Sly Park Campground, situated in the charming community of Pollock Pines, CA, represents an exceptional destination for those searching for a serene and activity-rich outdoor experience. As a prominent feature in the "Camping Near Me" category, this campground provides local users and visitors alike with seamless access to essential services and goods, all while offering a truly immersive natural escape. Nestled within the expansive Sly Park Recreation Area, which surrounds the beautiful Jenkinson Lake, this campground is lauded for its pristine environment, diverse recreational opportunities, and a strong sense of community, often becoming an "annual tradition" for many families.

Environment and Setting

Sly Park Campground is celebrated for its absolutely "amazing," "pristine," and "quiet" natural environment. Located at an elevation of approximately 3,500 feet in the Sierra foothills of El Dorado County, it offers a comfortable climate and a classic camping ambiance. The campground is surrounded by a mix of pine and oak trees, providing ample shade and the desirable scent of pine, which for many, signifies true camping. The centerpiece of the Sly Park Recreation Area is Jenkinson Lake, a 640-surface-acre drinking water reservoir that provides stunning water views and a focal point for numerous activities. The campsites are spread across various loops, some offering immediate lake access and views, while others are tucked away for more privacy. Campers consistently praise the beauty of the area, noting its peaceful atmosphere that encourages relaxation and connection with nature.

Services and Amenities

Sly Park Campground is well-equipped with a comprehensive range of services and amenities designed to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The Eldorado Irrigation District (EID) operates the various campgrounds within Sly Park Recreation Area, boasting a total of 191 campsites across 8 campgrounds. Each individual campsite is outfitted with a picnic table, a fire ring, and a barbecue grill, facilitating outdoor cooking and campfires. Vault toilets and water faucets providing piped drinking water are conveniently located throughout the campgrounds, ensuring basic necessities are met. For those traveling with horses, the Black Oak Equestrian Camp offers individual campsites with corrals and horseshoe pits, alongside nine miles of designated equestrian trails. While many campsites are suitable for tents, sites are also available that can accommodate RVs up to 40 feet in length, though it's advised to check specific site sizes when reserving. There is also a "Sly Park Resort Campground" which offers full hookups (30 amp), wooded sites, bathrooms, and showers, catering to those seeking more amenities. For general camping areas, however, showers and full RV hookups may not be universally available; campers should confirm the amenities for their specific loop. Reviewers have highlighted the presence of helpful camp hosts, with one specifically commending "John" at the Pinecone strip for being "super helpful with an issue I had with my boat trailer." Firewood is typically available for sale on-site, and there are designated garbage disposal areas. While cell service is generally unavailable in the area, which many consider a blessing for a true "disconnect," some service might be found near the entrance kiosk.

Features and Activities

The array of features and activities at Sly Park Campground makes it a versatile destination for all types of outdoor enthusiasts. Jenkinson Lake is the hub of aquatic activities, popular for fishing, water skiing, wakeboarding, sailing, canoeing, and kayaking. The lake is stocked with fish, making it an excellent spot for anglers to create "lifelong memories." Two concrete boat launch ramps are available for convenient access to the lake, and boat rentals are often available seasonally. It's important to note that personal watercraft like Jet Skis are generally not allowed on Jenkinson Lake to protect the drinking water reservoir. Beyond the lake, a robust network of over 9 miles of trails encircles Jenkinson Lake, accommodating hikers, bikers, and equestrians. These trails wind through thick forested areas and open meadows, offering diverse scenery and varying skill levels, from easy strolls to more challenging sections. The park also features scattered day-use/picnic areas with tables and barbecues, perfect for a casual outing. For families, the opportunity to enjoy a campfire under the pine trees is a significant draw, fulfilling the classic camping experience. The campground's dog-friendly policy (with dogs on leash) means the entire family, including pets, can enjoy the outing. Additionally, nearby Sly Park Resort offers a country store, bar and grill, and gas station, providing convenient access to supplies and dining options.

Sly Park Recreation Area and its campgrounds are open year-round, offering flexibility for visits, although the peak season is typically during the warmer months. Individual campsites generally accommodate up to six people, while larger family campsites can host up to twelve. Group areas and an equestrian camp are also available for larger gatherings.
