Upper Tent Meadow campsite

365016 County Road 9, Elkhart, IN 46514, USA

5.0
The Lower Tent Meadow campsite area was right off the trail, in the trees (no view) and next to a reliable water source. This, the Upper Tent Meadow campsite area, is next to a stream that was running in late Sept 2016 but the ranger warned me it does dry up late in some years. It was not clear to me exactly where the campsite area was, but this location is close to the stream and had several side trails. Still I moved on and up a ways and ended up in an OK campsite that was clearly used by others. The views here were worth the effort going past the Lower Tent Meadows site. - Dave Wiltzius

Upper Tent Meadow campsite Introduce

For those truly seeking a rugged and rewarding outdoor experience within the "Camping Near Me" sphere, the Upper Tent Meadow campsite offers a distinctly primitive and scenic backcountry option. Located near 365016 County Road 9, Elkhart, IN 46514, USA, this is not your typical drive-up campground with amenities, but rather a wilderness area designed for experienced campers who are comfortable with self-sufficiency and the challenges of the backcountry. It appeals to adventurers looking for solitude and the reward of natural beauty that often requires some effort to reach.

The environment of Upper Tent Meadow campsite is defined by its natural, undeveloped setting. Unlike its counterpart, Lower Tent Meadow, which is described as being directly off the trail and within trees with no specific views, the Upper Tent Meadow offers a more expansive and scenic experience. While its precise location within the broader area might not be immediately obvious, with several side trails contributing to the sense of wilderness, the key draw is its elevated position and the panoramic views it provides. These views are often cited as being "worth the effort" of venturing beyond the Lower Tent Meadow area, suggesting a more open landscape with distant vistas that truly immerse you in nature. The campsite area is situated next to a stream, which serves as a crucial natural feature. This stream was reported to be running reliably in late September 2016, providing a potential water source. However, it comes with a significant caveat: a ranger's warning that the stream "does dry up late in some years." This means campers must be prepared for variable water conditions and bring their own supply or have reliable water purification methods ready, especially during drier periods or later in the season.

Given its nature as a primitive backcountry campsite, the services and features at Upper Tent Meadow are minimal, focusing on providing a natural, unadulterated camping experience. There are no developed facilities such as restrooms, potable water spigots, picnic tables, fire rings, or designated parking spaces directly at the campsite area. This is dispersed camping, meaning campers are expected to adhere to Leave No Trace principles, packing out everything they pack in, including all trash and human waste. The "side trails" mentioned suggest that finding an established, previously used campsite within the general area might require a bit of exploration once you've reached the general vicinity. The lack of clear markers for the exact "campsite area" further underscores the primitive nature, requiring campers to have good navigational skills and a readiness to scout for suitable spots that minimize impact on the environment. The presence of a stream, even if potentially seasonal, is the primary natural "service" available, offering a water source for filtration and cooling.

The main features of Upper Tent Meadow campsite are its wilderness characteristics and the rewarding views it provides. It caters specifically to tent camping and does not accommodate RVs or trailers due to the lack of developed roads and the remote nature of the location. The appeal lies in its remoteness and the opportunity for solitude, away from the crowds often found in more developed campgrounds. The mention of "several side trails" suggests opportunities for further exploration and hiking directly from the campsite, allowing campers to fully immerse themselves in the surrounding natural landscape. The "effort going past the Lower Tent Meadows site" indicates that reaching Upper Tent Meadow involves a hike, making it suitable for backpackers and those prepared for a trek. The fact that a camper "ended up in an OK campsite that was clearly used by others" implies that while not formally marked, there are established primitive sites that experienced campers can identify and utilize.

From a promotional standpoint, Upper Tent Meadow campsite would be presented as an ideal destination for the adventurous, self-reliant camper looking for a true wilderness escape within the "Camping Near Me" category. It's pitched as a reward for those willing to put in the effort, promising "views... worth the effort" and a deep connection with nature. The emphasis would be on its primitive character, attracting individuals who prioritize solitude, natural beauty, and a challenge over comfort and amenities. It would appeal to backpackers, experienced hikers, and anyone seeking a digital detox, as cell service and other modern conveniences are highly unlikely in such a remote setting. Key promotional messages would include the stunning vistas, the presence of a natural stream (with the caveat about its potential to dry up), and the opportunity for an authentic backcountry experience. This campsite is not for the novice camper but for those with experience in wilderness survival, navigation, and Leave No Trace ethics.

It's important for prospective campers to be fully prepared for this type of camping. This includes carrying all necessary supplies, such as sufficient water, food, first-aid, navigation tools, and appropriate gear for varying weather conditions. Understanding and practicing Leave No Trace principles is paramount to preserving the pristine environment of Upper Tent Meadow. The information available suggests that this site offers a profound sense of natural escape, a chance to truly disconnect and appreciate the raw beauty of the wilderness, making it a compelling option for those whose camping aspirations extend beyond typical developed campgrounds.
