Sun Retreats Gwynn's Island Introduce
Sun Retreats Gwynn's Island, located at 551 Buckschase Rd, Gwynn, VA 23066, USA, is a prominent and well-regarded destination within the "RV Parks Near Me" and "Camping Near Me" categories, offering a comprehensive experience for both short-term vacationers and those seeking extended seasonal stays. This resort-style campground is situated on the historic Gwynn's Island, providing a unique blend of natural beauty and a wide array of amenities. An objective introduction requires a detailed look at its environment, diverse services, numerous features, and how it is promoted to local and visiting users, drawing from extensive online information and resident feedback.
The environment of Sun Retreats Gwynn's Island is a major highlight, perfectly positioned on the tip of historic Gwynn's Island on the Chesapeake Bay. This grants visitors access to both "oceanfront and wooded campsites," offering a choice of settings to suit various preferences. The campground boasts "beach access," which, while described as "small," offers a "serene stretch of sand with panoramic views of the Chesapeake Bay," creating a tranquil spot for relaxation and watching stunning sunsets. The natural beauty of the island is further emphasized by the opportunity to "hike nearby nature and birding trails." The overall atmosphere is designed for "blissful relaxation," promising a peaceful and scenic escape from daily life. The reviews also highlight a strong sense of community and support, especially during challenging weather events like tropical storms, indicating a resilient and caring environment where staff actively look out for campers' well-being. This suggests a well-maintained physical environment complemented by a supportive social atmosphere.
In terms of services, Sun Retreats Gwynn's Island offers a wide range of provisions designed to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay. For RVers, "full hook-up RV sites" are available, accommodating everything from pop-up campers to motorhomes, and featuring 30 or 50-amp service, picnic tables, and fire pits. There are also "Metered Water & Electric RV Sites" and "Non Metered Water & Electric RV Sites," providing flexibility for different needs. Water is included in seasonal fees, and sewer service includes "1 Pump out per week." Wi-Fi access is also included in seasonal fees. For non-RVers, there are "Tent Camping" sites available, and historically, "1-bedroom cottages with kitchens" were offered, though a recent review indicates "They no longer rent any cottages out to keep 'riff raff' out," suggesting a shift in their rental policy. The campground provides essential facilities such as "Restroom & Shower Facilities," which are noted by a reviewer as being "clean," with pleasant cleaning staff. Additional services include a "dump station," "on-site storage (),"a"store()" for convenience, "ice (),"and"propane()." "Golf Cart Rentals ($)" are also available, making it easier to navigate the sprawling resort. "Manned security gate and roving patrol" within the broader Sun Retreats community further enhance the sense of security. The responsiveness of the staff is highly praised, with maintenance workers "John and Craig" going "above and beyond anyone's expectations" and office staff like "Kim" being "a pleasure to talk to" and always ready to help. However, one review indicates a negative experience with the office staff, suggesting an inconsistent "vibe" or specific policies regarding initial entry, where visitors are reprimanded for not stopping at the office first to "make sure to keep 'riff raff' out." This aspect of the service experience might be a point of consideration for potential guests.
The features of Sun Retreats Gwynn's Island are extensive and cater to a wide array of interests, making it a comprehensive vacation or long-term destination. Beyond the RV and tent sites, key recreational features include "Kayaking and Canoeing" directly from the beach, a "Fishing Pier" with new lights to attract fish, and "Corn Hole" boards on cement pads. For families, there is a "Playground" with modern equipment and a "Recreation Center" that is climate-controlled for indoor fun. The resort also boasts a "Community Fire Pit" for social gatherings, a "Covered Pavilion" for events, and a "Pet Area" with a "spacious, fenced-in dog park." Other listed amenities include "Basketball," "Volleyball," "Sports Field," and planned activities that fill a "social calendar." The presence of a "private marina" and "six-lane launch ramp" are significant features for boat owners. Beyond the immediate resort, the location on Gwynn's Island allows for exploration of local attractions like the "Gwynn's Island Museum" and the opportunity to experience the "local Art Gallery." The resort offers "Long-Term Stays" with seasonal fees, indicating its suitability for extended living, from April to November. The dedication of the staff, particularly in maintenance and customer service, is a standout feature, contributing significantly to a positive experience for many residents.
