Fishtrap Recreation Area Introduce
For local users searching for "camping near me" who appreciate a more rustic and self-sufficient outdoor experience, Fishtrap Recreation Area, located in Sprague, WA 99032, USA, offers dispersed camping opportunities. It's important to note, as indicated by customer reviews, that Fishtrap Recreation Area is not a traditional campground with developed amenities but rather a location for boondocking and dispersed camping. This means that you should be prepared for a more primitive experience.
One enthusiastic reviewer who "love it!" described setting down a rug for a picnic and reading by the water, highly recommending it as "a quiet getaway for moms!" This paints a picture of a peaceful and scenic environment, ideal for those seeking solitude and a connection with nature. The presence of water suggests potential for pleasant views and perhaps some water-related activities, although specifics aren't detailed.
Another review explicitly states, "If you like to boondock and enjoy dispersed camping, this is a great place." This confirms that Fishtrap Recreation Area caters to those who prefer a less structured camping experience, often without the amenities of developed campgrounds. Boondocking typically involves camping in areas without hookups (water, electricity, sewer) and often in more remote settings.
The landscape at Fishtrap Recreation Area appears to be varied, as one review mentions, "You can choose from open meadow to brushy plains to wooded sites." This diversity allows campers to select an environment that best suits their preferences. Some campsites are noted to be "right off the main road," offering easier access, while others are "a few dozen yards further from it," potentially providing more seclusion. Additionally, some "tent/van sites are accessed by more primitive (and bumpy) Jeep trail," suggesting that certain areas might be more suitable for those with appropriate vehicles and a taste for a bit more adventure in reaching their campsite.
While the overall atmosphere is described as "pretty spread apart and tranquil," one reviewer noted a potential nearby "shooting range judging by the sounds of target practice." This is something to be aware of if you are particularly sensitive to noise. However, the reviewer still found the peacefulness "addictive" and the area "very clean," indicating that the positive aspects outweighed this occasional noise.
A crucial piece of information for anyone considering camping at Fishtrap Recreation Area is that "This location is 100% pack in/pack out as there’s no waste receptacles." This underscores the nature of dispersed camping, where campers are responsible for taking all their trash with them to maintain the cleanliness of the area. Furthermore, the review states, "Theres also no potable water or any amenities associated with park campgrounds as it’s dispersed camping, not a campground." Therefore, campers must bring their own water and be fully self-sufficient in terms of other needs like sanitation.
The soundscape of the area includes both natural and human-made elements. One reviewer mentions, "The train is neat as you can hear the horns off in the distance with a bit of regularity." This could add a unique, albeit distant, auditory element to the camping experience. The same reviewer also notes, "You can hear the interstate off in the distance if you listen for it," suggesting that while the area feels removed, it's not entirely isolated from the sounds of civilization.
Accessing Fishtrap Recreation Area involves navigating a road that is "graded but it does have some washboarding," and you also "have to cross the R/R tracks." This information is important for those with different types of vehicles. The review also mentions that "Big rigs can get in but site selection diminishes as you get closer to the lake due to overgrowth and side scuffing." This suggests that while larger vehicles can access the area, finding suitable campsites closer to the water might be more challenging due to vegetation and potential for scratches.
Despite the lack of amenities and the presence of some distant noises, the overall sentiment from at least one reviewer is highly positive: "I’d stay here again for sure. The peacefulness is addictive and it’s very clean." This highlights the primary appeal of Fishtrap Recreation Area for those seeking a tranquil and natural dispersed camping experience.
For local users searching for "camping near me" who are comfortable with dispersed camping, Fishtrap Recreation Area offers a variety of landscapes to choose from, a generally peaceful atmosphere (with the noted exception of potential shooting range sounds), and a clean environment where self-sufficiency is key. Be prepared to pack in all your supplies, including water, and pack out all your waste. The access road has some rough spots, and those with big rigs might have more limited options for lakeside camping. However, the opportunity for a quiet and natural getaway appears to be a significant draw.

Jul 03, 2024 · Vincent SheridanIt's chill, would be more chill but always un-buried poop everywhere. Which my dog promptly finds. People living out of their cars here. Also as of April 28th 2025, LOTS OF TICKS , LOST COUNT OF HOW MANY TICKS
Apr 29, 2025 · XLots of open spots available. Not all of them are flat and some spots would be difficult for tents. Gravel road about a mile long from the entrance to the last site near the lake, easy access for any class vehicle. 14 day limit. 1 Porta potty which is serviced regularly, not enough at peaks to be sure.Great hiking, access to the lake was closed to vehicles and requires discovery pass. Cell service is good (verizon).Trains come through about half a dozen times throughout the day and night with a crossing nearby resulting in whistle signals. Coyotes can be heard but I saw none, hawks and owls are about. Watch your small pets! Fire bans in effect mid Sept.
Sep 23, 2022 · R WeeksAbsolutely beautiful place to set up camp. Very tent and rv friendly. Easy to find a place with no one too close or easy to find a place where a group can set up
