Bay City Campground Introduce
Looking for a delightful "camping near me" experience with picturesque waterfront views? Consider Bay City Campground, situated at W6490 Lake Pepin Blvd, Bay City, WI 54723. Nestled on a beautiful peninsula offering stunning vistas of the Mississippi River (Lake Pepin), this campground provides a charming getaway with convenient amenities and a welcoming atmosphere for both tent and RV campers. Located just a short 15-minute drive from Red Wing, Minnesota, Bay City Campground offers a blend of natural beauty and easy access to nearby attractions and services.
The environment of Bay City Campground is a significant highlight, boasting beautiful views of the expansive Mississippi River, also known as Lake Pepin in this area. Imagine waking up to the sight of the glistening water and enjoying the tranquil atmosphere of the riverside. The campground's location on a peninsula ensures that many campsites benefit from these scenic views, providing a truly relaxing backdrop for your outdoor adventure. While the reviews mention that the campsites are positioned somewhat closely together, the undeniable beauty of the Mississippi River and the surrounding landscape compensates for the limited privacy for many visitors.
In terms of services and features, Bay City Campground offers essential amenities to ensure a comfortable stay. Notably, all campsites are equipped with full hookups, including water, sewer, and 30 Amp electric connections. This is a significant advantage for RV campers, providing all the necessary utilities for a seamless and convenient experience. Tent campers can also appreciate the availability of water hookups at each site. The campground is also proudly dog-friendly, allowing you to bring your furry companions along, provided they are kept on a leash at all times, ensuring the safety and comfort of all guests.
Recent upgrades include a new shower and bathhouse conveniently located near the swim beach. This modern facility offers clean and well-maintained restrooms for campers' use. However, it's worth noting that showers operate on a coin system, requiring four quarters ($1.00) for a 5-minute shower. Plan accordingly and bring some spare change if you intend to use the showers.
A significant feature that adds to the convenience and enjoyment of Bay City Campground is the presence of a picnic shelter situated next to the campsites. This shelter is equipped with electricity, a real bonus for campers who may need to charge devices or use small appliances. The shelter also provides ample tables, making it an ideal space for group meals, socializing, or seeking shade during sunny days. This communal area fosters a sense of community among campers.
The caretakers of Bay City Campground, Steve and Penny (and Bob, as mentioned in another review), consistently receive high praise for their friendliness and helpfulness. They are described as super nice, very helpful, and all-around great people who make guests feel right at home. Their willingness to assist and ensure campers have what they need contributes significantly to the positive and welcoming atmosphere of the campground. This personal touch can greatly enhance the overall camping experience.
While many reviewers express having a wonderful time at Bay City Campground, it's important to be aware of a few potential drawbacks mentioned in the feedback. Some campers noted that the campsites are quite close together, which may result in a lack of privacy. If you prioritize secluded and spacious campsites, this is something to consider. Additionally, the campground's proximity to a parking lot can lead to some noise, particularly at night. Furthermore, due to the location across the lake from Red Wing, the sound of trains can echo across the water, potentially disturbing light sleepers. Early morning activity from fishing and hunting boats leaving around 3 am was also mentioned as a potential source of noise for those camping in tents.
Regarding payment, Bay City Campground operates on a cash-only system. Campers are required to pay for their campsite using cash and deposit it in a designated dropbox. Therefore, it is essential to come prepared with the necessary amount in cash, as card payments are not accepted.
Despite these minor drawbacks, the overall sentiment towards Bay City Campground is positive, with many guests expressing their intention to return. The beautiful views of the Mississippi River, the convenience of full hookups at each site, the clean and new bathroom facilities, and the exceptional hospitality of the caretakers make it a compelling option for "camping near me." The proximity to Red Wing, MN, also offers opportunities to explore the attractions and amenities of a nearby town.
In conclusion, Bay City Campground offers a cute and convenient camping experience on the banks of the Mississippi River (Lake Pepin) near Red Wing, MN. With full hookups, a new bathhouse, a useful picnic shelter with electricity, and a pet-friendly policy, it caters to a variety of campers. The stunning waterfront views and the friendly service of the caretakers are significant draws. While the campsites may lack some privacy and noise from the parking lot and distant trains can be a factor, the overall value and location make Bay City Campground a worthwhile consideration for your next camping adventure. Remember to bring cash for payment and be prepared for a potentially social camping environment with beautiful riverside scenery.

Bay City Campground Reviews
Cute little campground!! 15 minutes from Red Wing, MN. All camp spots have water, sewer and 30 Amp electric. They are placed close together but not a problem and our neighbors were super nice! Dog friendly just have to have them on a leash at all times. There is a new shower/ bath house over by the swim beach. The caretakers Steve and Penny are super nice and very helpful and all around great people!!! Super easy to talk too and make you feel right at home!!!Had a wonderful time minus the rain showers on and off lol but if you are a true camper it wouldnt bother you at all and you make the best of it which we did!!! We would definitely come here again!!!
Jun 23, 2024 · Selina BarnesGreat place to stay. Beautiful views of the Mississippi. The campsites are a bit tight, lacking much privacy but located on a beautiful peninsula. The picnic shelter next to the campsites has electricity (a real bonus!) and lots of tables. The bathrooms are new and clean. If you want a shower is costs 4 quarters for 5 min.You have to pay for your campsite in cash in a Dropbox - bring cash along!A bit noisy at night, the campsites are located near a parking lot. Noise also echos across the lake so you can hear the trains in red wing during the night. Also many fishing/hunting boats would leave around 3am near our tents.Bob is very friendly and helpful and will check in to make sure you have what you need! Would definitely recommend Bay City campground!
Sep 20, 2020 · Caroline WalkerNice place. Great beach. Nice bathrooms. Caretaker Bob was great! Tent area is cool. But sites are close together and it's a narrow spot so you litteraly have to walk through people's campsite to walk to bathroom. But not a huge deal.
Oct 04, 2022 · charles wayneI really liked this place. It's right on the Bay, has a boat launch and beach access. It's very low tech - cash only in a drop box. It's also pretty affordable with pricing close to State Park pricing. The camp host is super friendly and very helpful. There's definitely a feel of community, people living here seasonally or full time. There's a little swing set on site and a bigger playground down the road. It's a little loosey goosey with leash rules, which I liked, because it meant my dog could play in the water, but some people may not like that. Full hook ups was nice too. It's only 20 minutes from Red Wing if you want to do any shopping or if you forget anything.
Aug 16, 2020 · Christina OwenVery nice host, very helpful. Campsites were perfect, apparently just added over the summer. Bathhouse was kept clean and was in good order, showers use quarters to make them work, but nice and clean.
