Point Detour Campground Introduce
Looking for "camping near me" near the scenic Bayfield, Wisconsin area? Consider Point Detour Campground, located at 95995 Point Detour Rd, Bayfield, WI 54814, USA. This campground offers a unique experience with its proximity to Lake Superior. You can reach them at (800) 226-8478 or +1 800-226-8478 for inquiries.
The environment of Point Detour Campground is characterized by its close access to the shores of Lake Superior. One visitor, arriving at the end of the Trans Wisconsin Adventure Trail, found it a "welcome place to cool off." While the lakefront is described as having "a lot of rocks and not beach," it still allows for some interaction with the water, such as wading and splashing. Access to the lakefront involves "a bit of a downhill climb," but a helpful rope is in place to ensure safety. This suggests a natural, somewhat rugged shoreline rather than a sandy beach, which might appeal to those who enjoy a more natural and less developed waterfront.
The campsites at Point Detour Campground are noted to be "very close to Lake Superior," offering potentially beautiful lake views and easy access to the shoreline. The overall atmosphere of the campground is described as respectful, with most campers adhering to appropriate quiet hours even though there are "no posted rules." This indicates a self-regulated and considerate camping community. One reviewer mentioned having cell service at their campsite, which can be a plus for those who wish to stay connected.
In terms of services and facilities, Point Detour Campground offers a more rustic camping experience. The only restroom facility mentioned is an "outhouse only central to campsites," so campers should be prepared for this type of amenity. Firewood is not sold directly at the campground but can be purchased in nearby towns such as Bayfield and Herbster. This highlights the campground's more natural and less developed nature, encouraging visitors to source some of their needs locally.
Swimming access directly from the campground is not recommended due to the rocky shoreline. One reviewer humorously noted that swimming in Lake Superior in August was "ice cold" and "took my breath away," suggesting that even during warmer months, the lake's temperature can be quite frigid. This reinforces that while the campground offers lakefront access, it may not be ideal for traditional swimming.
The campsites themselves "seem well maintained," indicating that while the amenities might be basic, the camping areas are kept in good condition. The location is described as not being near large cities, suggesting a more remote and peaceful setting, ideal for those looking to escape urban areas.
To summarize the features of Point Detour Campground:
- Campsites very close to Lake Superior with lakefront access.
- A rocky shoreline, not suitable for swimming.
- A respectful camping environment with generally quiet campers.
- Cell service available at some campsites.
- Outhouse restrooms centrally located.
- Firewood available for purchase in nearby towns.
- Well-maintained campsites.
- A more remote location, away from large cities.
- A downhill path to the lakefront with a safety rope.
Promotional information is limited in the reviews, but the emphasis on the great location near Lake Superior and the respectful camping atmosphere can be seen as positive selling points. The mention of its location at the end of the Trans Wisconsin Adventure Trail might also appeal to those undertaking that journey.
For local users searching for "camping near me" who appreciate a more natural, lakefront camping experience on Lake Superior without the expectation of swimming, Point Detour Campground could be a great fit. The proximity to the lake, the quiet and respectful atmosphere, and the well-maintained campsites are attractive features. However, potential visitors should be prepared for rustic amenities like outhouses and the need to source firewood externally.
To get more details about the types of campsites available, any specific regulations, and other amenities (if any), it is advisable to contact Point Detour Campground directly at (800) 226-8478 or +1 800-226-8478. They can provide you with all the necessary information to plan your lakeside camping trip.
In conclusion, Point Detour Campground offers a unique camping experience right on the shores of Lake Superior near Bayfield, WI. Its scenic lakefront access, while not ideal for swimming due to the rocky terrain, provides a beautiful setting for those looking to be close to the water. The campground is noted for its respectful campers and well-maintained sites, albeit with rustic amenities. If you are seeking a more natural and tranquil "camping near me" experience on the shores of Lake Superior, Point Detour Campground is worth considering.

Point Detour Campground Reviews
This was at the end of the trans Wisconsin adventure trail and was a welcome place to cool off. There’s a lot of rocks and not beach so I wouldn’t swim here but was able to get my feet in the water and splash my face. There’s a bit of a downhill climb to the lakefront but there’s a rope to hang onto so it felt safe! Thanks to whoever put that rope in place.
Aug 02, 2023 · Melanie HausenGreat campground. No posted rules but most campers are respectful of noise and appropriate quiet hours. I had service at our campsite. The campsites are very close to Lake Superior. No swimming access, which is not disappointing considering we went swimming in the Lake in August and it took my breath away, ice cold! Outhouse only central to campsites. Wood can be bought in nearby towns: Bayfield, Herbster, etc. No large cities nearby. Campsites seem well maintained.

Apr 29, 2024 · Rebecca PagelEnjoyed our stay here! Soothed the breaking of waves on the boulders down the cliff side.Basic campground with no water access on site, so bring your own. Outhouse as facilities. Fire pits at the site, were able to buy local firewood down the street. Pay for the site at the casino. We will definitely return!!
