Hazel Meadow Introduce
Welcome to Hazel Meadow, a captivating campground nestled in the scenic surroundings of Pollock Pines, CA 95726, USA. As a premier destination within the "Camping Near Me" category, Hazel Meadow offers an immersive outdoor experience for individuals, couples, and families looking to reconnect with nature. Located within the broader Sly Park Recreation Area, Hazel Meadow provides a tranquil escape with a wealth of recreational opportunities.
Environment: Hazel Meadow is situated approximately 3.5 miles from the main entrance of Sly Park Recreation Area, offering a serene and picturesque setting. The campground boasts beautiful forest views, with sites nestled among a mix of pine and oak trees, providing ample shade and a true "Sierra experience." This well-kept and forest-dense area contributes to a cooler environment, especially in the camping loops further back from the water, which can be a welcome relief during warmer months. The campground is also a stone's throw from Jenkinson Lake, with many sites offering easy access to the water's edge, often within 100 yards. A significant feature of the immediate environment is the carefully restored Hazel Meadow itself, which functions as a vital part of the ecosystem. This meadow plays a crucial role in preventing flooding by slowing and spreading floodwaters and naturally filtering out sediment and pollutants, thus protecting Jenkinson Lake, which serves as a local drinking water source. An ADA-compliant boardwalk winds through the meadow to the lake, allowing visitors to appreciate this delicate ecosystem without disturbing it. The broader Sly Park Recreation Area, where Hazel Meadow resides, is nestled in the Sierra foothills at an elevation of 3,500 feet, providing a diverse landscape for exploration.
Services: Hazel Meadow, as part of Sly Park Recreation Area, provides a range of essential services to ensure a comfortable camping experience. Each campsite, whether individual, family, or group, is equipped with a picnic table, a fire ring, and a barbecue. For convenience, vault toilets and water faucets are strategically located throughout the campgrounds, ensuring easy access to clean facilities and potable water. While there are no RV hook-ups, many sites can accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, and trailer parking is available, often with barbecue areas nearby. The park is managed by the El Dorado Irrigation District (EID), and their friendly staff, including park rangers and hosts, are regularly on rounds to assist campers and ensure park rules are followed. Reservations for campsites can be made online, with a two-night minimum for weekends and a three-night minimum during holiday weekends. Generator use is permitted during specific hours: 7:00 A.M. to 9:00 A.M., noon to 2:00 P.M., and 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. It's important to note that dogs are welcome but must adhere to county leash laws and are not allowed in the lake or streams due to drinking water regulations.
Features: Hazel Meadow offers a multitude of features that make it a highly desirable "Camping Near Me" destination. One of the most celebrated features is the access to a stunning waterfall trail. As customer reviews highlight, finding the waterfall is straightforward: "stay straight, past the bridge, and it'll be on your right." This makes for a delightful short hike, approximately one mile along the lakeshore from the Hazel Creek day-use parking area. Beyond the waterfall, the recreation area boasts over nine miles of trails around Jenkinson Lake, offering opportunities for hiking, biking, and even equestrian activities. These trails range from easy to moderate, with some more challenging sections for experienced hikers and bikers. The restored Hazel Meadow itself, with its ADA-compliant boardwalk and viewing platform, is a unique feature, allowing visitors of all mobilities to enjoy the beauty of the area and learn about its ecological significance through interpretive signage. Jenkinson Lake provides ample opportunities for fishing, boating (with designated launch ramps), kayaking, and swimming. The park also features various vantage points offering spectacular sights, making it a must-visit for nature photography enthusiasts. For those seeking group gatherings, there are designated group areas with amenities such as group barbecue grills and horseshoe pits. Family sites are also available to accommodate larger groups. The overall management of the park is highly praised by visitors, with well-maintained facilities and a peaceful atmosphere.
Promotional Information: Hazel Meadow at Sly Park Recreation Area is actively promoted as a family-friendly and accessible outdoor destination. The El Dorado Irrigation District (EID), which owns and operates the park, emphasizes its role in providing essential drinking water for El Dorado County while also offering extensive recreational opportunities. The recent restoration of Hazel Meadow, including the construction of the ADA-compliant boardwalk, has enhanced accessibility, making it an ideal spot for visitors with limited mobility to experience the Sierra Nevada's natural beauty. Promotional materials highlight the campground's proximity to Highway 50, making it a convenient "first choice" for those seeking a Sierra camping experience without a long drive from urban areas like Sacramento. The park often gets very busy on weekends and during July, indicating its popularity. Therefore, booking stays for mid-week (Monday-Thursday) is often recommended for those preferring a quieter experience. Visitors are encouraged to make reservations online well in advance, especially for peak seasons. Current information regarding park rules, fees, and any specific restrictions, such as boat launch restrictions at Jenkinson Lake to prevent invasive species, are communicated through the EID's official recreation website. The park also hosts various events and programs throughout the year, adding to its appeal. Hazel Meadow is truly a gem for anyone searching for "Camping Near Me" that combines stunning natural beauty, well-maintained facilities, and a commitment to preserving the environment for future generations.

Jul 18, 2019 · Anon YmousWent on a hike around the lake with a group of friends and their dogs. The hike is about 7-8 miles. It has really nice views of the lake. There are a lot of campgrounds in the area along with a boat dock. There is also a waterfall near the campground. It was a good hike. Mostly flat elevation but there were some uphill on the hike.
