Canoe Harbor State Forest Campground Introduce
For local outdoor enthusiasts seeking an authentic 'camping near me' experience, Canoe Harbor State Forest Campground, located in Grayling, MI 49738, USA, offers a fantastic option. Situated within a state forest, this campground at (989) 821-6125 or +1 989-821-6125 serves as an excellent base for a variety of activities, particularly for hikers and anglers. The reviews highlight its prime location and suitability for those who appreciate a more rustic and nature-focused camping environment.
One of the standout features of Canoe Harbor State Forest Campground is its direct access to outdoor recreational opportunities. According to a satisfied camper, a hiking trail runs along the edge of the campground, making it exceptionally convenient for hikers looking to explore the surrounding state forest. This integration of the campground with the trail system allows for seamless transitions between camping and hiking adventures, appealing to those who enjoy immersing themselves in nature on foot.
The campground is also highly regarded by fly fishermen. Its location provides access points to the renowned Mason Tract, a celebrated stretch of the Au Sable River known for its excellent fly fishing. The convenience of camping near these access points is a significant advantage for anglers who wish to spend their time enjoying the river. This feature positions Canoe Harbor State Forest Campground as a prime destination for fly fishing enthusiasts in the local area.
Furthermore, Canoe Harbor caters specifically to those who enjoy water-based activities like kayaking and canoeing. The reviews mention the presence of four designated campsites located next to the river. These sites are particularly intended for kayakers and canoers who are undertaking river trips and require an overnight stop. This thoughtful provision demonstrates an understanding of the needs of paddlers exploring the Au Sable River, offering them a convenient and accessible place to camp during their journey.
It's important for potential visitors to understand the nature of Canoe Harbor State Forest Campground. As indicated by a reviewer, there is "no electric available" at the campsites. This reinforces its designation as a state forest campground, which typically emphasizes a more primitive camping experience without the amenities often found in private campgrounds or RV resorts. Campers planning to stay here should come prepared with their own power sources, such as battery packs or generators (while being mindful of noise for other campers).
Despite the lack of electrical hookups, the campground is praised for its cleanliness. One reviewer noted that it is "kept very clean," while another specifically mentioned "clean outhouses." Maintaining clean communal facilities is essential for a comfortable camping experience, and this positive feedback suggests that the campground management prioritizes hygiene. The availability of "good tasting water from the pump" is another appreciated basic amenity, ensuring that campers have access to a potable water source.
The atmosphere of Canoe Harbor State Forest Campground is described as "Not a party type campground." This is a significant characteristic for those seeking a peaceful and quiet retreat in nature. The emphasis seems to be on enjoying the natural surroundings and the outdoor activities the area offers, rather than a lively, social camping scene. This tranquil ambiance can be a major draw for individuals and families looking to escape the noise and bustle of everyday life.
Another reviewer echoed the positive sentiment, calling it a "Great spot to camp while hiking the Mason Tract." This again highlights the campground's strategic location for those interested in exploring the Mason Tract trails. The mention of "clean outhouses and good tasting water from the pump" reinforces the earlier comments about the well-maintained basic amenities.
Based on the available information, Canoe Harbor State Forest Campground offers a rustic and nature-oriented camping experience. Its prime location provides exceptional access to hiking trails within the Mason Tract and fly fishing opportunities on the Au Sable River. The dedicated riverside campsites cater specifically to kayakers and canoers on river trips. While there are no electric hookups, the campground is noted for its cleanliness, including the outhouses, and the availability of potable water from a hand pump. The peaceful and quiet atmosphere makes it an ideal choice for outdoor lovers seeking a tranquil escape rather than a party environment.
For local users looking for a 'camping near me' option that prioritizes natural beauty and access to outdoor activities like hiking, fly fishing, and paddling, Canoe Harbor State Forest Campground in Grayling is a compelling choice. Its rustic nature requires campers to be self-sufficient in terms of power, but the clean facilities and prime location more than compensate for the lack of modern amenities for many outdoor enthusiasts. There is no promotional information available in the reviews, such as special rates or booking procedures beyond the phone number. Therefore, interested individuals are encouraged to call (989) 821-6125 or +1 989-821-6125 to inquire about site availability, any specific regulations, and to make reservations. Canoe Harbor State Forest Campground Reviews
Great state campground for many uses for outdoor lovers. The hiking trail goes through the edge of the campground, so good for hikers. It's great for fly fisherman and has few access points on the Mason Tract. There are 4 sites down next to the river for kayakers/canoers who are doing trips and need a quick night to stay. No electric available, but it is kept very clean. Not a party type campground.

Sep 01, 2023 · Will JewellBeen coming here for years and it was never this bad. Was here for 10 days the toilet near our campsite by the parking lot near river path was 3/4 full when we got here, 7 days into our stay was almost full. Now it's up to the floor wear the bottom of the toilet is. the others are getting really full also. Two of the water pumps are down was told the water is bad the third pump has to be pumped 30 times before water comes out and is so cloudy and nasty looking and the pump locks up. No hand sanitizer. We were told people keep steeling it so can't put it in the camps. We drove to the other state campgrounds to check them out and get water, their bathrooms are clean and have hand sanitizer, and their pumps all work with clean clear water. There is no excuse for the condition of this campground
