Gerald Freeman Campground Introduce
Looking for a "camping near me" in West Virginia? Gerald Freeman Campground, located at 1151 Kanawha Run Rd, Sutton, WV 26601, USA, offers a potentially scenic camping experience. You can reach them at (304) 765-2267 or their mobile number +1 304-765-2267 to inquire about bookings and availability. Based on the available customer reviews, the campground has some appealing aspects, such as its beauty and playgrounds, but also some drawbacks to consider.
One reviewer began by explicitly stating that their feedback was not directed at the staff, maintenance, or the ranger, whom they found to be "super nice, helpful, accommodating and fair." This positive acknowledgment of the campground staff is a significant plus. However, this reviewer raised concerns about the camp spaces being "too close together," resulting in a lack of privacy and insufficient room. They also highlighted a negative experience with individuals participating in weekend bass tournaments, describing them as "extremely rude," lacking in etiquette, and entitled. This led to a situation where the reviewer's reserved camping spot had been taken upon their arrival. While the ranger was helpful in issuing a refund for one night, this incident suggests potential issues with site management during busy periods. Furthermore, the reviewer recounted a disruptive experience while fishing, with tournament bass boats racing by and cutting in front of their fishing spot, causing significant frustration.
Another reviewer had a more positive initial impression, describing the campground as "very pretty" and noting that "the sites are a good size." They also praised the playgrounds as "excellent," making it an attractive option for families with children. However, their experience was marred by an incident involving the mowing crew. According to this review, the crew "mowed through our campsite while we were sitting at the picnic table (right beside our legs)." This resulted in debris being thrown onto the reviewer's brother, causing a few welts. Alarmingly, their one-year-old daughter, who was standing nearby, almost got hit as well. This incident raises concerns about safety and the timing of maintenance activities, leading the reviewer to suggest either an earlier check-out time or mowing after check-out.
The environment of Gerald Freeman Campground is described as "very pretty," suggesting a scenic natural setting, likely near a body of water given the mention of fishing and bass tournaments. The presence of playgrounds indicates a family-friendly environment with recreational facilities for children. However, the proximity of campsites to each other might detract from the sense of privacy that some campers seek.
In terms of services, the campground has staff, maintenance personnel, and a ranger who are reportedly helpful and accommodating. They offer reserved camping spots. There are playgrounds for children. While not explicitly detailed, the presence of bass tournaments suggests facilities and access suitable for fishing. However, the reviews also highlight potential issues with site management (reserved spots being taken) and the timing/execution of maintenance (mowing through occupied campsites).
The features of Gerald Freeman Campground include good-sized campsites (according to one reviewer, though another found them too close), excellent playgrounds, and a location that supports fishing, including bass tournaments. However, the lack of privacy due to closely spaced sites and the potential for disruptive behavior from tournament participants are negative features mentioned. The incident with the mowing crew also points to a need for better safety protocols during grounds maintenance.
Based on the provided information, there is no explicit promotional material. The beauty of the location and the quality of the playgrounds could be seen as implicit selling points for those seeking a scenic and family-friendly "camping near me." However, the negative feedback regarding site spacing, the behavior of some tournament participants, and the mowing incident temper these positives.
For local users searching for "camping near me" in the Sutton, West Virginia, area, Gerald Freeman Campground offers a location described as "very pretty" with "excellent playgrounds," which could be appealing to families. However, potential visitors should be aware of the reported lack of privacy due to closely spaced campsites and the possibility of encountering rude behavior from some participants in bass tournaments, particularly on weekends. Additionally, the incident with the mowing crew suggests a need for caution regarding maintenance activities within the campground. While the staff and ranger are praised for their helpfulness, these other factors should be taken into consideration when deciding if Gerald Freeman Campground is the right fit for your "camping near me" experience. It might be wise to inquire about site spacing and the schedule of any planned events or maintenance during your potential stay.

Gerald Freeman Campground Reviews
First I want to say this review has nothing to do with staff, maintenance or the ranger they were super nice, helpful, accommodating and fair. The camp spaces are too close together and you have no privacy or enough room. On weekends people competing in bass tournaments are extremely rude, have no etiquette and entitled. We had a spot reserved and when we arrived they had taken our reserved camping spot, the ranger was helpful though and we were issued a refund for 1 night. When we went out fishing all day tournament bass races by,cut in front of where we were fishing. Had my young nephew not been with me I would have went off.
May 21, 2024 · Jeff AllenThis campground was very pretty and the sites are a good size. The playgrounds are excellent. The only problem we had was when the mowing crew came in they mowed through our campsite while we were sitting at the picnic table (right beside our legs). They threw debris onto my brother that caused a few welts. His 1 year old daughter was standing beside him and almost got hit with a piece of debris. They need to make the Check out time earlier or have the mowing crew come in after checkout time.
Aug 07, 2023 · Leighann ColeMaybe too early in the season, but very little maintenance has been performed. Fortunately most camp sites had been mowed, but no tables were moved to mow under them and no trimming was apparent. The joint almost seemed neglected and sad when you think it’s ‘maintained’ by the Army Corps of Engineers.
May 08, 2024 · G CarpenterBeautiful campground, awesome staff ,well kept grounds.. only complaint is children running wild through your private site ,toddlers screaming all night,no respect for others...come on parents, others want to enjoy what they pay for also.
Jul 03, 2024 · Jason CoolBeautiful campground, nice people, but fair warning there is no cell service there!!! Like none at all!!! Great for a get away but don't expect to be able to stream movies or upload your beautiful pictures till you go back home.Clean, beautiful and spacious!!! Reasonably priced, and small store 1/4 mile away for camping gear/charcoal, milk ect.
