Gulf State Park Campground Introduce
Looking for an exceptional "camping near me" experience in Gulf Shores, Alabama? Gulf State Park Campground, located at 22050 Campground Rd, Gulf Shores, AL 36542, USA, offers a vast and well-organized camping destination with a wide array of amenities and natural attractions. If your search under the "camping near me" category prioritizes a large, well-maintained campground with access to both natural trails and Gulf Coast beaches, Gulf State Park Campground is definitely worth considering.
Immerse Yourself in a Diverse and Expansive Environment
Gulf State Park Campground is situated within the larger Gulf State Park, renowned for its diverse ecosystems encompassing beaches, dunes, freshwater swamps, and woodlands. One reviewer described traversing a "long elevated boardwalk" and crossing a bridge over a canal to reach the campground, highlighting the integration of the camping area with the surrounding natural environment. The park boasts "miles of cleared trails through wooded and marshy areas," offering ample opportunities for hiking, biking, and exploring the local flora and fauna.
The campground's location also provides access to the Gulf of Mexico. One visitor parked across the highway at the beach (for a $10 day-use fee) and utilized a "pedestrian bridge that goes over the highway" to reach the beach area, indicating convenient, albeit potentially separate, access to the shoreline. Furthermore, the presence of a "fantastic Beach and fishing pier" accessible from the park suggests that campers can easily enjoy the Gulf Coast's renowned beaches and fishing opportunities.
It's important for local users to be aware of the local wildlife. One review mentions that Gulf State Park is "a good place to see gators" and that it is "not uncommon to see venomous snakes." While this adds to the unique natural experience, campers should exercise caution and be aware of their surroundings, especially when near water or in wooded areas.
The sheer size of the campground is also a significant environmental factor. With "over 500 sites," it is described as a "huge campground," which could mean a bustling atmosphere, especially during peak seasons. However, the reviewer who visited in January noted that it was not crowded at that time, suggesting that the experience might vary significantly depending on the time of year.
Benefit from a Wide Range of Services and Organization
Gulf State Park Campground is described as "tremendous," "well-kept," and "well-organized," indicating a high standard of maintenance and management. While specific details about all services are not provided in the reviews, we can infer several key offerings:
- Over 500 Campsites: The sheer number of sites suggests a capacity to accommodate a large number of campers, potentially offering a variety of site types to suit different needs (e.g., RV, tent).
- Paved Trails: The presence of "28 miles of paved trails" is a significant amenity for biking, walking, and other forms of recreation within the park.
- Beach Access: Convenient access to the Gulf of Mexico beaches via a pedestrian bridge (from parking across the highway) allows campers to enjoy the coastline.
- Fishing Pier Access: The availability of a "fantastic Beach and fishing pier" provides opportunities for fishing enthusiasts.
- Hiking Trails: The "miles of cleared trails through wooded and marshy areas" cater to hikers and nature lovers.
- Pedestrian Bridge: A dedicated pedestrian bridge over the highway facilitates safe access to the beach from the campground area.
- Boardwalk: A "long elevated boardwalk" offers a scenic route through certain areas of the park, likely providing views of marshy or sensitive ecosystems.
One notable complaint in the reviews is "a lack of trash receptacles, even in the campground." Local users should be aware of this potential inconvenience and plan to manage their trash responsibly, potentially needing to carry it out to designated collection points if receptacles are indeed scarce.
While specific information on hook-ups (water, electricity, sewer), restroom facilities, laundry, and other common campground amenities is not detailed in these reviews, the description of a "well-kept" and "well-organized" campground suggests that these essential services are likely available. However, to obtain precise details, contacting the campground directly using the provided phone number is recommended.

Gulf State Park Campground Reviews
We parked across the highway at the beach. It was $10 for the day. We walked across the pedestrian bridge that goes over the highway. That was pretty cool. Then there was a long elevated board walk that we traversed before crossing a bridge over the canal into the campground. Miles of cleared trails through wooded and marshy areas. Very nice place to visit, it was a cloudy rainy day in early March. I would love to go back during summer! Only real complaint was a lack of trash receptacles, even in the campground. I've heard this is a good place to see gators, and it is not uncommon to see venomous snakes.
Apr 22, 2025 · Skyler LinnThis is a tremendous well-kept well-organized huge campground with over 500 sites! We were here in January so I cannot comment on what a crowded place this could become. But with 28 miles of paved trails, Plus access to a fantastic Beach and fishing pier, this is a terrific place to spend time! As far as camping goes, costs are pretty steep at about $75 per night when fees are added
Feb 03, 2025 · Mike LongenbakerVery well equipped park. Try to get a site on the lake. Great washrooms and laundry. Loved the dog park with a beach and miles of paved bicycle trails. The park and campground are huge and seem very well managed. Was too cold to spend time on the beach but there’s an amazing fishing pier and a couple restaurants.
Jan 10, 2025 · Kath JohnWe were in site 439. Great site with only a view on nature on our camping side. Easy pull through with plenty of room. Spacing between sites was great. Lots of plays for hiking, biking and walking to the beach.
Jan 18, 2025 · RpkOver the past two years I've enjoyed the state park immensely. There's almost 27 miles of paved trails most of which are shaded. The trails are large enough to accommodate bicycles and pedestrians. There's also also bathrooms available several locations along the trails.
