Forbes State Forest Motorized Site 2 Introduce
For local outdoor enthusiasts in the Somerset, Pennsylvania, region seeking a more secluded and self-sufficient "camping near me" experience, Forbes State Forest Motorized Site 2, located on Hickory Flats Rd, Somerset, PA 15501, USA, presents an opportunity to immerse oneself in the natural beauty of Forbes State Forest. This motorized campsite offers a sense of remoteness and direct access to hiking areas, appealing to those who prioritize privacy and a more primitive camping style. When local users browse platforms under the category "camping near me" looking for a less developed and more adventurous option, Forbes State Forest Motorized Site 2 warrants consideration, keeping in mind its specific characteristics and requirements.
Based on feedback from fellow campers, Forbes State Forest Motorized Site 2 offers a spacious camping area. One reviewer noted that their site was "roomy enough" to accommodate an Aliner camper and a van, along with a separate private area for a tent. This suggests that the site provides ample space for setting up camp and allows for some flexibility in arranging sleeping and living areas. For local users searching for "camping near me" with enough space for multiple vehicles or a larger setup, this campsite appears well-suited.
A significant advantage highlighted in the reviews is the easy access to numerous "hiking areas on two track ways and roads." This indicates that the campsite serves as a convenient basecamp for exploring the extensive trail network within Forbes State Forest. Local users who are passionate about hiking and seeking "camping near me" with immediate trail access will find this feature particularly appealing. The variety of trail types, including two-track ways and roads, suggests options for different skill levels and preferences, from leisurely walks to more challenging hikes.
The review also mentions that the campsite is "well kept if the previous campers clean up their mess." This underscores the importance of practicing Leave No Trace principles, especially in more remote and less frequently serviced camping areas. While the natural environment is appreciated, the responsibility for maintaining the cleanliness and integrity of the site falls largely on the campers themselves. Local users choosing this "camping near me" option should be prepared to pack out all trash and leave the site in good condition for future visitors.
A crucial piece of information from a recent review is that camping at Forbes State Forest Motorized Site 2 is no longer free. As of the time of the review, there is a fee of $10 per night, in addition to a $6.50 registration fee. This is an important factor for local users to consider when budgeting for their "camping near me" trip. It's advisable to verify the current fee structure and payment methods through the Pennsylvania DCNR website or by contacting the Forbes State Forest district office directly at the provided phone number: (724) 238-1200 or +1 724-238-1200.
The remoteness of the site is consistently mentioned as a positive aspect by campers who appreciate a more secluded experience. However, this remoteness also comes with certain implications regarding amenities. As explicitly stated in one of the reviews, it is essential to be prepared as "there is no water source and no bathroom" available at the campsite. This is a critical consideration for local users planning to camp here. They must bring their own water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene, and they will need to have a plan for managing human waste responsibly and in accordance with Leave No Trace principles and any regulations of Forbes State Forest.
The lack of on-site water and bathroom facilities defines the nature of this "camping near me" option as primitive or backcountry camping. It caters to individuals and groups who are comfortable with self-sufficiency and have the necessary gear and knowledge to manage these aspects of camping safely and responsibly. Local users who are new to camping or prefer more developed campgrounds with amenities should be aware of these limitations before choosing Forbes State Forest Motorized Site 2.
Given that this is a motorized campsite within Forbes State Forest, it is likely that certain regulations apply regarding vehicle access, parking, and camping activities. Local users should familiarize themselves with the rules and guidelines of Forbes State Forest, which can typically be found on the DCNR website or obtained from the forest district office. This might include information on campfire regulations, permitted camping areas, and any requirements for permits or reservations, in addition to the camping fees now in place.
While no specific promotional offers are mentioned in the reviews, the inherent appeal of a remote campsite with hiking access within a state forest is a significant draw for a certain segment of the local camping community. For those seeking an authentic and less-trafficked "camping near me" experience, the natural environment and the opportunity for solitude are their own reward. However, it is always wise to inquire with the Forbes State Forest district office about any current advisories, closures, or special conditions that might affect camping at this site.
In conclusion, Forbes State Forest Motorized Site 2 offers a unique "camping near me" opportunity for local residents around Somerset, PA, who value remoteness, spacious campsites, and direct access to hiking trails within the beautiful Forbes State Forest. However, it is crucial to be fully prepared for a self-sufficient camping experience, as there are no on-site water or bathroom facilities. Additionally, campers should be aware of the current camping fees and adhere to Leave No Trace principles and all regulations of Forbes State Forest. For those who are well-equipped and seek a more primitive and private outdoor adventure, Forbes State Forest Motorized Site 2 could be an ideal local escape.

We loved it. Roomy enough for our Aliner and van with a special private area for my son's tent. Lots of hiking areas on two track ways and roads. Well kept if the previous campers clean up their mess.
Apr 27, 2025 · Dale AlfredoSomething new is that camping is no longer free. $10 per night plus $6.50 registration fee. I enjoy the remoteness of the site. Be prepared as there is no water source and no bathroom.
Sep 02, 2023 · Barry Van GemertThe other motorized site up on Laurel Mountain is better, but is busier and harder to reserve. Overall, I'd rank this as the #3 campsite of the 6 (4 Forbes and 2 Buchanan) total I've been to. You are a little near the main road but still feel a bit isolated.Problem is turnpike (less than 1 mile away) noise in the distance, however, it's still pretty great since it allows a cripple as myself to get away and isolated. Still a great feature of our state forest system. Look at other states and you'll be hard pressed to find one with free isolated vehicle camping.
Dec 25, 2021 · G PStayed in site 2. Great for hammocks but not a lot of flat space for a tent. It does have a picnic table and fire pit that were both in good shape
Aug 11, 2022 · LiviaNice and away from other campers. Trails are in okay shape. Nearby highway noise detracts greatly from the experience.
