Little Sand Bay Campground

34155 State Hwy 13, Bayfield, WI 54814, USA

4.0
Nice location, not too far from the sea caves, and not to far from Bayfield/orchards. Electric, nice big beach area, Apostle Islands visitor center right down the road. The toilets area was really nice (as it seems to be part of the NP) but showers house area was gross. $2 for a 4 min shower dingy and full of cobwebs & spiders (it was hot water tho!). So everything was great minus the showers which need a good clean if not an update. - Mark & Natalie Malinowski

Little Sand Bay Campground Introduce

Seeking a "camping near me" experience that places you at the heart of the Apostle Islands region's natural beauty and attractions? Little Sand Bay Campground, located at 34155 State Hwy 13, Bayfield, WI 54814, offers a compelling option for those looking to explore this stunning area. You can reach them at (715) 779-5233 or their mobile number +1 715-779-5233 for inquiries and reservations.

Little Sand Bay Campground boasts a desirable location, making it a convenient base for exploring several key attractions. It is noted to be not too far from the fascinating sea caves, a major draw for visitors to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Additionally, its proximity to the charming town of Bayfield and local orchards provides opportunities for exploring local culture and enjoying fresh produce. The campground's location offers a blend of natural beauty and accessibility to regional points of interest.

One of the significant features of Little Sand Bay Campground is its access to a "nice big beach area." This provides campers with a wonderful space for relaxation, recreation, and enjoying the lakefront. The presence of a beach enhances the camping experience, offering opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, and simply enjoying the scenic views. Furthermore, for those interested in learning more about the area, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore visitor center is conveniently located "right down the road" from the campground. This offers an excellent resource for information, maps, and insights into the natural and cultural history of the Apostle Islands.

In terms of facilities, the campground receives mixed reviews. The toilet area is described as "really nice," with one reviewer noting that it appears to be part of the National Park system, suggesting a higher standard of maintenance and cleanliness. This is a significant positive aspect for campers who value clean and well-maintained restroom facilities.

However, the shower house is an area of concern raised by a visitor. It is described as "gross," "dingy," and "full of cobwebs & spiders." Despite these cleanliness issues, the reviewer did note that the water was hot. The showers operate on a pay system, costing $2 for a 4-minute shower. This feedback indicates a need for significant improvement in the cleanliness and potentially the upkeep of the shower facilities. For campers who prioritize clean showering options, this could be a major drawback.

Little Sand Bay is particularly popular among those looking to explore the Apostle Islands by water. It is mentioned that "most people stay there to kayak out to the Apostle Islands or do some form of boating." The campground also features a "protected breakwater to dock," which is a valuable amenity for boaters and kayakers, providing a safe harbor for their vessels. This strong connection to water-based activities positions Little Sand Bay Campground as an ideal choice for those planning to explore the islands via the lake.

Regarding the campsites themselves, a reviewer noted that "the campsites are very close together and do not have any privacy." This is an important consideration for campers who value seclusion and space between sites. The lack of privacy might be a trade-off for the prime lakefront location and access to water activities. Additionally, while "most sites have a view of the lake," it is mentioned that the "tent camp area" specifically may not offer these views. This suggests that the layout of the campground might have different sections with varying degrees of lake visibility.

One positive amenity mentioned is the availability of electric hookups at some campsites. This is a significant convenience for RVs and campers who rely on electricity for appliances or charging devices. However, the extent of electric hookups (i.e., the number of sites offering them) is not specified in the reviews.

Based on the limited information, there are no specific mentions of promotional offers or other unique features of Little Sand Bay Campground. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of all available amenities, campsite options, pricing structures (beyond the shower cost), and any specific rules or regulations, it would be advisable to contact the campground directly.

In summary, Little Sand Bay Campground offers a compelling location for those wishing to explore the Apostle Islands region, particularly the sea caves and the islands themselves via kayaking or boating. Its proximity to Bayfield and the Apostle Islands visitor center adds to its appeal. The presence of a nice beach area and electric hookups are further advantages. However, potential campers should be aware of the reported issues with the cleanliness of the shower facilities and the lack of privacy between campsites. The "nice" toilet area is a positive aspect. For "camping near me" in the Bayfield area with a focus on lake access and exploration of the Apostle Islands, Little Sand Bay Campground is a location to consider, but it would be prudent to weigh the pros and cons based on individual preferences for campsite privacy and shower cleanliness.
