Hideout Canyon Boat-In Campground

Ashley, UT, USA

4.0
We’ve been coming to this campground for years because of the amazing views and unique boat-in access. This is truly a magical place to camp! Unfortunately this last trip (6/20-6/23) there was no camp host, most campsites had outdated reservation signs and the bathrooms were terrible. The website said to bring all water for cooking cleaning and drinking but the water was running outside the bathroom…We still didnt dare drink it and used the water we hauled in. The 2nd day a pipe under the women’s bathroom sink burst and flooded the area. Toilets were overflowing with waste as well. No camp host came the entire time we were there. We pay a reservation fee for each night we stay but what’s the point if there aren’t any facilities accessible to us? - Libby Kushma

Hideout Canyon Boat-In Campground Introduce

Looking for a truly unique "camping near me" experience in Utah? Hideout Canyon Boat-In Campground, located near Ashley, offers an adventurous and scenic camping opportunity unlike many others. As its name suggests, this campground is primarily accessed by boat, providing a secluded and distinctive way to enjoy the beauty of the lake and its surroundings. For those seeking a more remote and water-centric camping adventure, Hideout Canyon presents an intriguing option. However, it is crucial to consider recent feedback from visitors regarding the campground's facilities and management.

Embrace Amazing Lake Views and Unique Boat-In Access: Hideout Canyon Campground's most significant draw, according to long-time visitors, is its "amazing views" of the lake and its "unique boat-in access." This feature sets it apart from traditional campgrounds and offers a sense of escape and immersion in nature that is hard to replicate. The necessity of arriving by boat likely contributes to a more secluded and less crowded atmosphere, enhancing the feeling of a true getaway. The surrounding environment near Ashley, Utah, is known for its stunning landscapes, and campers can anticipate beautiful vistas of the lake, potentially framed by canyons or forested areas. The boat-in access also opens up opportunities for various water-based activities, such as swimming, fishing, and exploring the lake by boat. The "magical place to camp" description from a returning visitor speaks volumes about the inherent appeal of this location and the unique experience it offers.

Recent Concerns Regarding Services and Facilities: While the natural setting and boat-in access remain significant attractions, recent reviews paint a concerning picture regarding the services and facilities at Hideout Canyon Campground. Multiple visitors in the 2021 season reported the absence of a camp host during their stays (June, July, and August). The lack of on-site management can lead to several issues, as highlighted in the reviews. One recurring problem was the state of the bathrooms. Visitors described them as "terrible," with complaints ranging from overflowing toilets with waste to a lack of toilet paper and a general lack of cleanliness. One review even mentioned a burst pipe under the women's bathroom sink that flooded the area. These conditions raise serious concerns about hygiene and the usability of essential facilities.

Another issue reported was the discrepancy regarding water availability. The website apparently advised campers to bring all water for cooking, cleaning, and drinking. However, a visitor noted that water was running outside the bathroom, although they did not dare to drink it and relied on the water they had brought. Later in the season, another visitor reported that the bathrooms were locked with a sign indicating they would open on Tuesday, but even when a staff member appeared, they stated there was "no water," despite the presence of an outside tap. These inconsistencies and the apparent lack of reliable water access are significant drawbacks for campers.

Furthermore, there were complaints about "outdated reservation signs" at most campsites, indicating a lack of upkeep and potentially causing confusion among arriving campers. The combination of no camp host, poorly maintained or inaccessible bathrooms, and unreliable information creates a negative experience, especially considering that a "reservation fee" is charged for each night's stay. As one frustrated visitor pointed out, the value of paying a reservation fee is questionable if the basic facilities are not accessible or in usable condition.

Features and What to Potentially Expect (with Caveats): Based on the campground type and the positive aspects mentioned by a long-term visitor, we can infer some of the features that Hideout Canyon Boat-In Campground likely offers, although their current condition and availability are subject to the concerns raised in the reviews:

  • Individual Campsites: Designated areas for setting up tents or small camping setups, accessible by boat.
  • Potential for Fire Pits and Picnic Tables: While not explicitly mentioned in the negative reviews, these are common amenities in campgrounds. Their presence and condition would need to be verified.
  • Outhouse-style Bathrooms: The reviews mention outhouses, which are basic non-flush toilet facilities. While toilet paper was provided at times, cleanliness and functionality appear to be major issues.
  • Lake Access: Direct access to the lake for boating, swimming, and fishing is a primary feature due to the boat-in nature of the campground.
  • Scenic Views: As highlighted by a returning visitor, the campground likely offers beautiful views of the surrounding lake and landscape.

Given the recent negative feedback, potential visitors should be aware that the expected level of service and the condition of the facilities may not meet typical campground standards. It is crucial to seek the most current information before making a reservation.

Lack of Promotional Information and Need for Improvement: The provided information does not include any promotional offers. Given the recent negative reviews, it would be prudent for the management of Hideout Canyon Boat-In Campground to address the reported issues and potentially offer assurances or updates to regain the trust of potential visitors. Any promotional efforts should focus on acknowledging and rectifying the concerns raised about the lack of a camp host and the poor condition of the facilities. Highlighting the unique boat-in access and the stunning lake views could still be part of the promotion, but transparency regarding the current state of services is essential.

Contact Information and Recommendations: If you are considering a visit to Hideout Canyon Boat-In Campground, it is strongly recommended to contact the managing authority directly for the most current information on the status of the facilities, water access, and whether a camp host is currently on-site. Use the following contact information:

Phone: (801) 226-3564

Mobile Phone: +1 801-226-3564

Address: Ashley, UT, USA

When calling, be sure to ask specific questions about the availability and condition of bathrooms, water sources, and the presence of a camp host. Inquire about any recent improvements or planned maintenance. Given the recent negative experiences reported, it would be wise to have a clear understanding of the current situation before committing to a reservation and traveling to this boat-in campground. Consider bringing extra water and being prepared for potentially primitive conditions.

In conclusion, Hideout Canyon Boat-In Campground offers a unique and potentially magical camping experience with its boat-in access and amazing lake views near Ashley, Utah. However, recent feedback indicates significant concerns regarding the lack of a camp host and the poor condition of essential facilities like bathrooms and water access. Potential visitors should exercise caution and seek current information directly from the campground management before planning a trip. While the location holds considerable appeal, the quality of the experience may currently be compromised due to the reported issues.
