Luoma's Surfers Paradise Camping Attn: Sue Rose Introduce
Welcome to Luoma's Surfers Paradise Camping Attn: Sue Rose, situated at 5649 Lake Rd W, Ashtabula, Ohio (OH 44004), United States. For local users exploring the "camping near me" category, Luoma's Surfers Paradise presents a distinctive option, offering a location with an "awesome view over the see" (presumably Lake Erie) and very friendly staff and owners. However, based on customer reviews, potential campers should be aware that the camping experience here might deviate from traditional campground expectations, particularly regarding site setup and included amenities.
Environment:
The campground boasts a "wonderful place with awesome view over the see," indicating a prime location with scenic vistas of Lake Erie. The proximity to the lake suggests potential for water-related activities and enjoyment of the waterfront environment. The town of Ashtabula is described as "very beautiful," and Luoma's beach area offers water access, enhancing the appeal of the location. However, one review notes that the immediate area might not be ideal for dog walks due to the speed of the road in front of the property and the lack of sidewalks in the neighborhood. Despite this, the presence of wildlife, as implied by the name "Surfers Paradise" (suggesting an outdoor-oriented environment), could add to the natural charm of the area. It's important to balance the positive aspects of the lake view and access with the practical considerations of the immediate surroundings.
Services and Amenities:
Based on the detailed customer review, the services and amenities at Luoma's Surfers Paradise Camping appear to be quite basic, with some potentially unexpected arrangements and charges:
- Tent Camping in Potentially Unconventional Areas: One reviewer initially paid $35 to pitch a tent in the "boat trailer parking area of a mobile home parks next to their dumpster and the fish cleaning station." This suggests that designated tent camping spots might be limited, and alternative areas might be used.
- One Designated Tent Camping Spot (Potentially for an Extra Fee): The reviewer mentions being offered a single "actual tent camping spot for an extra $5," indicating that a more traditional campsite might be available but at an additional cost.
- Payment for Hot Showers: Unlike many campgrounds where showers are included, Luoma's Surfers Paradise charges extra for hot showers. The reviewer had to forgo a shower due to not having the required coins.
- Clean and Well-Stocked Toilets (Free): A positive aspect highlighted is that the toilets are clean and well-maintained and are available for free.
- Pet-Friendly (with Potential Considerations): Pets are allowed, as the reviewer brought their dog. However, it's noted that the dog barked at people backing up boat trailers nearby, and the neighborhood might not be ideal for dog walks.
- Mail and Package Reception (Implied): The fact that the reviewer mentioned the proximity to a mobile home park suggests a level of permanence for some residents, potentially including mail and package reception, although this wasn't directly experienced by the short-term camper.
The review explicitly mentions the absence of certain expected amenities, such as included hot showers and potentially well-defined tent camping areas. The focus seems to be on providing a basic space for camping with access to the lake, rather than a full-service campground experience.
Features and Suitability:
Luoma's Surfers Paradise Camping has several unique features and might be particularly suitable for certain types of campers:
- Awesome Lake Views: The primary draw appears to be the stunning views of Lake Erie, offering a picturesque camping backdrop.
- Friendly Staff and Owners: Multiple reviews praise the friendliness of the staff and owners, suggesting a welcoming and helpful personal interaction.
- Proximity to Lake Erie and Luoma's Beach Area: Direct or very close access to the lake and a local beach area provides opportunities for water-related activities and enjoying the waterfront.
- Pet-Friendly: Campers who travel with pets are welcome. However, they should be mindful of the road safety and potential interactions with other campground activities (like boat trailer maneuvering).
- Acceptance of Basic Camping Needs: For campers who prioritize location and basic amenities over a full-service campground, Luoma's might be a viable option, provided they are prepared for the potential unconventional setup and extra costs.
- Interesting Local Insights from Owners: The reviewer enjoyed hearing about the old farm and the area from the owner, suggesting a personal touch and local knowledge that might enhance the stay for those interested in the history and surroundings.
However, potential campers should also consider the less conventional aspects:
- Potentially Undesirable Tent Site Location: Being placed in a boat trailer parking area near dumpsters and a fish cleaning station might not appeal to all campers.
- Extra Charges for Hot Showers: The additional cost for a basic amenity like a hot shower is a significant factor to consider for budget-conscious travelers.
- Potential Noise and Activity: The proximity to boat trailer parking could mean occasional noise and activity related to boat launching and retrieval. The reviewer also mentioned a garbage truck.
- Limited Dog Walking Area: The lack of sidewalks and the speed of the road might make it challenging for dog owners to walk their pets safely in the immediate vicinity.

For those who prioritize the lake view and friendly service and are adaptable to a less traditional camping environment, Luoma's could be an interesting option within the "camping near me" category. Wonderful place with awesome view over the seeVery friendly staffs!
Jul 04, 2022 · Daniel KurthVery friendly owners I thought nothing about handing over $35 to pitch a tent in the boat trailer parking area of a mobile home parks next to their dumpster and the fish cleaning station the night before trash pick up day. I was offered the one and only actual tent camping spot for an extra $5. I hadn't really budgeted for the premium package. I also accepted the fact i would have to pay for a hot shower in the morning. Some folks may not like people backing a boat trailer a few feet away from their tent but I don't mind if they don't mind my dog barking at them. Even a garbage truck beeping in reverse for a few minutes as dumpster gets dumped didn't bother me there was a bass boat protecting my tent and my dog loves barking at beeping trucks . My dog apparently appreciated the stirring of scents more than me, but it is the dogs vacation too.Having rising early that morning not particularly hungry anymore or motivated to grill until the aromas settled down some. I decided a hot shower sounded like a little slice of paradise, but had forgotten I had to pay for water until I had undressed and didn't bring coins. But the toilets are clean and well stocked and it's free! I really enjoyed that part of my morning the best so far so we decided to get going while everything was still funny.I have camped near many dumpsters and this is maybe my second favorite. San Diego has much better park dumpsters for free. The town is very beautiful Luoma's beach area has water access. It isn't the most dog fun area do to the speed of the road in front of the house and no sidewalks in the neighborhood.Would I recommend camping here for the $35 package? I like to tell my friends and family about that night so...I don't know. Super nice lady and the dude told me all about the old farm and how everything looked and I enjoyed that so maybe if they remembered me they would tell me more about the area some more.
Nov 03, 2022 · Bob HardingI would like to have been able to give this local business a better mark, but I cannot. We stayed for the holiday weekend, with my mother-in-law having booked site 18, more than 2 months prior. We arrived to find another rig set up in that site. After trying to place us into other permanent sites, which later had their owners return, we ended up sharing the site with the other group. Our squatters were very nice folks, and we made the best of it, but we paid full-price, the owners made sure of that, and were not apologetic for their clear error. We should have left, but had driven 12 hours to be together with family before school started. We basically avoided camp, just using it to sleep. The spot was beautiful, as the pictures from another reviewer last year, show, but the service was not good, and the stinky bathrooms/showers kept me on the prowl for public restrooms when we were in town. Its a shame, with the setting, this place could be a gold mine, but currently, its a ghost-town.
Sep 06, 2017 · Don KirbyWas there a couple of weeks ago. Could not have asked for a better site right on the lake everyone there was friendly both staff and residents . A nice little private beach that was clean the campgrounds it self was clean and quiet. Looking forward to returning before the end of the season.
