Devils Lake Group Camp Introduce
Attention all organizers of large gatherings, families, and groups in the Merrimac, Wisconsin vicinity! Are you searching for exceptional "camping near me" that can comfortably accommodate your entire party? Look no further than Devils Lake Group Camp, located in Merrimac, WI 53561, USA. This established group camping area, beloved by many for nearly two decades, offers spacious campsites within a natural forest setting, providing an ideal backdrop for group adventures and shared outdoor experiences.
The environment at Devils Lake Group Camp is characterized by its well-sized campsites nestled amongst the trees, offering a sense of immersion in nature. The campsites are primarily dirt and surrounded by the tranquility of the forest, creating a rustic and authentic camping feel. A significant advantage highlighted by a long-time visitor is the thoughtful spacing between campsites. This layout ensures a degree of privacy, allowing your group to enjoy its activities without being overly aware of other campers nearby. Each campsite is equipped to handle large groups, with the largest Lot number one capable of accommodating around 50 people. Lots two through twelve are also generously sized, suitable for groups of up to 25 individuals. This makes Devils Lake Group Camp an excellent choice for family reunions, scout troops, school outings, and other large gatherings seeking a "camping near me" solution.
In terms of services and features, Devils Lake Group Camp provides essential amenities for group camping. Each campsite includes approximately four picnic tables, offering ample space for communal meals and activities. Additionally, each site features a fire pit, perfect for campfires, cooking over an open flame, and creating a warm and inviting gathering spot in the evenings. Parking is also available at each campsite, with space for around six cars, providing convenient access for group members. It is important to note, as highlighted by a recurring visitor, that the campsites do not have individual water or electricity hookups. Campers should come prepared with their own water supply and power solutions if needed.
A central feature of the group camp is a shared set of showers located in the center of the camping area. This provides a facility for campers to freshen up during their stay. However, a crucial point raised by a long-term user is the cleanliness of the toilet and shower areas. The feedback indicates that these facilities are not cleaned as frequently as desired, which is an important consideration for groups planning an extended stay. It is advisable for groups to come prepared with their own hygiene supplies and to manage expectations regarding the cleanliness of the communal facilities.
For those considering a visit to Devils Lake Group Camp, it's essential to be aware of the reservation system. The most popular lots, numbering around 10 to 12, require booking approximately 12 months in advance due to their high demand. This long lead time underscores the popularity and desirability of this group camping location. If you are planning a group camping trip and considering Devils Lake Group Camp as your "camping near me" option, early booking is highly recommended to secure your preferred campsite.
Another important environmental note from a camper is the presence of raccoons in the area. To ensure the safety of your food supplies and to avoid attracting wildlife, it is crucial to lock up and store all food items securely. Taking precautions against wildlife encounters is a standard practice in many outdoor camping environments and should be a priority for all groups staying at Devils Lake Group Camp.
Currently, there is no specific promotional information available online for Devils Lake Group Camp. As it is a part of the Devils Lake State Park system, any potential discounts or special offers would likely be associated with state park programs or seasonal variations. To inquire about any potential promotions or group rates, it is best to contact the Devils Lake State Park authorities directly through their official website or by phone if a specific contact for the group camp is available.
In summary, Devils Lake Group Camp offers a fantastic "camping near me" opportunity for large groups seeking spacious campsites within a natural forest setting near Merrimac, Wisconsin. The well-sized lots, ample picnic tables, and fire pits provide a solid foundation for a group camping experience. However, it is important to be aware of the lack of water and electricity at individual campsites, the shared shower facilities which may not be consistently clean, the need for advance booking for popular lots, and the presence of wildlife requiring secure food storage. By being prepared for these conditions and booking well in advance, your group can enjoy the amazing natural environment and the spaciousness that Devils Lake Group Camp has to offer. Devils Lake Group Camp Reviews
We have been coming to the devils lake group campsite for close to 20 years now. It is really amazing but unfortunately there are a few things that need to be worked on. First of all there are about 10 or 12 lots there that need to be reserved about 12 months in advance. Lot number one is the largest that holds about 50 people. Lots two through 12 can accommodate up to 25. They are all amazing and great but don’t have any water or electricity. There is one set of showers in the center. This is honestly the biggest problem, the toilet area and showers are always very dirty. Not cleaned very often. It would really be nice if they would be cleaned more often.
Jun 11, 2024 · PokegemzThe group camp has well sized campsites for large groups. There’s space for lots of tents, and each site has around 4 picnic tables and a fire pit. The campsites are spaced a good distance apart so that you mostly do not see other groups from your site. They are mostly dirt and surrounded by forest. There are parking spots for around 6 cars available at each campsite.Make sure you lock up and store away all of your food because there are raccoons which will get to it. 😅
Jul 13, 2023 · Nina MGroup Site 4 was perfect for 20 people with room for more. Accessible to hiking trails.
Sep 24, 2024 · M RGreat sites for about 15-20 people. We had 8 tents on our site and still room for more. Only issue we had is the traffic getting to the group site. It was Memorial weekend and the Northshore was at full capacity and they sent everyone to the South side. Too many people needed park stickers. Some bathrooms have been upgraded and all were clean.
Jun 01, 2019 · Steve BraschI'm reluctant to review this site because it's such a gem that I don't want it to be overrun. Sure, there's raccoons at night but this is their home, not yours, and keeping food and toiletries out of your tent will avert any problems. The area is generally super quiet at night, especially compared to the North Shore campground which has over 400 camping sites. The bird noises referred to in another review are Great Blue Herons that nest in the trees in the middle of the group site. If there guttural squawking bothers you then you're better off staying in a motel! Hiking up a 500 bluff and from there it's ~ a 5 mile hike around the lake. Best of all: there's little or no cell service at this site!
