Jerktail Landing Campground Introduce
For local users in the Eminence, Missouri, area and those seeking a more rustic and potentially free "camping near me" experience, Jerktail Landing Campground, located near Eminence, MO 65466, USA, offers a riverside setting with recent renovations. Based on customer reviews spanning from 2023 to April 2025, this campground presents a mix of natural beauty, seclusion, and evolving amenities. If you're looking for a campground with direct river access and are prepared for a potentially rugged approach and a pack-in/pack-out ethos, Jerktail Landing might be worth considering for your next local outdoor adventure.
The Environment: Beautiful Seclusion with Direct River Access
Jerktail Landing Campground is consistently described as a "beautiful, beautiful place" by those who have visited. Its key environmental feature is its direct access to a clear and not-too-deep river, likely the Current River, a well-known scenic waterway in the Missouri Ozarks. One reviewer noted an "extremely short walk to the river" from their campsite and enjoyed a gravel bank with solitude. This proximity to the river offers opportunities for swimming, wading, and enjoying the natural beauty of the Ozark waterways. The initial description from a 2023 review highlighted the seclusion and privacy of the location, contributing to a sense of being immersed in nature.
However, more recent reviews indicate changes to this environment. Renovations in April 2023 involved the removal of "lots of trees and bushes" to make way for three gravel parking pads, three lantern posts, and three fire pits. This development, while adding more defined camping spaces, has resulted in a less remote feel and closer proximity to other campers. Despite these changes, the fundamental beauty of the riverside location likely remains a significant draw. Local users seeking "camping near me" with immediate access to a clear Ozark river will still find this a compelling aspect of Jerktail Landing.
Services and Amenities: Evolving from Primitive to Basic Developed
Based on the customer reviews, the services and amenities at Jerktail Landing Campground have evolved over time. Initial descriptions point towards a more primitive camping experience:
- Vault Toilet: A vault toilet is mentioned, though one reviewer in April 2025 noted it "has not been pumped in a long time," indicating potentially poor maintenance of this facility.
- "Scan and Pay" Camping: As of a 2025 review, camping operates on a "scan and pay" system, suggesting there is a fee associated with camping, contradicting an earlier statement of being "FREE!!" This inconsistency needs to be considered by potential visitors.
- Pack In/Pack Out: The ethos of "PACK IN/PACK OUT!!" remains consistent, emphasizing that campers are responsible for removing all their trash, helping to maintain the natural cleanliness of the area.
The renovations in April 2023 introduced some basic developed amenities:
- Gravel Parking Pads: Three gravel parking pads were added, providing more defined and potentially more stable parking for campers.
- Lantern Posts: The addition of three lantern posts suggests designated campsite areas with some form of lighting infrastructure (though campers would likely still need to bring their own lanterns).
- Fire Pits: Three fire pits were installed, providing designated and safer areas for campfires.
It's important for local users considering Jerktail Landing for "camping near me" to be aware of this transition from a potentially free and primitive site to one with basic developed amenities and a likely fee. The maintenance of the vault toilet is a significant concern raised in a recent review. Campers should be prepared for a more rustic experience than at fully developed campgrounds, even with the recent additions.
Features and Considerations for Camping at Jerktail Landing
Jerktail Landing Campground offers a unique set of features and important considerations for local campers:
- Direct Access to the Current River: This remains a primary draw, offering easy access for swimming, wading, and enjoying the river.
- Seclusion (Potentially Reduced): While the renovations have lessened the feeling of remoteness, the campground is still accessed via a 7-mile gravel road, which can deter some and contribute to a quieter atmosphere compared to roadside campgrounds.
- Free Camping (Potentially No Longer Accurate): Older reviews mention free camping, but a recent review indicates a "scan and pay" system, suggesting a fee is now in place. This needs verification.
- Gravel Road Access: The 7-mile gravel road leading to the campground is a significant factor. One reviewer in April 2025 advised exploring it first with a 4x4 and no trailer due to washouts. Another reviewer in a Saturn SUV reported no problems in the past. Road conditions can vary, especially after wet weather, so caution and potentially a higher-clearance vehicle are advisable.
- Pack In/Pack Out Policy: Campers must be self-sufficient in managing their waste.
- Potential for Weather Impact: One reviewer recounted being informed by the US Park Service about severe weather and experiencing three days of rain, highlighting the need to be prepared for changing weather conditions in the Ozarks.
- Ongoing Renovations: The 2023 review indicates ongoing renovations, so the state of the campground and its amenities may continue to evolve. Checking recent information or contacting the provided phone number is recommended.
