Windmill Ridge Campground

2114 140th St, Kalona, IA 52247, USA

4.0
Small and quiet campground with a small playground and a fishing pond. Adequate electrical hookups but no water at the sites so stop and fill before you set up. Picnic tables and fire rings not available at each site. You'd need to share with your neighbors. Difficult layout in parts of the campground with campers needing to park behind each other which caused a great deal of confusion about where to set up. Maybe a map posted at the office would be helpful. Our neighbors were subject to some harsh words from someone who wanted them to move their camper to allow access. Self pay in cash at the office with envelopes and a drop slot. We never did see anyone who seemed to be the owners or staff. Restrooms and showers dated but adequate. Dump station on site but the exit path requires an uphill pull on grass which might be tricky in wet weather. - Patricia Cottrell

Windmill Ridge Campground Introduce

Looking for a tranquil camping spot in your local area? Windmill Ridge Campground, located at 2114 140th St, Kalona, IA 52247, USA, offers a small and quiet retreat for those seeking a peaceful outdoor experience. For local users searching under the category "camping near me," Windmill Ridge Campground provides a more basic camping experience with some appealing natural features. You can reach them at (319) 656-4488 or via mobile at +1 319-656-4488 for inquiries.

Embrace a Small and Quiet Environment:

Windmill Ridge Campground is described by visitors as small and quiet, particularly during the week. This makes it an attractive option for those seeking a more secluded and relaxing camping experience away from larger, more bustling campgrounds. The presence of "tons of shade" is a significant advantage, especially during warmer months, providing a comfortable and cool environment for campers to enjoy the outdoors. While not explicitly detailed, the shade suggests mature trees throughout the campground, contributing to a pleasant natural setting.

Basic Services and Considerations:

It's important for potential visitors to be aware of the services available at Windmill Ridge Campground, as they are somewhat limited based on customer reviews:

  • Electrical Hookups: Adequate electrical hookups are available at the sites, which is a plus for those needing power for their campers or devices.
  • No Water at Sites: A key consideration is the lack of water hookups at most campsites. Campers are advised to stop and fill their water tanks before setting up. Only three spots reportedly have water hookups.
  • Shared Amenities: Picnic tables and fire rings are not available at each individual site, meaning campers may need to share these amenities with their neighbors. This could impact the convenience and privacy of individual campsites.
  • Restrooms and Showers: The restrooms and showers are described as "dated but adequate." While they provide essential facilities, campers should not expect modern or recently renovated amenities.
  • Dump Station: A dump station is available on-site for the convenience of RV campers. However, the exit path from the dump station is noted to require an uphill pull on grass, which could be challenging in wet weather conditions.
  • Self-Pay System: The campground operates on a self-pay system using cash, envelopes, and a drop slot at the office. This suggests that there may not be staff readily available on-site for check-in or assistance. One reviewer mentioned never seeing owners or staff.

Features and Recreational Opportunities:

Despite its smaller size and basic services, Windmill Ridge Campground offers a few features that may appeal to certain campers:

  • Small Playground: Families with young children will appreciate the small playground, providing a space for kids to play.
  • Fishing Pond: The presence of a fishing pond offers a recreational activity for those who enjoy fishing. The size and types of fish available are not mentioned.
  • Nice Trail: One reviewer noted the presence of a "nice trail," suggesting opportunities for walking and exploring the immediate surroundings. The length and difficulty of the trail are not specified.

Potential Challenges and Important Notes:

Several points raised in the customer reviews are important for prospective campers to consider:

  • Difficult Layout: Parts of the campground have a layout where campers may need to park behind each other, leading to confusion about setup. A map at the office was suggested as a helpful addition to alleviate this issue.
  • Potential for Neighborly Conflicts: One review mentioned a negative interaction between neighbors regarding camper placement and access. This highlights the importance of clear site boundaries and potentially better campground layout or guidance.
  • Limited Water Hookups: The scarcity of water hookups at individual sites is a significant limitation for campers who prefer or require on-site water access.
  • Uphill Exit from Dump Station: The grassy, uphill exit from the dump station could pose a challenge for some RVs, particularly in wet conditions.
  • Lack of On-Site Staff: The self-pay system and the reviewer's experience of not seeing staff might mean limited assistance is available on-site.

Promotional Information and Local Appeal:

For local users searching for "camping near me" who prioritize a quiet, shady environment and don't require extensive amenities, Windmill Ridge Campground could be a suitable option, especially given its reported low price of $20 per day (though this was mentioned in the context of limited water hookups). The small playground and fishing pond add some recreational value, particularly for families with young children or those who enjoy fishing.

Consider Windmill Ridge Campground if you are looking for:

  • A Quiet and Peaceful Camping Experience: Ideal for those seeking a low-key getaway.
  • Ample Shade: A significant benefit during hot Iowa summers.
  • Basic Amenities at a Potentially Lower Cost: If you are comfortable with limited services and a self-pay system.
  • A Small Playground and Fishing Pond: Added features for families and anglers.
  • A Nearby Trail for Walking: For a bit of light outdoor activity.

However, be prepared for the limitations, including the lack of water at most sites, the potential need to share picnic tables and fire rings, the dated restrooms and showers, and the self-service nature of the campground. The challenging layout in some areas and the potential for parking conflicts are also factors to keep in mind. Contact Windmill Ridge Campground at (319) 656-4488 to inquire about site availability and any specific concerns you may have before planning your visit. While it may not offer all the bells and whistles of larger campgrounds, Windmill Ridge Campground provides a basic and potentially budget-friendly option for a quiet camping experience in the Kalona area.
