Double Shoals Campground Introduce
For local outdoor enthusiasts in Virginia and surrounding areas searching for the perfect "camping near me" experience that combines adventure with natural beauty, Double Shoals Campground offers a unique opportunity. Situated within the renowned New River Trail State Park near Galax, this campsite is specifically tailored for those exploring the 57-mile linear park, particularly popular among cyclists and kayakers. While providing a more primitive camping experience, its strategic location and access to the well-maintained New River Trail make it an ideal stopover for multi-day excursions or a tranquil overnight stay in nature.
The environment surrounding Double Shoals Campground is intrinsically linked to the New River Trail State Park. The trail itself follows an abandoned railroad bed, offering a relatively flat and scenic pathway that meanders alongside the historic New River. Campers at Double Shoals can expect to be immersed in the natural beauty of the region, with the river flowing nearby, providing opportunities for peaceful sounds and potential wildlife viewing. The trail is typically lined with trees, offering shade and a sense of seclusion. The surrounding landscape features the rolling hills and woodlands of southwestern Virginia, contributing to a serene and picturesque camping setting. Reviews highlight the ease of accessing the campsite directly from the trail, emphasizing its convenient location for those actively using the New River Trail for biking or hiking.
The services at Double Shoals Campground are intentionally basic, catering to the needs of trail users seeking a convenient overnight stop. Based on customer reviews, the campground provides a surprisingly clean portable restroom (Port-a-John) and a nearby trash can for waste disposal. However, it is crucial for local users to note that potable water is not readily available at the campsite itself. Campers are advised to bring their own water supply or have a reliable method for purifying water from the New River. While firewood sales are not mentioned in the provided reviews, it's always prudent to inquire about the availability of firewood or to plan on bringing your own, adhering to any state park regulations regarding campfires. The focus of Double Shoals is on providing a functional and accessible overnight location for those actively engaged in activities along the New River Trail, rather than offering extensive amenities.
The key features of Double Shoals Campground are its direct access to the New River Trail and its suitability as a base for bike camping and kayaking trips. For cyclists exploring the trail, Double Shoals offers a perfect mid-journey campsite. Reviews indicate that the New River Trail is well-maintained with a hard-packed surface suitable for various types of bicycles, including those with 700/32 tires (though wider tires like 700/35 or 38 are preferred by some for added comfort). The presence of potable water stations and additional portable restrooms at intervals along the New River Trail itself enhances the appeal of using Double Shoals as part of a longer biking adventure. Similarly, for kayakers paddling the New River, the campground provides a convenient stopping point for an overnight stay, allowing them to break up their river journey and enjoy a night under the stars. The "semi-secluded" nature of the campsite, as mentioned in a review, suggests a degree of peace and quiet away from more developed areas.
One notable feature highlighted in the reviews is the easy access to the campsite from the New River Trail. One reviewer described the hike in as "easy as in flat, no climbs or descents," with a well-maintained, wide, and smooth path. The presence of benches every mile or so along the trail caters to individuals who may require frequent rests, making the approach to Double Shoals accessible to a wide range of users. This ease of access, even in challenging weather conditions like snow, underscores the campground's practicality for those traveling the trail. The experience of a reviewer who stopped for a night during a long road trip further emphasizes the campground's appeal as a convenient and worthwhile overnight destination, even for those not solely focused on biking or kayaking.

Double Shoals Campground Reviews
Perfect bike/kayak campsite to test out bike camping while riding The New River Trail. Port a John was surprisingly clean and had trash can nearby but need to bring your own water or way to purify River water at campsite. New River Trail well maintained with potable water at a few stops and port a Johns along the trail. Biking with a Trek FX3 with 700/32 tires and as long as trail dry it is hard packed and could even have 28 tires. My preference would be 700/35 or 38 tires.
Jun 15, 2024 · P DWe stopped for a night headed home after a long road trip. Semi secluded spot. Easy hike in, easy as in flat, no climbs or decents, well maintained wide and smooth path with benches every mile or so for people who require frequent rests. It was 26° and snowing the night we went but we regret nothing. Well worth it.
Apr 23, 2021 · J ColeSites are flat! Secluded and quiet. Porta potty and benches and tables here. Trees not idea for hammocking so better bring a tent.
Aug 06, 2023 · Allan BuccolaAbout 3.5 miles in from the closest parking at the New River Deli. Two camping spots with fire pits and picnic tables.
Jun 22, 2023 · Jeremy PageThis is a small, but very nice camping area on the New River, approximately 2 miles downriver of the Fries Junction area. There are basically only two campsites, but several people could camp here comfortably. I've spent two nights here in recent years and it was very peaceful. The sound from an area of rapids just upriver lulled me to sleep. I feel that the $17 per night fee is a bit much, considering there are no facilities aside from a vault toilet. I suppose you could say that the atmosphere is worth the price. There is no "piped" water here, but there are a couple small springs nearby on the opposite side of the trail. I gathered water from one of those springs. I filtered AND boiled it just in case, and had no ill-effects. So if you can hike or bike in with your gear, try spending the night here. I think you'll enjoy it. By the way, there are picnic tables, fire rings, and a good amount of grassy area to pitch your tent.