Local users looking for "camping near me" should carefully weigh these features and considerations. The beauty and river access are significant positives, but the potentially challenging road, the state of the vault toilet, the pack-in/pack-out requirement, and the evolving nature of the campground need to be taken into account.
Promotional Information and How to Plan Your Visit to Jerktail Landing Campground
There is no explicit promotional information in the provided reviews. The primary "promotion" is the repeated mention of the beautiful location and the direct river access. However, the contrasting experiences and the indication of a move towards a fee-based system suggest that the campground is in a transitional phase.
To plan your visit to Jerktail Landing Campground, local users should take the following steps:
- Call the Provided Phone Number: Contact (573) 323-4236 or +1 573-323-4236 to get the most up-to-date information on the campground's status (is it open?), fees (confirm the "scan and pay" system and any associated costs), and current road conditions.
- Inquire About Amenities: Ask about the current state of the vault toilet and any other available amenities.
- Assess Your Vehicle: Consider the 7-mile gravel road and the potential for washouts. A higher-clearance vehicle, and possibly 4x4, might be advisable, especially after rain. If towing a trailer, exercise extreme caution and potentially scout the road beforehand without the trailer.
- Prepare for Primitive Camping: Even with the added amenities, be prepared for a more rustic experience. Bring all necessary camping gear, including water, food, and waste disposal bags.
- Check Weather Forecasts: Be aware of potential severe weather in the region and pack accordingly.
- Be Prepared for Insects: One reviewer mentioned "horrible" flies, so insect repellent is highly recommended, especially during warmer months.
- Look for Recent Online Updates: Search online for recent reviews or information about Jerktail Landing Campground to get the latest insights from other campers.
Local users seeking "camping near me" with a focus on natural beauty and river access might find Jerktail Landing appealing. However, it's crucial to be well-informed about the access road, the current state of amenities, and the likely need for self-sufficiency. Contacting the campground directly is the best way to get the most accurate and current information before planning your trip.
In conclusion, Jerktail Landing Campground near Eminence, MO, offers a potentially beautiful riverside "camping near me" experience with direct access to the Current River. While recent renovations have added some basic amenities, the access via a 7-mile gravel road, the reported condition of the vault toilet, and the pack-in/pack-out policy suggest a more rustic camping style. The shift towards a "scan and pay" system indicates that free camping may no longer be available. Local users should contact the campground directly for the latest information on conditions, fees, and accessibility before planning their visit to this evolving riverside location.

Jerktail Landing Campground Reviews
April 2025, I stumbled across this. The road in is 7 miles of gravel, and washed out in a couple of places. Explore first with 4x4 and no trailer, it may or may not be accessible. There is no gate, and the vault toilet has not been pumped in a long time. When I got home and found the web page it says it is closed to repair damage from flooding. There were no gates, not indications of closure on my visit. Camping is scan and pay.
Apr 25, 2025 · James JenkinsBeautiful, beautiful place. FREE!! PACK IN/PACK OUT!! I enjoyed the seclusion and privacy. Extremely short walk to the river from my camp. The river is clear and not too deep. Gravel bank to the river, was only myself on. The flies are very horrible. I drove my Saturn SUV. No problems on the 7 mile gravel road. US Park Service personally came to inform me about severe weather coming in. Rained for 3 days. Other than that I WILL RETURN SOON!!Update: It's April 9th-12th, 2023, I finally returned to find lots of renovations to the campground. They have removed lots of trees and bushes for 3 gravel parking pads, 3 lantern post, and 3 fire pits.😩... Not so remote now. Don't get me wrong , it's still a great place to camp, but now your closer to other campers. We had the campground to ourselves for 3 days then a few people showed up to hike. These are current ( no pun intended) pictures of Jerktail Landing. If you would like to see the before campground renovations check out my YouTube channel under Jerktail Landing.
Apr 12, 2023 · Trina “Crystal”Great spot, it’s secluded with a huge gravel bar to set up campers. Gravel is soft, definitely need front wheel or 4 wheel drive. Nice swimming and fishing holes.
Aug 15, 2018 · Noha LightBeautiful river, but maybe the water is compromised. There are only 3 campsites, two of which were taken by trailers that no one was occupying...so really only one campsite available. The rocky beach was nice. The water is cold from a spring and a beautiful color. The campsite is off the beaten path, very nice! No playground. One pit toilet. Dogs should stay on leash. Campsite has a fire pit and a picnic table.
Aug 01, 2024 · Patty BrightGreat float on the Current River to two rivers anytime of the year. These were taken February 2023.
