Low Gap Campground

190 Low Gap Rd, Helen, GA 30552, USA

4.0
We loved this campground and definitely will be returning! We were there the first weekend of Oktoberfest, and the weather was perfect. Not all of the campsites had people at it, which was a pleasant surprise being that it’s Helen’s busiest weekend of the year. I don’t recall any camper trailers, just tents, which I enjoyed, as trailers tend to bring with them extra noise and harsh lights. It was along low gap creek, which was really nice to listen to at night. The sites were a bit spaced out from each other (~50 ft from each other) but we were still near others, so keep in mind you are not secluded. The bathrooms are toilet only, no flushing, and we couldn’t figure out how to use the water, though others seemed to figure it out. Dog friendly. You do have a fairly large area to put up a tent, rather than a tiny space like some other campgrounds.*With Google Maps, the location was really hard to find. We drove an extra 40 minutes through the forest because maps told us to turn right at the “Low Gap Campground” sign, but you are supposed to turn LEFT. - Abigail Ballard

Low Gap Campground Introduce

Are you searching for a serene "camping near me" experience in the picturesque region near Helen, Georgia? Low Gap Campground, located at 190 Low Gap Rd, Helen, GA 30552, USA, offers a tranquil setting ideal for tent campers and those with small campers or pop-ups. Situated along the soothing Low Gap Creek, this reservation-only campground provides a more natural and less crowded camping environment, particularly appealing to those seeking a quieter alternative to larger RV-centric campgrounds.

Environment: Creek Side Tranquility in a Wooded Setting

Low Gap Campground is nestled alongside Low Gap Creek, offering the pleasant sound of flowing water as a natural soundtrack to your camping experience. One visitor specifically mentioned enjoying the creek's presence at night. The campground appears to be located in a wooded area, providing shade and a natural ambiance. Notably, during the first weekend of Oktoberfest, Helen's busiest time of year, a visitor was pleasantly surprised to find that not all campsites were occupied, suggesting a potentially less congested atmosphere compared to other campgrounds in the area during peak seasons.

A unique aspect highlighted by a reviewer was the prevalence of tent camping over camper trailers. This resulted in a quieter environment with fewer "harsh lights" often associated with larger RVs. For those who prefer a more traditional tent camping experience and seek a quieter atmosphere, this could be a significant advantage of Low Gap Campground.

While the campsites are described as being "a bit spaced out from each other (~50 ft apart)," it's important to note that you will still be near other campers, so complete seclusion is not guaranteed. This spacing, however, does offer more room per campsite compared to some more tightly packed campgrounds, with one reviewer noting a "fairly large area to put up a tent" rather than a tiny designated space.

Services and Amenities: Back-to-Basics Camping

It is crucial to understand that Low Gap Campground offers a more primitive camping experience with limited services and amenities. As explicitly stated in a review, "There is no power or water to the sites." This means campers must be entirely self-sufficient in terms of electricity and water supply. Be prepared to bring your own power sources (e.g., batteries, solar chargers) and an adequate supply of water for drinking, cooking, and washing.

The restroom facilities are described as "toilet only, no flushing." This indicates the presence of non-flush toilets, such as pit toilets or composting toilets. Campers should be prepared for this type of basic sanitation and bring their own hand sanitizer and any other personal hygiene items they may need.

One visitor mentioned difficulty figuring out how to use the water, while noting that others seemed to have managed. This suggests that there might be a water source available, but its operation might not be immediately obvious or it might be a communal source with a specific procedure for use. It is essential to inquire about the availability and operation of any water sources when making a reservation or upon arrival, if possible.

The campground is noted as "dog friendly," which is a significant feature for campers who travel with their canine companions. However, it is important to be a responsible pet owner, keep your dog leashed, and clean up after them to ensure a pleasant experience for all campers.

Given the limited amenities, Low Gap Campground is best suited for campers who are comfortable with a more rustic experience and come prepared with all necessary supplies.

Features: Creek Side Location, Spacious Tent Sites, and Quieter Atmosphere

The primary features of Low Gap Campground include its picturesque location along Low Gap Creek, the relatively spacious tent camping areas, and the generally quieter atmosphere, particularly due to the apparent focus on tent and small camper camping rather than large RVs.

The sound of the creek provides a natural and soothing backdrop for relaxation. The larger campsite areas offer more flexibility in setting up tents and gear compared to campgrounds with smaller, more defined spaces.

The reservation-only policy, as mentioned in one review ("Reservation ONLY"), suggests that the campground aims to manage occupancy and potentially maintain a more controlled and less crowded environment. It is imperative to make reservations in advance to secure a campsite.

The absence of power and water hookups contributes to the primitive nature of the camping experience and might appeal to those looking to disconnect from modern conveniences and immerse themselves more fully in nature.

Important Note on Location Finding: One crucial piece of information from a review is that the Google Maps location can be misleading. The reviewer recounts driving an extra 40 minutes through the forest due to incorrect directions provided by Google Maps based on the "Low Gap Campground" sign. They explicitly advise that you need to turn LEFT at the sign, contrary to what Google Maps indicated at the time of their visit. This is vital information for local users planning to visit the campground; be aware of potential inaccuracies in online mapping services and consider using alternative navigation methods or contacting the campground directly for precise directions.

Promotional Information and Booking Details

The provided information does not include any specific promotional offers. To inquire about pricing, availability, and to make reservations, you should contact Low Gap Campground directly at (706) 754-6221 or +1 706-754-6221. Given the "Reservation ONLY" policy, it is essential to call ahead to secure a campsite and to inquire about any specific rules or regulations.

When calling to make a reservation, be prepared to provide the following information:

  • Your desired arrival and departure dates.
  • The type of camping you will be doing (tent, small camper/pop-up).
  • The number of people in your party.
  • If you are bringing a dog.
  • Any specific questions you have about the campground's amenities or location.

Due to the potential inaccuracy of online maps, it might be beneficial to ask for detailed directions when making your reservation.
