We camp here every year for family get-togethers. No wifi, but that's the point! The kids are out there riding their bikes, skateboards, running, and just plain having a good time.We do get cell service, so that works out fineBathrooms are a bit outdated, but for the most part, kept clean, and the showers have lots of hot water. Propane fire pits are allowed, but open fires are not, as the risk is high (understandable).Propane and charcoal BBQs allowed, but not provided, gotta bring your own. Some RV spots are a bit on the smaller side, but others do have ample room, follow the guidelines when booking if you have slide-outsWater, power, and drain are also at RV spots, as well as dump station on the way out.Dog friendly!!It is not fancy, but for the price, is more than adequate for our needs, and will continue to be here anually**It would be nice if they built a walkway to the park tho....!!! - Gina

Hidden Valley Lake Campground Introduce

Hidden Valley Lake Campground, situated at 19234 Hidden Valley Rd, Hidden Valley Lake, CA 95467, USA, offers a practical and family-oriented camping experience that resonates well with those searching for "Camping Near Me" in Northern California. Accessible by phone at (707) 987-3138 or +1 707-987-3138, this campground is a consistent choice for many families seeking to disconnect from screens and reconnect with each other and nature.

Environment:

Hidden Valley Lake Campground is located within the private, gated community of Hidden Valley Lake, California. This setting provides a unique blend of a recreational environment with the amenities and security of a residential community. The campground is situated near the shores of Hidden Valley Lake, a picturesque, man-made lake that serves as a central feature for water-based activities. The surrounding landscape features rolling hills, oak trees, and generally dry California vegetation, characteristic of Lake County. While some RV spots might be on the smaller side, others offer "ample room," and the campground provides a "perfect mix of shade and sun," indicating a varied layout to accommodate different preferences.

A key aspect of the environment is the intention for campers to enjoy an "unplugged" experience. As one reviewer noted, "No wifi, but that's the point! The kids are out there riding their bikes, skateboards, running, and just plain having a good time." While there's no Wi-Fi, cell service is generally available, allowing for necessary communication. Due to the high fire risk in California, particularly in this region, open wood fires are not permitted, but propane fire pits and charcoal BBQs are allowed. This policy, though a deviation from traditional campfires, is a responsible measure for safety in a fire-prone area.

However, it is important to address some reported environmental challenges. One review mentioned "overflowing garbage cans," which can detract from the aesthetic and hygiene of the campground. Additionally, "very unlevel spots" for RVs and "pitch black campground with very few working lights" were noted, suggesting areas where maintenance and infrastructure could be improved for a more comfortable and safer experience, especially after dark.

Services and Amenities:

Hidden Valley Lake Campground provides essential services and amenities catering primarily to RV campers, while also being suitable for tent camping. For RV sites, "water, power, and drain are also at RV spots," offering full hookups, which is a significant convenience for many. There is also a "dump station on the way out," further facilitating RV travel. While showers are available, they are described as "a bit outdated," but importantly, are "kept clean" and have "lots of hot water," fulfilling a basic need for campers.

The campground is "dog friendly," which is a huge plus for pet owners, allowing them to bring their furry companions along for family get-togethers. However, general pet etiquette and rules, such as leash requirements and waste disposal, would apply. The staff is consistently described as "nice and helpful," indicating a welcoming atmosphere for guests. While the campground may "not be fancy," its affordability ("for the price, is more than adequate for our needs") makes it an accessible option for regular family trips.

Other general amenities commonly found in such campgrounds might include picnic tables at each site, though the provided information doesn't explicitly state their presence or condition. The allowance of propane and charcoal BBQs, while not provided, offers flexibility for cooking. However, there's no mention of on-site laundry facilities, a camp store, or specific recreational equipment rentals beyond what campers bring themselves.

Features:

A distinctive feature of Hidden Valley Lake Campground is its location within a gated community. This often translates to a sense of enhanced security and a quieter environment compared to public campgrounds. The community itself offers additional amenities that campers can potentially access, such as golf courses, a country club, and various recreational facilities, though direct access might require guest passes or specific arrangements with the community association. The focus on a technology-free camping experience is a deliberate feature, encouraging outdoor play and family bonding over digital distractions.

The campground's suitability for "family get-togethers" is a strong endorsement, highlighting its capacity to host groups and provide an environment where children can freely explore and engage in outdoor activities like biking and skateboarding. The presence of ample hot water in the showers, despite the outdated appearance, is a practical feature that greatly improves comfort. The ability to use propane fire pits, while not a traditional campfire, allows campers to enjoy a fire-like ambiance safely in a high-risk area. The "some RV spots are a bit on the smaller side, but others do have ample room" indicates a variety of site sizes, emphasizing the need for campers to "follow the guidelines when booking if you have slide-outs" to ensure a comfortable fit.

Promotional Information and Local Attractions:

For those searching for "Camping Near Me" and the goods and services associated with a family-friendly outdoor vacation, Hidden Valley Lake Campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the local area and enjoying community amenities. While the campground itself is not "fancy," its value lies in its practical amenities and access to recreational opportunities:

  • Lake Access & Water Activities: Hidden Valley Lake offers opportunities for fishing (with a California fishing license), boating (likely non-motorized or low-horsepower restrictions), and swimming. The lake is generally clean and provides a refreshing escape during warmer months.
  • Golfing: The Hidden Valley Lake community boasts an 18-hole championship golf course, offering a significant recreational draw for golf enthusiasts. Campers might have access to this through community guest policies.
  • Outdoor Play: The campground explicitly promotes children engaging in outdoor activities like biking, skateboarding, and running, making it ideal for active families. While a "walkway to the park" was suggested as an improvement, the availability of a park within the community is a positive.
  • Community Amenities: Beyond the golf course, the Hidden Valley Lake community generally offers a country club, equestrian center, tennis courts, and private beaches. Campers might gain access to some of these facilities as guests, enhancing their stay.
  • Wine Country Proximity: Lake County is part of California's renowned wine country, with numerous wineries and tasting rooms in the surrounding areas. Campers can easily embark on wine-tasting tours and explore local vineyards.
  • Hiking & Nature Exploration: The surrounding Lake County region offers various hiking trails and opportunities for nature observation in parks and open spaces, including nearby Clear Lake State Park and Anderson Marsh State Historic Park.
  • Local Events: The Hidden Valley Lake community often hosts local events and gatherings that campers might be able to participate in, providing a deeper sense of local culture.

Hidden Valley Lake Campground is best suited for families and groups who prioritize affordability, a practical and comfortable camping experience, and a desire to disconnect from technology. While some aspects like uneven sites and lighting could be improved, its clean facilities, hot showers, dog-friendly policy, and access to a variety of recreational opportunities within the Hidden Valley Lake community make it a consistent choice for annual family get-togethers and a reliable option for those looking for a functional and enjoyable "Camping Near Me" destination.
