Look no further than Meadow Creek Campground, located off Unnamed Road in Meadow Bridge, WV 25976, USA. Based on recent customer reviews, this campground appears to be a hidden gem offering a unique and cost-effective way to enjoy the natural beauty of West Virginia. You can reach them at (304) 465-0508 or +1 304-465-0508 for any inquiries, though it's worth noting that this is a free, first-come, first-served campground.
Environment and Ambiance:
Meadow Creek Campground is described by visitors as being "off the beaten path," suggesting a more secluded and natural setting. A significant feature highlighted in the reviews is the presence of a "rushing river" adjacent to the grounds. This offers the potential for swimming (at your own discretion) and a source of non-potable water. The sound of the river likely contributes to the natural ambiance of the campground. Interestingly, train tracks run alongside the grounds, and while trains do pass through (including during the night), one reviewer noted that during a severe thunderstorm, the noise of the storm overshadowed the train sounds. However, another reviewer strongly advises bringing earplugs due to the noise of the trains, especially the horns at a nearby crossing. Despite the occasional train noise, the overall environment seems to be appreciated for its natural beauty and the presence of the river.
Services and Amenities:
For a free campground, Meadow Creek seems to offer a commendable set of basic amenities, as mentioned by the reviewers:
- Vaulted Bathrooms: The presence of "clean locker toilets" is explicitly noted, which is a significant convenience for a free camping area.
- Fire Rings and BBQs: Each campsite is equipped with both a fire ring and a BBQ grill, making it easy to cook and enjoy campfires.
- Picnic Tables: Reviewers mention well-maintained sites with picnic tables, providing a dedicated space for meals and other activities.
- River Access: The campground boasts direct access to the Meadow Creek river, offering opportunities for swimming and enjoying the water.
It is important to note one crucial piece of information: there is no firewood to scavenge on-site. Therefore, you will need to bring your own firewood if you plan to use the fire rings or BBQs. Also, while one review mentions that RV camping is technically not allowed, they observed that this rule doesn't seem to be heavily enforced. However, if you are planning to camp in an RV, it would be wise to confirm the current regulations by contacting the provided phone numbers.
Features and Activities:
The primary features and potential activities at Meadow Creek Campground revolve around its natural setting and the provided amenities:
- River Activities: Swimming and enjoying the riverside environment are definite draws.
- Campfires and Grilling: The provided fire rings and BBQs enhance the camping experience for cooking and gathering.
- Hiking: One reviewer mentioned taking a walk next to the train tracks. While not a designated hiking trail within the campground itself, it suggests opportunities for exploration in the vicinity. The general area of Meadow Bridge, WV, likely offers further outdoor recreational possibilities.
- Free Camping: A significant feature is that it's a free campground, making it an incredibly budget-friendly option for local campers.
The first-come, first-served nature of the campground is also a key characteristic. This means you don't typically make reservations but instead arrive and choose an available site. While this can be convenient, it also means that availability isn't guaranteed, especially during peak seasons or weekends.
Promotional Information and Why Choose Meadow Creek Campground:
While there aren't specific promotions mentioned, the most significant draw of Meadow Creek Campground for local users searching "camping near me" is that it's a free campground offering a range of valuable amenities. Here's why you might consider it:

- Basic Amenities Provided: Benefit from vaulted bathrooms, fire rings, BBQs, and picnic tables at no cost.
- Secluded Feel: Being "off the beaten path" suggests a quieter and more natural camping experience.
However, potential visitors should also be aware of the train noise, as highlighted by a reviewer, and come prepared with earplugs. Additionally, remember to bring your own firewood. Despite these considerations, the positive reviews emphasize it as a "fantastic spot" and a "great hidden gem," especially for those looking for a free and naturally appealing camping option close to home.

Meadow Creek Campground Reviews
Another one of America’s great hidden gem free campgrounds. Off the beaten path, this spot has vaulted bathrooms, fire rings and BBQs at each site, and a bonus rushing river you could swim in if you wanted or collect non-potable water from. We went for a walk next to the train tracks that run alongside the grounds. 2 trains came thru during the night. They may have been loud, but we couldn’t hear anything over the torrential lightning and rain storm we encountered. It was wet, windy, and quite fun to sleep in (dry thankfully).
Apr 17, 2025 · Zach FrankSince camping is first come first serve in the park I can't really complain about ending up here, especially since it's free. That said BRING EARPLUGS. The trains are extremely loud, and since there's a crossing they'll be blaring their horns at all hours of the night.Otherwise a fantastic spot with river access, clean locker toilets, well maintained sites, and grills, picnic tables, and fire pits at all the sites.Do be aware there is NO firewood to scavenge on site so you'll need to pick some up before setting up camp.RV camping is not allowed but it seems they don't patrol that very heavily.
Oct 12, 2023 · Jarred GilletteLoved this campground especially since it’s free!Warning: the train is super loud and passes a couple times throughout the night.Whoever used campsite 1 before us left a bunch of beers and cigarette butts in the fireplace which was frustrating. We cleaned up some of the trash but didn’t have enough room to take it all.
May 19, 2023 · Nicole AdamsI like to stay at this campground while visiting New River Gorge national Park and preserve. No electric or water but has vaulted toilets. Lots of trains pass by day & night but I'm not bothered by the noise. Not a lot of shade either.
Apr 12, 2023 · Travels With DogThis is a wonderful campground especially considering it’s price: free! Location is great for when you’re visiting the nearby new river gorge National Park and the surrounding areas. There’s decent cell service with Verizon data. Each site has a fire grill and a picnic table. They’re decently spaced out with no foliage in between so little privacy in that aspect. There was no bathroom or water access when we were there the very beginning of April. There was a dumpster that campers were using. Beautiful hills around. Pet friendly. The main downside is that there’s a train super close to the sites, a coal carrying one that goes by 3 or 4 times a day. Very scary for young children/pets. One of my pictures shows just how close it is from the site we stayed in for two nights. All in all super grateful for the access to so much free camping in this area! Would return.
