Wolf Lair Campground

19091 County Park Rd, Abingdon, VA 24211, USA

4.0
Avoid this campground. They have extremely poor maintenance, and the grass and weeds overtake the place and makes it look junky. There is no playground. The store is not open during the week (so no ice, no drinks). The 3 pigs grill is good and staffed by friendly people but you can't count on when it will be open and it's only scheduled to be open on Saturday and Sundays during the summer which is not enough. The pool drops from 3 feet to 12 ft very quickly so not terribly kid friendly. The management is never around and they have been rude when reporting issues. The campers are very cramped together like you're right up to the next camper and there is no grass or trees or picnic tables or parking. You might get a good view of Holston Lake depending on your spot. - Jennifer Click

Wolf Lair Campground Introduce

If you are searching for "camping near me" in the Abingdon, Virginia area, Wolf Lair Campground, located at 19091 County Park Rd, Abingdon, VA 24211, USA, is a potential option. You can contact them at (276) 739-8004 or +1 276-739-8004. Based on recent customer reviews, experiences at this campground appear to be somewhat mixed, with both positive and negative aspects highlighted.

Environment and Location:

One reviewer described Wolf Lair Campground as "lovely" and "nestled on a hill with a surprising amount of room," offering a "spectacular view of South Holston Lake." Depending on your campsite, you might indeed enjoy a good view of the lake. The campground is also conveniently located about a one-mile walk from Washington County Park, which provides access to a nature trail, a beach, and a boat launch. Walking around the park has been mentioned as free, with a small entry fee for vehicles, especially those with boats.

In contrast, another reviewer expressed significant concerns about the campground's maintenance, stating that "the grass and weeds overtake the place and makes it look junky." This paints a different picture of the environment, suggesting that upkeep might be inconsistent. The same review also noted a lack of trees and grass at the campsites themselves.

Services and Amenities:

One positive aspect mentioned is the availability of "clean amenities." However, the specifics of these amenities are not detailed. The negative review points out several shortcomings: the absence of a playground, a store that is reportedly not open during the week (limiting access to ice and drinks), and a pool that drops steeply from 3 feet to 12 feet, potentially making it less kid-friendly.

There is a food option called "The 3 pigs grill," which is praised for its good food and friendly staff. However, its operating hours seem limited, reportedly only scheduled for Saturdays and Sundays during the summer, which one reviewer felt was insufficient. The management is described by one dissatisfied guest as "never around" and "rude when reporting issues."

For those seeking alternative camping experiences, one reviewer had a positive "glamping" experience in the "Butterfly Bell tent," which was situated on a deck and equipped with a bed, linens, towels, nightstand, lamp, fan, and books, as well as a table and chairs with lights on the deck.

Campsite Features:

The negative review indicates that the campsites are "very cramped together," giving a sense of being right next to neighboring campers. It also mentions a lack of grass, trees, picnic tables, and dedicated parking at the campsites. This contrasts with the positive glamping experience, suggesting that the standard campsites might lack some desired features.

Proximity to Attractions:

A significant advantage highlighted is the campground's proximity to Washington County Park and the South Holston Lake. The park offers recreational opportunities like nature trails, a beach, and a boat launch, all within a walkable distance. Additionally, Bristol, VA/TN, with its restaurants and downtown area, is just a 20-minute drive away, providing access to more amenities and entertainment.

Promotional Considerations:

For those looking for "camping near me" with potential lake views and access to South Holston Lake and Washington County Park, Wolf Lair Campground's location is a definite plus. The availability of a unique glamping option in a bell tent might also appeal to those seeking a more comfortable and stylish outdoor experience. The proximity to Bristol, VA/TN, adds convenience for dining and exploring local culture.

However, potential campers should be aware of the concerns raised about maintenance, the lack of a playground, limited store hours, the pool's depth profile, and the reported cramped nature and lack of amenities at the standard campsites. The positive feedback regarding the glamping experience and the lake views suggests that the quality of experience might vary significantly depending on the type of accommodation chosen and the specific campsite.

In Conclusion:

Wolf Lair Campground near Abingdon, VA, offers a location with potential for lovely views of South Holston Lake and convenient access to Washington County Park. It also features a unique glamping option. However, some guests have reported issues with poor maintenance, cramped campsites lacking basic amenities like picnic tables and parking, limited store and grill hours, and a less kid-friendly pool. The management has also received negative feedback regarding their responsiveness and demeanor.

If you are primarily interested in the lake access and proximity to the county park, or if the glamping option appeals to you, Wolf Lair Campground might be worth considering. However, if well-maintained grounds, spacious campsites with amenities, and a playground are important to you, you might want to weigh these factors against the reported shortcomings. It would be advisable to perhaps inquire about the current condition of the campground and the specific amenities offered at the campsite you are considering before making a reservation. For those searching for "camping near me," it's essential to balance the positive aspects of location and unique accommodations with the reported maintenance and amenity issues to make an informed decision.
