Yellowstone Park / West Gate KOA Holiday Introduce
Looking for "camping near me" with convenient access to the wonders of Yellowstone National Park? Consider Yellowstone Park / West Gate KOA Holiday, situated just 6 miles west of West Yellowstone, Montana, at 3305 Targhee Pass Highway (US-20), West Yellowstone, MT 59758, USA. This KOA Holiday campground serves as a prime basecamp for exploring America's first national park and the surrounding natural beauty of Montana.
The location of Yellowstone Park / West Gate KOA Holiday offers a significant advantage for visitors eager to experience Yellowstone's iconic geysers, hot springs, wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes. Being just a short drive from the West Entrance, campers can easily access popular attractions like Old Faithful, the Grand Prismatic Spring, and the Yellowstone Lake area. Beyond the park, West Yellowstone is a charming town offering amenities such as restaurants, shops, and visitor centers, providing a convenient gateway experience.
Based on customer reviews, Yellowstone Park / West Gate KOA Holiday presents itself as an overall pleasant campground with friendly and helpful staff. The cleanliness of the facilities is also noted as a positive aspect. The proximity to the town of West Yellowstone and gas stations is highlighted as a convenience for travelers, making it easy to resupply and access local services.
The campground offers a range of amenities and services typical of a KOA Holiday location, although specific details on all offerings are not available in the provided information. Generally, KOA Holiday campgrounds cater to a variety of camping preferences, potentially including:
- RV sites with various hookup options (water, electricity, sewer).
- Tent sites for a more traditional camping experience.
- Cabin rentals for those seeking a more comfortable lodging option.
- Restroom and shower facilities.
- Laundry facilities for guests' convenience.
- Potentially, a camp store for basic necessities and souvenirs.
One reviewer specifically mentioned the presence of "enough shower facilities" and "a simple area for doing dishes," indicating that these essential amenities are available for campers. The well-maintained playground is also a significant feature, making this campground appealing to families with children, providing a safe and fun space for kids to play and burn off energy.
However, the reviews also bring attention to areas where improvements could enhance the guest experience. One significant concern raised is the lack of adequate lighting throughout the campground, particularly in the back areas. This lack of lighting created a "pitch blackness" at night, making it difficult to navigate when walking pets or moving around after dark. This is a safety and convenience issue that potential guests should be aware of.
Another suggestion from a guest is the addition of more regular and secured trash cans around the property. This would improve waste management and potentially contribute to the overall cleanliness and aesthetic appeal of the campground.
Furthermore, a reviewer mentioned a specific request regarding noise levels in the early morning, asking the "outdoor breakfast guy" to lower the music. This suggests that food services might be available on-site, but also highlights a potential issue with noise that could impact the tranquility of the camping experience for some guests.
A more critical concern raised by a reviewer is the water quality of the swimming pool, which was described as "quite dirty." This is a significant drawback, especially for families hoping to enjoy this recreational amenity. The reviewer strongly suggests improvements in pool maintenance to ensure a clean and enjoyable experience for all guests. While the staff is acknowledged for their hard work, addressing the pool cleanliness is crucial for overall guest satisfaction.
Despite these areas for potential improvement, the overall sentiment from the reviews suggests that Yellowstone Park / West Gate KOA Holiday is a "generally good" and "very nice" campground, with friendly staff and a convenient location. The reviewer who noted the lack of lighting still stated they would ask for specific spots (101-108 or 144-148), indicating that they found other aspects of their stay positive. The proximity to town and gas is a definite plus for travelers.
For those considering a stay at Yellowstone Park / West Gate KOA Holiday, it is advisable to:
- Contact the campground directly at (406) 646-7606 or +1 406-646-7606 to inquire about site availability, specific amenities (including RV hookups, tent site features, and cabin options), and current rates.
- Ask about the campground's lighting situation and whether any improvements have been made.
- Inquire about the status and maintenance of the swimming pool if this amenity is important to you.
- Clarify if there are designated trash disposal areas and their locations.
- If you are sensitive to noise in the morning, inquire about any on-site food services and potential noise levels.
- When booking, you might consider requesting sites in the front area (like the reviewer's spot 109) or the specifically recommended spots (101-108 or 144-148), although availability may vary.
In conclusion, Yellowstone Park / West Gate KOA Holiday offers a conveniently located camping option for those looking to explore Yellowstone National Park and the West Yellowstone area. While guests have generally reported positive experiences with friendly staff and clean facilities, potential visitors should be aware of reported issues such as inadequate lighting in some areas and concerns about the swimming pool's water quality. By contacting the campground directly and considering the recent feedback, travelers can make an informed decision and prepare for their "camping near me" adventure at Yellowstone.

Yellowstone Park / West Gate KOA Holiday Reviews
Overall very nice campground. Friendly staff. Clean. Proximity to town & gas good. Really needs more lighting. Took dog for walk in back of park: pitch blackness at night..can’t see AT ALL! (We were in trailer at 109 at front..nice spot.) I’d ask for spot 101-108 or 144-148! Would be nice to put just a few, regular, secured trash cans around the property. (Also, ask outdoor breakfast guy to lower the music early in the morning, please.)
Sep 19, 2024 · Dee MurphyIt wasn’t too far from Yellowstone, and the facilities were generally good. There were enough shower facilities, and there was a simple area for doing dishes. The playground was well-maintained, so it was great for kids to run around and play. However, the swimming pool needs better water quality management, as it was quite dirty. I would strongly suggest that they improve the pool maintenance. The staff seemed to work hard, and overall, it was a decent place to stay.
Oct 17, 2024 · JK KimWe brought our trailer and stayed there. The patio was really neat, it was cement, so not a lot of dirt and mud tracked into the trailer. The fire pit was clean when we got there. The store was pretty cool and had everything we needed and at a decent price, too. We did the mining dirt with the kids and got some cool gemstones. The location was ideal and right next to town, and the entrance to Yellowstone. Overall, it was a wonderful stay. We will definitely be going there again.
Aug 23, 2024 · Chris JacobsCheck in was very easy and smooth. Greeter was friendly and provided good, reliable recommendations for dinner. Escorter took us to our sight. Restrooms were clean and well lit. Our sight was not as level as we would have liked. Perhaps occasional grading? Also, our sight did not have an evening night light. Very quiet… we liked the dual purpose grill and campfire enclosure. That would be helpful for setting up after dark. Overall, a pleasant experience.
Sep 24, 2024 · Chris BearssThis was an excellent location to get to Yellowstone. The campsite was great and all of the staff were extremely nice. The store, laundry, restrooms, and coffee/ice cream shack were all nice and clean. Definitely a place for families with plenty to do. Not the place for you if you want tranquility. We were awakened early every morning and kept up late with all the hustle and bustle as our campsite was very close to the main building.
