Sly Guard Cabin Introduce
For local users and travelers seeking a unique blend of rustic charm and modern convenience in the heart of California's natural beauty, Sly Guard Cabin in Pollock Pines, CA, presents an exceptional opportunity. As a distinctive offering within the "Camping Near Me" category, this historic cabin provides direct access to services and goods that enhance a comfortable and adventurous outdoor experience. Located within the vast Eldorado National Forest, Sly Guard Cabin offers a tranquil retreat while remaining conveniently close to a wealth of recreational areas and local attractions.
Sly Guard Cabin is situated at an elevation of nearly 3,600 feet, nestled among majestic Ponderosa pines and cedars, offering a serene and shaded environment. Originally constructed in the early 1940s by the Forest Service as living quarters for rangers, the cabin retains its historic character while providing a cozy atmosphere. Reviewers consistently describe the setting as "beautiful scenery" and "very quiet," making it an ideal place to disconnect and relax. The cabin's grounds are enclosed by a split cedar fence, providing a sense of privacy and security. While the cabin is less remote than some other forest cabins, it still offers a genuine "cabin in the woods experience" without being overly isolated. Its location provides easy access to nearby hiking trails and recreational areas, ensuring a balance between seclusion and activity. Directions note a dirt road across from the fire station and an immediate left to the cabin sign, with a gate that guests need to open and close, adding to the sense of a private retreat.
Sly Guard Cabin offers a comprehensive array of amenities designed for a comfortable stay, blending a rustic feel with modern conveniences. The cabin features a full kitchen equipped with an electric stove, microwave, and refrigerator. While some guests have noted the refrigerator's freezing capabilities might be limited and the coffee maker could be cleaner, it provides the essential tools for meal preparation. An assortment of pots, pans, utensils, and dishes are typically available, though bringing specialty items or extra silverware (as only two spoons were noted by one reviewer) might be advisable. The living room is furnished with a couch/futon, a television, and a DVD player, complete with a collection of "random DVDs" for entertainment. For heating, the cabin has a wood stove and a propane wall heater, though one reviewer noted issues with the wall heater, electric heaters were available to "bring the temperature to an acceptable level." The bathroom is equipped with hot and cold running water, a sink, and a bathtub/shower combination. However, reviewers suggest not planning for "long showers because this is an old cabin with outdated equipment." The bedroom contains two twin beds; guests over 6 feet tall might find these beds challenging. It is essential to "bring your own sheets" and bedding, as these are not provided. A small "walk-in" closet offers enough room for luggage. Outside the cabin, guests will find a fire ring and a picnic table for outdoor enjoyment (note: fire restrictions may be in effect, so inquire about current rules). The cabin grounds are spacious enough to accommodate two tents, one RV/trailer/camper, and two boats, with a three-vehicle limit and a total occupant limit of 12 people (four inside the cabin, eight on the grounds). While there are no RV hookups, parking for RVs/trailers is available. Basic cleaning supplies are provided, but guests are expected to "pack out your own garbage."
The strategic location of Sly Guard Cabin makes it a fantastic base for exploring the diverse recreational opportunities in the Eldorado National Forest and surrounding areas. The cabin is "close to hiking trails and recreational areas," with the Cedar Park Trail just steps away, offering a paved 1.2-mile loop and an observation deck with views of Pyramid Peak and the Crystal Range. Sly Park Reservoir, also known as Jenkinson Lake, is within a few miles of the cabin, offering opportunities for "boating, paddleboarding," fishing, and swimming. Sly Park Creek also has a "swimming hole" and opportunities for gold panning. The cabin grounds themselves include a horseshoe pit and a clothesline. Beyond outdoor activities, Sly Guard Cabin is conveniently located near several popular attractions. "Apple Hill" is a short drive away, providing seasonal delights like orchards, farms, and artisan crafts. The historic mining towns of Coloma and Placerville, as well as numerous local wineries, are also within easy reach, offering cultural excursions and tasting experiences. The Sly Park Environmental Education School is located across the street, offering guided nature walks on the trail adjacent to the cabin, which guests are asked to respect. The cabin is also a suitable spot for an "outdoor-lite experience," providing the comforts of a cabin while still being immersed in nature.
For those interested in renting Sly Guard Cabin, here's some key promotional information and practical advice. The cabin is available for rent year-round. Reservations can be made through the National Recreation Reservation System (Recreation.gov) and typically open 6 months in advance. The fee is generally $65 per night for up to 12 people (four sleeping inside the cabin, with space for an additional eight on the grounds). It is crucial to contact the Placerville Ranger Station at (530) 644-2324 in advance to arrange for check-in, access, and to receive the combination for the gate and cabin key storage lock. Failure to do so may result in cancellation. Check-in is at 2:00 p.m. and check-out is at 11:00 a.m. While the cabin is generally quiet, it's wise to inquire about any current fire restrictions, as "no fires allowed" can be in effect during dry periods. Guests are responsible for bringing their own bedding, toilet paper, personal toiletries, and garbage bags, as it is a "pack it in, pack it out" facility for trash. Pets are not allowed inside the cabin, but outdoor pets are permitted on the grounds (must be cleaned up after). Mice have been a past issue, so thorough cleaning and food storage are vital. This cabin is an excellent choice for a family or small group seeking a unique, relatively inexpensive, and comfortable base for exploring the Eldorado National Forest and its many attractions, offering a memorable blend of outdoor adventure and cozy cabin living.

Sly Guard Cabin Reviews
Nice little cabin close to hiking trails and recreational areas. It has a full kitchen, living room with TV and a DVD player and a bunch of random DVDs. Bathroom is nice and clean with hot and cold water, but don’t plan for long showers because this is an old cabin with outdated equipment. The room has two twin beds and if you’re over 6’ you’d definitely won’t fit in those beds (don’t forget to bring your own sheets). There’s a small “walk-in” closet in the bedroom but enough room for your luggage. You can find a fire ring and a picnic table right outside the cabin. The wall heater didn’t work regardless how hard I tried but there were two electric heater that brought the temperature to an acceptable level. Google map tells you to park your car on the side of the road and walk to the cabin but you should take the dirt road across the fire station and take an immediate left till you see the “sly guard cabin” sign, you’ll see a gate but don’t freak out, just take the bolt out and open the gate and the path will take you to the cabin, just make sure you close the gate behind you.
Jan 12, 2025 · N FtBeautiful scenery. Very quiet & inexpensive cabin within a few miles of the lake. Cabin could be cleaner. Coffee maker was filthy so we didn't use it. Limited silverware in the kitchen. Only 2 spoons in the drawer. Refrigerator needs replacing. It won't even freeze water for ice cubes. Fires restrictions are in effect here so no sitting around the campfire at night. No fires allowed.
Sep 26, 2024 · Joe SmithA great place to stay in the woods, very reasonable.
Feb 28, 2025 · David YoungBeautiful place to camp. Just make sure you book your campsite out a year in advance. Especially if you’re doing it on a weekend.
