Wright Patterson Scout Camp Introduce
For local users in the Dayton, Ohio area seeking "camping near me" that can accommodate large groups and offers a distinctive experience, Wright Patterson Scout Camp, located in Dayton, OH 45424, USA, presents an intriguing option. While primarily known for its association with scouting organizations, the positive reviews suggest that it can also cater to other large groups looking for a spacious and functional camping environment. The unique aspect of this campground is its proximity to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, offering the unusual and exciting feature of watching planes take off directly from the campsite.
The environment of Wright Patterson Scout Camp, based on the customer reviews, appears to be characterized by open, grassy areas suitable for setting up multiple tents and accommodating large groups. One reviewer noted "plenty of room for our group of 22 to set up camp as well as have a game of kickball," indicating a significant amount of open space. Another review confirmed it was "big enough for a troop of 50 kids and adults." This suggests a spacious layout capable of handling sizable gatherings. A notable environmental factor, however, is the mention of grass that "clearly has not been mowed in 2023" by one reviewer, and another echoed that "the grass wasn't cut recently." This indicates a potential issue with grounds maintenance during at least part of the 2023 season, which prospective campers should be aware of. Despite this, the overall impression is of a large, open area suitable for group activities.
In terms of services and facilities, the reviews provide some insight into what Wright Patterson Scout Camp offers:
- Ample space for camping, as highlighted by the ability to accommodate groups of 22 and 50 with room to spare for activities.
- Clean porta-potties were noted by one reviewer, suggesting that restroom facilities are available, although they are portable units.
- Nice fire rings are also mentioned, indicating designated areas for campfires, which are often a central feature of group camping experiences.
- Water was reported as "available nearby," which is a crucial service for any camping group. The exact location and accessibility of water sources within the campground are not specified.
- Good ground for setting tents on was mentioned, implying that the terrain is suitable for pitching tents comfortably and securely.
- Accessibility is described as "not too difficult," suggesting that the campground is reasonably easy to reach for vehicles and campers with their gear.
It's important to note the absence of information regarding other typical campground amenities such as permanent restroom buildings with showers, RV hookups (electric, water, sewer), picnic tables at individual campsites, or dedicated parking areas. Given its designation as a "Scout Camp," the facilities might be more basic and geared towards group tent camping rather than individual RV sites. Local users with specific needs should inquire further about the availability of these amenities.
The unique features of Wright Patterson Scout Camp make it stand out as a "camping near me" option, particularly for groups:
- The sheer size and capacity to comfortably accommodate large groups, making it ideal for scout troops, family reunions, or other large gatherings.
- The novelty of watching planes take off from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. This offers a distinctive and potentially exciting backdrop to the camping experience, especially for those interested in aviation.
- The presence of a nice fire ring encourages communal gatherings and traditional campfire activities.
- The availability of nearby water sources is a significant convenience for larger groups with various hydration and cooking needs.
- The ease of access makes it a practical choice for groups with a potentially large amount of gear and multiple vehicles.
However, the recurring issue of unmowed grass, as reported in the 2023 reviews, is a significant factor that local users should consider. While it didn't detract entirely from the positive aspects for the reviewers, it does suggest a potential lapse in regular maintenance that could affect the overall comfort and aesthetics of the campground. Prospective campers might want to inquire about the current status of groundskeeping to ensure a more pleasant environment.
Currently, no specific promotional information is available for Wright Patterson Scout Camp. As it appears to be primarily geared towards group bookings, any potential discounts or special rates might depend on the size of the group, the duration of the stay, or the time of year. Local users interested in booking the campground should likely contact the managing organization directly to inquire about availability, pricing, and any applicable fees. Given its name, the camp is likely managed by a local scouting organization (e.g., Boy Scouts of America), and inquiries should be directed to the relevant council or contact person. Information on booking procedures and potential discounts for non-scout groups might be available through their official channels.
In conclusion, Wright Patterson Scout Camp near Dayton, Ohio, offers a unique "camping near me" experience, particularly for large groups seeking ample space and the unusual attraction of watching planes take off. The positive reviews highlight its spaciousness, the presence of fire rings, nearby water, and ease of access. However, the recurring concern about unmowed grass in 2023 is a point that potential campers should be aware of and perhaps inquire about. For local users planning a group camping trip, Wright Patterson Scout Camp provides a distinctive setting and the capacity to accommodate large numbers. To obtain detailed information about booking procedures, fees, available amenities, and the current condition of the grounds, direct contact with the managing scouting organization is recommended.

Wright Patterson Scout Camp Reviews
Great unique place to camp. Gave it 4 stars due to the grass that clearly has not been mowed in 2023. Clean porta potty’s, nice fire ring and plenty of room for our group of 22 the set up camp as well as have a game of kickball. Everyone loved seeing the planes take off from our campsite.
Jul 23, 2023 · Angela ForkapaHad water available nearby, was big enough for a troop of 50 kids and adults, with good ground for setting tents on, and was not too difficult to access. Only problem is the grass wasn't cut recently.
Jun 17, 2018 · Luke AThere are a lot of people who will not be able to camp here because it is an active military base, but if you are a Scout Troop, it is worth making the effort to camp here and to attend the Air Force Museum. 3rd time here and always a treat. The only downside is that you cannot fax in your clearance information, it had to go via email, so I do worry about identity theft.
Jun 09, 2019 · Dan BoughtonUnique camping experience for our Troop: on the AFB grounds, where the campsite is wholly wooded and quiet (except for rare flights on the weekend we were there). The boys had a good time as usual, and one favorite feature of all was the base dining hall, where a full meal could be had for well below $5 for the Scouts.
Sep 05, 2018 · Trevor CopelandPrimitive site close to the Wright Memorial trail, USAF Museum and other historic sites. Pre planning is a must, and troops must register at least 30 days in advance. The camp site is about a 15 minute drive from the gate,,and no services are available on base unless you have military personnel or retirees with valid ID.
