I would have given Hueston Woods 5 stars but the bathrooms on Memorial Day weekend were rarely cleaned and restocked. This state park is so nice though. There is so much to do between kayaking, hiking, biking, and running. My wife and I like to do things when we go camping and this state park has it all!We stayed on the older side of the campground and since our camper is less than 22’ we were able to pull it into our site (D035) easily even though it was a bit hilly. We walked through the newer side (A & B loops) which is mostly pull-through sites and also has quite a few full hook-up sites. It has more level sites and is very nice. Both sides have nice playgrounds and a good amount of trees. The bathrooms have plenty of toilets and shower stalls to accommodate holiday weekends when there are more people. However, this weekend was a disaster. You can see in the last two pictures how bad the bathhouse was in the D section and it was that way from Saturday until at least Monday afternoon. We let the state park staff know on Sunday and they did not seem to be too concerned or want to do anything about it. There was only one functioning toilet due to the other ones being clogged (no picture).I have been camping my whole life and have never seen a state park where the staff let a bathhouse get that bad on a holiday weekend. That is when you do your best to keep things clean because you have more visitors and you want to give a good impression. I hope they get this fixed for the next holiday weekend. - Todd Porter

When local users search for "camping near me," the availability of activities and the overall environment are often top priorities. Hueston Woods State Park seems to excel in the former. One enthusiastic camper mentioned, "There is so much to do between kayaking, hiking, biking, and running," highlighting the park's appeal for those who like to stay active while camping. The presence of a lake or other water bodies likely supports kayaking, adding to the recreational options.

The campground itself has different sections. The "older side" accommodated a camper with a less than 22’ camper, which was "easy to pull... in easily even though it was a bit hilly." This suggests that some sites on the older side might be sloped but accessible for smaller campers. In contrast, the "newer side (A & B loops)" is described as having "mostly pull-through sites" and "quite a few full hook-up sites." These newer loops are also noted for being "more level" and "very nice," which could be preferable for larger RVs or those who desire more level ground.

Both the older and newer sides of the campground have "nice playgrounds" and "a good amount of trees," indicating that families with children and those who appreciate shade will find these features appealing.

Services and Amenities:

Visitor reviews provide mixed feedback on the services and amenities. Regarding restrooms, one reviewer noted that the "bathrooms have plenty of toilets and shower stalls to accommodate holiday weekends." However, this same reviewer experienced a significant issue during Memorial Day weekend, stating that the bathrooms were "rarely cleaned and restocked" and were in a state of "disaster" in the D section for an extended period, with clogged toilets and a lack of maintenance despite informing the staff. This is a critical point to consider regarding the upkeep of facilities, especially during peak times.

Another reviewer mentioned that "All the full hook-ups were launched up on blocks and wood," which might indicate challenges with the terrain or the installation of these hookups.

On a positive note, one reviewer specifically praised the "camp host," describing them as "great and super helpful," even delivering blocks, wood, and stone to help level a site. This suggests that while the park staff's response to bathroom issues was lacking for one visitor, the camp host provided excellent service.

To summarize the known services and amenities:

  • Older camping loop (e.g., D) with some hilly sites.
  • Newer camping loops (A & B) with mostly level, pull-through sites.
  • "Quite a few" full hook-up sites in the newer loops.
  • Playgrounds in both older and newer sections.
  • Restrooms with toilets and showers (cleanliness issues reported).
  • Potentially challenging site leveling in some areas.
  • Helpful camp host.

However, potential downsides mentioned by reviewers include the slope of some campsites, the reported lack of bathroom maintenance during a holiday weekend, unmowed grass, and issues with bugs.

Despite these criticisms, the overall impression is that the park itself is "so nice" with "so much to do," suggesting that the natural beauty and recreational opportunities are significant draws.
