When local users consider "camping near me," the environment and scenery of the campsite often play a significant role in their decision. According to a customer review, Kelsey Short Youth Camp features "great views of the lake" from all three camping areas, resulting in "beautiful sunrises/sunsets." This suggests that the campground is situated in a picturesque location overlooking a lake, providing a visually appealing and potentially tranquil environment for campers. The presence of a lake also opens up possibilities for water-related activities, although these are not explicitly mentioned in the reviews.
A reviewer who visited from Minnesota for an event called "Lilies War" noted that the site was "well maintained" and "comfortable," indicating a positive experience with the upkeep of the camping areas. This suggests that local users can expect a level of care in the groundskeeping, contributing to a more enjoyable stay. However, this reviewer also mentioned that the showers (not on the RV side) were "a bit rough" but had a new water heater providing warm water. This provides a mixed view of the shower facilities, with cleanliness not explicitly addressed but the availability of warm water being a positive aspect.
Another key environmental factor mentioned is the presence of bugs. The reviewer noted being "eaten alive" by bugs during their stay, which they stated was "not typical of the area." This highlights the importance of being prepared for insects, especially during certain times of the year in Missouri. While this might have been an unusual occurrence, local users should be aware of the potential for insects and take necessary precautions such as bringing insect repellent.
Based on the available reviews, we can infer some of the services and features of Kelsey Short Youth Camp:
- Campsites: The existence of three camping areas suggests multiple options for setting up tents or RVs. One review distinguishes between showers "not on the RV side," implying that RV sites might have different or additional amenities.
- Shower Facilities: Showers are available, although one review indicates that the non-RV showers might be basic but offer warm water. The quality of RV-side showers is not detailed.
- Lake Views: A significant feature is the great views of the lake from all camping areas, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the campground.
- Maintenance: The campground appears to be generally well-maintained, contributing to a comfortable camping experience.
- Event Hosting: The reference to "Lilies War" indicates that the campground can accommodate large events, which might be a relevant feature for local groups or organizations seeking a venue for gatherings that include camping.
The name "Kelsey Short Youth Camp" suggests that the primary purpose might be for youth-oriented camping activities. However, the reviews indicate that it also accommodates other visitors, especially those attending events. This "special-use" aspect might influence the availability of the campground to the general public at all times. Local users interested in camping here outside of organized events should inquire about availability and any specific regulations for non-youth groups or individual campers.
The environment surrounding Kelsey Short Youth Camp in Smithville, MO, is characterized by its proximity to a lake, which offers scenic views and potential recreational opportunities. Smithville Lake is a significant feature of the area, known for boating, fishing, and other water-based activities. While the reviews don't explicitly mention direct access to these activities from the campground, the presence of lake views suggests that the lake is a prominent part of the landscape and likely accessible nearby. The natural surroundings would likely include the typical Missouri vegetation, providing a pleasant outdoor setting.
Currently, no specific promotional information is available for Kelsey Short Youth Camp based on the provided data. Given its potential focus on youth groups and event hosting, pricing and availability might vary. Local users interested in camping here should contact the campground directly using the provided phone numbers to inquire about rates, reservation policies, and any potential discounts for local residents or groups. If the campground regularly hosts events open to the public (like the "Lilies War" mentioned), this could be a unique feature and a reason for local users to visit, combining camping with participation in these events.
In conclusion, Kelsey Short Youth Camp near Smithville, MO, offers a camping experience with well-maintained sites and beautiful lake views. While primarily intended for youth camping, it also accommodates other visitors, particularly those attending events. Local users searching for "camping near me" can expect a comfortable stay with scenic surroundings, although they should be prepared for potential insect activity and note that shower facilities (non-RV side) might be basic. Kelsey Short Youth Camp Reviews
I came here from MN for Lilies War with my dad and boyfriend. We all had a great time. The site is well maintained and, ignoring all the bonuses from the event, it was comfortable and seemed to be taken care of. The showers were a bit rough (not on the RV side), but they must've gotten a new water heater because I never got truly cold water. Make sure you wear sun screen and watch for bugs. I was eaten alive this year, which isn't typical of the area. Come check out the war next year for all the amazing things I'm not mentioning here.Photos are of our camp and my elbow covered in bites after one night (between 4 and 7 bites)
Jun 18, 2024 · Ellie J.Great camping site! All three areas have great views of the lake, which results in beautiful sunrises/sunsets.
Oct 10, 2021 · Mike RobertExcellent location for group camping. We stayed in Area 3. Beautiful and spacious fire pit, lots of picnic tables & a pond close by. There is a grill plate attached to the fire pit and there is a small stand alone grill like what you'd see at other park areas.Bathroom situation is pretty decent and very clean. 👍🏻Def would recommend any youth group for this experience together.
Oct 02, 2022 · Gretchen Leigh WillsonGreat place and well maintained but not enough bathroom facilities for really large groups. Not much electricity for handicapped either. So would be 5 star for a small group not needing those.
Aug 15, 2019 · Sarah CurnuttGreat private place for groups to swim and camp
