While overwhelmingly praised for its setting, friendly staff, and cleanliness, potential visitors should be aware of a noted issue regarding generator noise, as highlighted in one of the customer reviews.
The Stunning Lakeside Environment of Ausable Point:
Ausable Point Campground is undeniably situated in a picturesque environment, directly bordering the scenic Lake Champlain. Its location is described as "one of the best" for those seeking waterfront camping. The widest expanse of Lake Champlain offers breathtaking views and ample opportunities for water-based activities. Campers can likely enjoy swimming, boating, kayaking, and fishing directly from the campground's shores. The allure of waking up to the sight and sounds of the lake is a significant draw. Furthermore, the campground's strategic location also provides convenient access to other regional attractions, including the renowned Ausable Chasm, a natural wonder just a short drive away, and even offers a viable and budget-friendly lodging option for those planning a trip to Montréal, making it a versatile base for exploration.
Services and Amenities: Friendly Staff and Well-Maintained Facilities:
Visitors to Ausable Point Campground consistently commend the staff for their friendly and helpful demeanor. They are described as "genuinely concerned about safety," which contributes to a pleasant and secure atmosphere for all campers. This focus on safety and guest well-being enhances the overall camping experience. Moreover, the campgrounds themselves are reported to be "well maintained and clean," indicating a commitment to providing a comfortable and hygienic environment for guests. Clean facilities are a crucial aspect of any campground, and Ausable Point seems to excel in this area, contributing to its reputation as a desirable place to stay.
Key Features: Waterfront Location, Water Sports, and Proximity to Attractions:
The standout feature of Ausable Point Campground is undoubtedly its prime location directly on Lake Champlain, offering unparalleled access to water sports and stunning lake views. This makes it an ideal destination for those who enjoy swimming, boating, kayaking, or simply relaxing by the water's edge. The campground's proximity to Ausable Chasm, a major natural attraction in the region, and its suitability as an affordable base for trips to Montréal further enhance its appeal, catering to a diverse range of interests and travel plans. The combination of a beautiful natural setting and convenient access to regional highlights makes Ausable Point a compelling choice for local users seeking a well-rounded camping experience.
The Issue of Generator Noise: A Potential Drawback:
While the majority of the feedback is positive, one reviewer raised a significant concern regarding generator noise. They reported being surrounded by generators running for "5 hours a day" around their campsite, which severely detracted from their experience, reducing their potential five-star rating to a one-star rating based on this issue. The reviewer expressed confusion as to why the park service has not implemented designated generator and non-generator loops, a common practice in many national and state parks in the US aimed at accommodating different camper preferences. This issue of prolonged generator use in close proximity to campsites could be a major deterrent for local users seeking a peaceful and quiet natural retreat. It is crucial for prospective visitors to inquire about the campground's policies on generator use and whether specific noise-free areas are available when making reservations.
Budget-Friendly Accommodation: An Attractive Aspect:
Ausable Point Campground is described as offering a "perfect and budget-friendly place to stay" for those visiting the area, whether to explore Ausable Chasm or as a stopover on a trip to Montréal. This affordability, combined with its prime location and clean facilities, makes it an attractive option for local users looking for value without compromising on a quality camping experience. The cost-effectiveness of staying at Ausable Point could be a significant factor for families or budget-conscious travelers seeking "camping near me" that provides access to both nature and nearby attractions.
Lack of Specific Promotional Information and the Importance of Inquiry:
The provided reviews do not mention any specific promotional offers, discounts for local residents, or seasonal rates for Ausable Point Campground. As a state-operated campground, pricing and availability might be subject to seasonal variations and standard state park fees. Local users interested in potential discounts or special deals should contact the campground directly using the provided phone numbers ((518) 561-7080 or +1 518-561-7080) or consult the official New York State Parks website for the most accurate and up-to-date information on pricing and any available promotions. Inquiring about potential quiet loops or generator-free areas when booking might also enhance the chances of a more peaceful stay.
Overall Recommendation with a Caveat:
Ausable Point Campground appears to be a highly desirable "camping near me" location for local users, primarily due to its stunning setting on Lake Champlain, the friendly and safety-conscious staff, and the well-maintained and clean facilities. Its strategic location also offers easy access to regional attractions like Ausable Chasm and provides a budget-friendly option for travelers heading to Montréal. However, the significant issue of potential generator noise, as highlighted by one reviewer, cannot be overlooked. Local users who prioritize a quiet camping environment should specifically inquire about generator policies and the availability of quieter camping loops when making their reservations. If this issue can be mitigated or avoided, Ausable Point Campground promises an exceptional lakeside camping experience.
In Conclusion:
Ausable Point Campground offers a compelling combination of a beautiful waterfront location on Lake Champlain, friendly and safety-focused staff, and clean, well-maintained facilities, making it a strong contender for "camping near me" in the Peru, NY area. Its proximity to Ausable Chasm and its affordability for those traveling to Montréal add to its appeal. However, local users should be aware of the potential for significant generator noise, as reported by a visitor, and are strongly advised to inquire about generator policies and the availability of quieter camping areas when booking. By addressing this potential concern, local campers can fully enjoy the many positive aspects of Ausable Point Campground for a memorable lakeside retreat.

Ausable Point Campground Reviews
It could be a five star for the nice location on lake Champlain but one star for each generator around our campsite 5 hours a day!!! I do not understand why the park service have not allowed the use a generators on a lest one loop. Most national and state parks on the Us have set generator loops and non generators loop. Please do the same at Ausable so it could be a five stat, not a noisy one.
Nov 30, 2024 · Stéphane GaudreaultAusable Point Campground is perhaps one of the best locations for camping, water sports, and viewing the beautiful and widest point of Lake Champlain. The staff are friendly and genuinely concerned about safety, ensuring a pleasant and secure stay. The campgrounds are well maintained and clean, offering a perfect and budget-friendly place to stay while visiting Ausable Chasm or on your trip to Montréal. Highly recommended for its great location and excellent facilities!
Aug 03, 2024 · Haroon SarwerDecent bathrooms, showers are good, beach is sandy and price is nice. Note the campground is basically on the river delta for the Ausable River, so there's a lot of standing water between sites---expect bugs, and lots of frog and other water creature noises, especially at night. Not sure about drainage during rains or after heavy rains upstream. But usually, a good waypoint for those peddling the Empire Trail or passing through.
Aug 02, 2024 · Perette BarellaBeautiful place to camp. Staff is friendly, It's very clean and well kept; only issue though is 9 times out of 10, there is no hot water in the showers. On occasion you’ll get a hot shower but it either has to be very late at night or you have to wait 30 minuets for it to warm up. Other than the showers, this place is a very great place to bring family.
Jun 23, 2024 · GavinLocation and nature around is magnificent. Beach ans services are well maintained. Down side is camping is not well maintained. Washrooms and water stations are most out of order. The camping needs investment into new proper installations
