Waterways Campground Introduce
For local users exploring the "camping near me" category in Northern Michigan, Waterways Campground, located at 9575 M-33, Cheboygan, MI 49721, offers a potentially tranquil camping experience with a strong emphasis on river-based activities. With contact phone numbers (231) 627-7066 and +1 231-627-7066, this campground appears to be particularly appealing to those interested in fishing, boating, and kayaking on the Inland Waterway. While some aspects, such as the predominantly seasonal camper demographic and potential road noise, should be considered, the positive feedback regarding the owners and the fishing opportunities suggests a campground with distinct advantages.
The environment of Waterways Campground is clearly defined by its proximity to a significant waterway, part of the Inland Waterway system in Michigan. This location offers direct access to river fishing, as highlighted by a reviewer who described it as "outstanding," successfully catching walleye and perch. The presence of "docks" further supports the accessibility of the river for fishing and potentially for launching small watercraft like kayaks. The overall atmosphere is described as "quiet," which can be a major draw for those seeking a peaceful retreat in nature. However, one reviewer notes that the river can become "unfishable on the weekends due to pontoon boats," indicating potentially heavy recreational traffic during peak times. This suggests that while the weekday environment might be serene and ideal for fishing, weekends could be busier with boating activity. The surrounding area of Cheboygan is known for its natural beauty, including lakes, rivers, and forests, making Waterways Campground a potentially well-situated base for exploring the region.
In terms of services and facilities, the available reviews provide some insight. One camper specifically mentions that "the bathrooms were always clean," which is a significant positive aspect for any campground. Clean and well-maintained facilities contribute greatly to the comfort and overall satisfaction of visitors. The mention of a grandson fishing off the docks implies that the campground provides infrastructure to facilitate river access for fishing. Additionally, the friendly interaction with the owner, Mark, who allowed the grandson to fish and pet his dog, suggests a welcoming and accommodating management style. While details about other potential services like laundry facilities, fire pits, or picnic tables are not explicitly mentioned, the focus on clean bathrooms and river access indicates attention to basic camper needs. It's worth noting that the campground has "mostly seasonal campers," which might influence the overall atmosphere for short-term visitors.
The features of Waterways Campground seem to revolve primarily around its access to the Inland Waterway and the quiet environment during the weekdays. The outstanding river fishing is a significant feature for anglers. The presence of docks enhances this feature, providing a convenient platform for fishing and potentially for launching kayaks or other small boats. The quiet atmosphere, particularly during the week, appeals to those seeking a peaceful camping experience. However, the weekend river traffic with pontoon boats could be considered both a feature (for boaters) and a potential drawback (for anglers seeking solitude). The pet-friendly aspect, indicated by the interaction with the owner's dog, might be another feature that attracts certain campers. The seasonal camper demographic is also a notable feature, potentially creating a more established community within the park, though one reviewer noted that some seasonal campers were "not very welcoming" to transient visitors, which is a point for consideration.
From a promotional perspective, Waterways Campground can highlight its key strengths: outstanding river fishing, a quiet weekday environment, clean bathrooms, and friendly owners. The location on the Inland Waterway provides a natural draw for those interested in boating and kayaking, although the weekend congestion should be mentioned to set realistic expectations. For local users searching for "camping near me" who prioritize fishing and a peaceful setting (especially during the week), Waterways Campground could be an excellent choice. The pet-friendly aspect can also be a promotional point for those traveling with animals. The owners, described as "fabulous" and "welcoming," are another significant asset that can be emphasized in promotional materials. Potential drawbacks, such as the road noise mentioned for early mornings and the unwelcoming attitude reported by one reviewer from some seasonal campers, should ideally be addressed by the management to improve the overall guest experience.
The fact that one reviewer plans to make Waterways Campground a "yearly visit" for their crew speaks volumes about the positive aspects of their experience, particularly the fishing and the overall enjoyment despite the noted drawbacks. This kind of repeat business and positive sentiment can be a powerful promotional tool. Highlighting the opportunities for fishing (walleye and perch specifically mentioned), boating, and kayaking on the Inland Waterway, coupled with the quiet weekday atmosphere and clean facilities, should be central to the campground's appeal to local users searching for "camping near me."
In summary, Waterways Campground in Cheboygan, MI, offers a unique camping experience centered around the Inland Waterway. Its environment provides excellent river fishing and opportunities for boating and kayaking. The campground is generally quiet, especially during the week, and the bathrooms are consistently clean. The owners are described as fabulous and welcoming. However, potential drawbacks include road noise in the early mornings and a report of some seasonal campers being unwelcoming. The river can also be busy with boat traffic on weekends, potentially impacting fishing. Despite these considerations, the strong positive feedback regarding the fishing and the owners suggests that Waterways Campground is a worthwhile option for local users seeking a "camping near me" destination with a focus on river activities and a generally peaceful setting.
For local users utilizing the "camping near me" platform, Waterways Campground presents itself as a destination with a strong emphasis on water-based recreation and a quiet (weekday) atmosphere. The clean facilities and friendly owners are significant positives. However, users should be aware of the potential for road noise and the reported unwelcoming behavior from some seasonal campers. The weekend river congestion might also be a deterrent for those primarily interested in fishing during that time. Providing a balanced view that highlights both the strengths (fishing, quiet weekdays, clean facilities, friendly owners) and the weaknesses (road noise, potentially unwelcoming seasonals, weekend river traffic) will help users make an informed decision.
To further enhance the listing for Waterways Campground, including information about the types of campsites available (e.g., tent, RV), any additional amenities offered (e.g., fire pits, picnic tables, laundry), and perhaps some photos of the campground and the river access would be beneficial. Addressing the reported issues of road noise and seasonal camper interactions could also improve the overall guest experience and the campground's reputation. Overall, for local users seeking "camping near me" with excellent river fishing and a generally quiet ambiance, Waterways Campground in Cheboygan, MI, is a strong contender, provided they are aware of the potential drawbacks.

Waterways Campground Reviews
My grandson and I stayed for a few days here while we explored the surrounding areas. We had no problems at all!!The bathrooms were always clean, my grandson fished off the docks and pet Mark's dog when he could. We had a great time and enjoyed the quiet! Thanks Mark for letting Harley fish and visit
Sep 05, 2024 · Nancie NewmanQuiet park with mostly seasonal campers. The seasonals weren't very welcoming to us. Owners are fabulous. Road noise is an issue early am.The fishing in the river is outstanding. Most just boat and kayak the river. We caught all the walleyes and Perch we wanted. River is unfishable on the weekends due to pontoon boats, during the week we had it to ourselves.Definitely a yearly visit for my crew.
Sep 02, 2024 · Pat AlberGreat campground on the river. Clean restrooms, well spaced lots, close to great bike/walking trails and convenient to the many thing to do and see in the area. Also, there is a great restaurant over looking the river across the road if you don't feel like cooking.
Jul 09, 2024 · Jim HinkleDespite being on a state highway the place is really quiet and peaceful. This campground is no frills, but everything it does have is done right. Sites are a bit on the narrow side, but are level and clean with fire pits and sturdy picnic tables.Mark, the owner, is super nice and goes above and beyond to make our stay comfortable, as do the camp hosts. Everyone is so friendly! Our only real complaint is the low water pressure but even that isn't a big issue, as there is enough pressure for a decent shower. All in all, we're loving it here!