For promotional information within the "RV Parks Near Me" or "Camping Near Me" categories, Sun Retreats Gwynn's Island can be positioned as a vibrant, amenity-rich waterfront resort ideal for both short-term getaways and seasonal living. Promotional messaging should emphasize its prime location on Gwynn's Island with "oceanfront and wooded campsites" and direct "beach access" to the Chesapeake Bay. The extensive list of recreational features, including water sports, fishing, sports courts, and a playground, would appeal to families and active individuals. The "full hook-up" RV sites and availability of tent camping make it versatile for different camping styles. Testimonials highlighting the "amazing" new manager and responsive, hard-working staff, particularly "John and Craig" in maintenance and "Kim" in the office, can build trust and illustrate the positive community atmosphere. Phrases like "Experience unforgettable seasonal stays" or "Your ultimate Chesapeake Bay getaway" would be effective. However, it would be prudent to advise potential visitors to familiarize themselves with the park's entry and visitor policies, especially regarding checking in at the office upon arrival, to ensure a smooth experience. Despite the single negative office experience, the overall positive feedback on cleanliness, staff helpfulness, and community vibe suggests a strong appeal for those seeking a well-managed and activity-filled camping destination on Gwynn's Island.

Sun Retreats Gwynn's Island Reviews
This is the end of our first year here and we couldn't be more pleased. We recently had tropical storm Ophelia come through and we were concerned about our camper flooding. Living 1.5 hours away means it isnt always easy getting here. The new manager and current staff were amazing and very responsive when asking for help and looking out for us and other campers.Aside from that, I can't say enough about John and Craig who work maintenance. They work hard, rain or shine, sick or healthy, and go above and beyond anyone's expectations to make sure everyone is happy and comfortable. Kim, who works in the office is such a pleasure to talk to. She's always ready to greet campers and help them out, especially if you want info about Gwynn's Island. The campground is clean, the bath house is clean and the lady who cleans is always pleasant and smiling.I'm so glad to be a part of this community and look forward to another summer. Thank you for all you do!
Oct 07, 2023 · Jenny RobinsonRecently rode thru to have a looksie..then as we were leaving, stopped in the office for some info and whatever you do, stop in to the office before you ride through or the office lady will call you "riff raff". Yep, after 10 minute ride thru, I was reprimanded for not stopping first. They want to make sure to keep "riff raff" out. They no longer rent any cottages out to keep "riff raff"out. Not liking the office vibe.
Sep 04, 2024 · Gina BishopThis was our second trip here this year and absolutely loved our waterfront site, D01. We stayed first week of May and week of September 11th. Beautiful views and staff very friendly. Women's bath house was out of commission but allotted hours for use of men's side. We wanted to make this a yearly trip but sad to hear they may not be open to transients and going private as of next. Very disappointing as this was one of our favorite spots this year and were looking forward to coming back next year.
Sep 15, 2022 · Mikey HarvLove this place! The staff is wonderful, the campers are wonderful, and the resort is absolutely beautiful!Kudos to John, who has gone above and beyond on several occasions for us, when we have needed help or have been in a bind! Mike who runs the show, is so kind and helpful, and can be seen everywhere throughout the resort and always there when needed!
Nov 07, 2021 · Kristal JoynerWe ended up at Gwynn’s Island after a storm took out power at New Point (both are managed by they same people). Thanks to them, the transfer to a different campground was seamless. All of the staff are so kind and helpful. The resort is well maintained and very peaceful. The playground is in great condition and is situated near a beautiful view to enjoy while children play. They were having a mermaid/pirate party this weekend and our kids enjoyed facepainting, balloon animals and a magic show (all included in our stay!). Awesome fishing pier and beach! Definitely a place for all ages to enjoy. Thanks for a great weekend.
