Indian Reserve Campground Introduce
Looking for a rustic "camping near me" experience along a beautiful river in Michigan? Indian Reserve Campground, located at 2C9R+GC, Wilson Township, MI 49707, USA, offers a basic, nature-focused camping option. Based on customer reviews, this campground presents a mixed picture of natural beauty and the need for some self-sufficiency. Let's delve into what local users can expect from a stay at Indian Reserve Campground.
Location:
Situated in Wilson Township, Michigan, Indian Reserve Campground benefits from its riverside location. The reviews highlight its proximity to the river, with roughly half of the ten sites being directly on the riverfront. It's also noted as being near Alpena, just about ten minutes outside of town, making it a relatively accessible rustic camping option for those in the Alpena area. The natural surroundings likely feature the typical forests and riverine landscapes of northern Michigan.
Environment and Ambiance:
The environment of Indian Reserve Campground is clearly centered around the river, which is described as "really beautiful." The presence of riverfront campsites allows for direct access and scenic views. The campground is characterized as "very very basic" and "rustic," suggesting a more primitive camping experience without extensive amenities. One review mentions surrounding forest vegetation that provides privacy for a handful of the ten sites, while others are more open. This variability in site layout can cater to different preferences among campers.
However, the reviews also point out some drawbacks regarding maintenance. One camper noted that the campground "has not been taken very well care of" over the years and advised others to "expect to clean up your own campsite." This suggests that while the natural setting is appealing, the upkeep might be lacking. The presence of pit toilets that "aren't in the best of shape" further underscores the rustic and potentially under-maintained nature of the facilities. Campers should be prepared for a more self-reliant experience in terms of cleanliness and amenities.
The proximity to the river also brings typical outdoor considerations such as mosquitoes during humid times and the need to watch for ticks in the spring. Additionally, logging activity a few years prior has reportedly made the sound of Indian Reserve Road more noticeable. While not described as "bad," it's a factor to be aware of for those seeking complete natural silence.
Despite these issues, the underlying natural beauty of the area and the allure of riverside camping seem to be significant draws for those looking for a more basic outdoor experience near Alpena.
Services and Amenities:
Given its description as a "very very basic rustic campground," the services and amenities at Indian Reserve Campground are likely minimal:
- Ten Campsites: The campground is small, with only ten sites available.
- Riverfront Access: Roughly half of the sites are directly on the river, offering easy access for fishing, launching kayaks, or simply enjoying the view.
- Pit Toilets: Basic pit toilet facilities are available, though their condition has been noted as less than ideal.
- Hand Pump for Potable Water: A hand pump is available and reportedly works year-round, providing potable water that one reviewer noted had a slight sulfur taste.
- Fire Pits: While not explicitly detailed, it's common for rustic campgrounds to have fire pits at each site. One reviewer mentioned what they had to clean up near a fire pit, implying their presence.
- Kayak/Canoe Launch: The campground provides a launch point for kayaks and canoes, making it appealing for those who enjoy paddling on the river.
The reviews do not mention amenities like showers, electrical hookups, or a camp host. It's safe to assume that this is a truly rustic experience focused on the natural environment.
Features and Highlights:
Despite the noted maintenance issues, Indian Reserve Campground has several features that might appeal to local users looking for "camping near me":
- Riverside Camping: The prime feature is the opportunity to camp directly on the river, offering scenic views and easy access to water activities.
- Kayaking and Canoeing: The presence of a launch makes it convenient for paddling on the "beautiful" river.
- Rustic Experience: For those who prefer a more traditional and less developed camping setting, this campground fits the bill.
- Privacy on Some Sites: A handful of the ten sites offer ample spacing and privacy due to the surrounding forest vegetation.
- Proximity to Alpena: Its location just ten minutes outside of Alpena makes it a convenient natural escape for residents and visitors of the town.
- Suitability for Different Camping Styles: While described as rustic tent camping, at least some sites can accommodate trailer campers or small RVs.
Promotional Information:
There is no explicit promotional information in the provided reviews. However, the recurring mentions of the "beautiful" river and the availability of riverfront campsites serve as inherent selling points. For local users searching for "camping near me" who value direct access to a river for activities like kayaking, canoeing, and fishing, Indian Reserve Campground offers this unique feature. The rustic nature of the campground might also appeal to those seeking a more traditional and less commercialized outdoor experience.
However, potential campers should also be aware of the need for self-sufficiency regarding cleanliness and the basic nature of the facilities. The slightly higher cost mentioned by one reviewer, in light of the maintenance, is also something to consider. Despite these points, for those who prioritize a riverside location and are prepared for a basic, rustic setup, Indian Reserve Campground could be a worthwhile option, especially given its proximity to Alpena and the availability of river access.
Local users interested in camping here should be prepared for a more primitive experience and might want to bring cleaning supplies for their campsite. The opportunity to camp right by the river and enjoy paddling could outweigh some of the maintenance concerns for those seeking this type of natural immersion near Wilson Township and Alpena.

Indian Reserve Campground Reviews
This is a very very basic rustic campground on the river. Sadly, over the years, this has not been taken very well care of. So expect to clean up your own campsite (I won't even say what we had to clean up near the fire pit). It is a beautiful area, the cost to camp here is high considering it's not maintained well. Some of the sites are really nice and big. It has pit toilets, that again, aren't in the best of shape. This could be an amazing campground with a bit of care. In the spring watch for ticks. When it's humid, lots of mosquito's being this close to the river. A few years back the select cut trees near here, so you do hear Indian Reserve road more now then you used to, but it's not bad. I don't know what the rule for generators are here, but we do run them during the day sometimes, but we try not to run them at night (unless we are the only ones there). You can put a kayak or canoe in at the launch and the river here really is beautiful. I just wish it was better cared for.

The campground would also work with trailer campers or small RVs in at least some of its sites.
