and deer.
For those who rely on connectivity while "camping near me," Trailway Campground offers both cellular service and Wi-Fi. While one guest initially experienced weak Verizon Jetpack service upon arrival, the connection significantly improved the following day, reaching impressive speeds suitable for streaming video. Similarly, AT&T smartphone users reported excellent 5G speeds. The campground's Wi-Fi also proved to be reliable, offering decent download and upload speeds. This combination of connectivity options ensures that guests can stay in touch and entertained during their stay.
However, the true gem of Trailway Campground, and a significant draw for those searching "camping near me," is its exceptional location. Situated right in downtown Montague, the campground is conveniently next door to a large grocery store and a delightful ice cream shop, making everyday necessities and treats easily accessible. Moreover, within a short walking distance, campers can explore a variety of bars and restaurants in both Montague and the neighboring town of Whitehall, offering a diverse culinary scene. The proximity to local shops and even breweries adds to the appeal, providing entertainment and convenience without the need for extensive travel.
The immediate access to the Hart-Montague Bicycle Trail is another major highlight for outdoor enthusiasts. This paved, multi-use trail is perfect for cycling, walking, and running, allowing campers to effortlessly explore the scenic beauty of the area and even use it as a car-free way to reach local attractions in Montague and Whitehall. The trail's accessibility directly from the campground enhances the overall camping experience, promoting an active and engaging stay.
Despite its proximity to wetlands, one reviewer noted that they experienced no issues with mosquitos during their stay, which is a significant plus for those considering "camping near me" during warmer months in Michigan. This suggests that the location offers the benefits of being near natural environments without the common nuisance of excessive insects.
While one review mentions that the campsites aren't the biggest, the overwhelming sentiment is that Trailway Campground's prime location and overall appeal make it a highly desirable destination. In fact, it's described as a "hidden gem" where reservations are often hard to come by, emphasizing the importance of booking early. This popularity among local users underscores the campground's excellent reputation and the value it offers to those seeking "camping near me" with a blend of natural access and urban convenience.
In conclusion, Trailway Campground offers a unique and highly sought-after "camping near me" experience in the Montague and Whitehall area. Its location in downtown Montague provides unparalleled access to grocery stores, restaurants, shops, and breweries, all within walking or biking distance via the adjacent Hart-Montague Bicycle Trail. The campground itself offers well-maintained sites with essential amenities, and the friendly atmosphere makes it a welcoming destination for both short and longer stays. While reservations are recommended due to its popularity, Trailway Campground promises a memorable camping experience that combines the tranquility of the outdoors with the convenience of urban amenities, making it a true local favorite.

Trailway Campground Reviews
We stayed here for a week while meeting up with relatives who were vacationing in Grand Haven. The campground is owned by the city of Montague but has the look and feel of a small private campground. We made our reservation via email and then paid half of what we owed for our stay online, paying the rest of it when we arrived. We were given a campground map with WiFi connection info and the bathroom codes at check-in, and were offered a cable box (which we declined). The front half the campground is mostly back-in sites occupied by long-term residents. The back half of the campground begins on the other side of a short, one-lane bridge with wooden beams supported by steel girders underneath. It's strong enough to handle heavier rigs like ours, but you want you make sure your approach to the bridge is relatively straight if your rig is long. The sites in the back half are a mix of pull-throughs and back-ins. All of the sites have gravel pads and grass lawns, and most have a concrete patio with a picnic table. Most sites have a least one shade-providing tree, but sites 43 and 44 do not. Our FHU site (43) was level and was more than long enough to fit our 37-foot fifth wheel and 21-foot truck. But if you have a long RV like ours, you're better off taking the long way around and entering site 43 via a right turn; making the left turn is tricky because it's a sharp turn and the power pole is at the back of the pad. There are bathrooms at the back of the office building, along with a camp sink. There is also a public bathhouse associated with the Hart-Montague Bicycle Trail that is easily accessible from the back of the campground. The dump station and the single large dumpster are along the main road of the campground. There is a section of grass at the back of the campground that serves as a parking lot for towing/towed cars that don't fit into the shorter sites. There is no dog park, but there were plenty of places to walk our dog along the bike trail. When we first arrived (on a Monday), we couldn't get any service on our Verizon Jetpack with MIMO antenna. The signal strength was weak so I tried bumping it up with my cell booster, with no luck. But early the next day (without the booster), I got 60 Mbps down and 8 up, and from that point on we had no problem streaming video except for a few brief slowdowns. The best speed test I ran on my 5G AT&T smartphone showed 94 Mbps down and 16 up. The campground WiFi was pretty good, with 17 Mbps down and 7 up.The real appeal of this campground is the location. It's next door to a large grocery store and an ice cream shop, and within walking distance to multiple bars and restaurants in both Montague and Whitehall. The Hart-Montague Bicycle Trail which borders the campground on two sides is a great way to get around, and you can see a mix of wildlife along the trail in the early morning (mainly waterfowl, rabbits and deer). Despite being close to wetlands, we didn't have any issues with mosquitos during our stay.We would stay here again if we were in the area.
Jun 26, 2023 · Brian SwartzfagerThis campground is located in a great area right downtown Montague. It is next to the lake, a bike trail, river with fishing and The best part is the local restaurants, shops, and breweries as well. The campsite aren’t the biggest but good luck getting a reservation. They rarely have opening. So book early this is a hidden gem!!
Sep 27, 2023 · Kris PostyWonderful little campground! The grounds were immaculate and other campers were consistently warm and inviting. The adjacent bike trail is beautiful and goes for miles, plus they have some fun coffee shops and breweries within walking distance. We typically stay in state parks but loved this little gem! Nice job management team!
Aug 07, 2020 · Janet NIt's very cozy. Definitely a regular campground feel. Not deep in the woods or anything. Excellent customer service and Sufficient restrooms
Jul 08, 2024 · JoeA hidden gem. The park is well kept and the management was great. Our site was shady and the weather was perfect for mid-August. We saw the best vintage car and truck parade ever while sitting directly in front of our campground. We walked to the grocery store (about 50 feet) and ice cream place (75 feet) from our site. We stayed for a week in our 38 ft. Motorhome. We are looking forward to returning to Michigan and this campground.
