Middle Waddell Campground Introduce
Welcome to Middle Waddell Campground, situated on Waddell Creek Rd SW, Olympia, WA 98512, USA. For local users searching for 'camping near me' in the Olympia area, Middle Waddell Campground offers a unique experience within the Olympic National Forest. Managed by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (as indicated by one reviewer mentioning management by the WA State Department of National Forest, which likely refers to the state's management within the National Forest), this campground presents a blend of accessibility and a feeling of being deep within nature. Let's delve into what you can expect based on the available customer reviews.
For those looking for 'camping near me' that combines the tranquility of the forest with some recreational activities, Middle Waddell Campground appears to offer just that. One reviewer highlights its location "just on the outskirts of town," yet it provides a sensation of being "a million miles away deep in the forest, with wildlife to boot." This suggests an environment where you can easily escape the urban hustle and immerse yourself in nature without venturing too far from Olympia. The presence of wildlife further enhances the natural appeal of this location for camping enthusiasts.
However, it's important to note the specific conditions and features mentioned in another review. This camper points out that the campground offers a free stay for up to 7 days within a 365-day period, which is a significant benefit for budget-conscious campers looking for 'camping near me'. However, the facilities are basic, with "pit toilet only" and "no trash receptacles," meaning campers must practice a "pack out what you bring in" approach. This emphasizes the need for self-sufficiency and Leave No Trace camping ethics at Middle Waddell Campground.
The same reviewer also mentions that the "hiking trail is shared with ATV's, quads, and dirt bikes." This is a crucial piece of information for those planning to use the trails. If you are looking for a quiet, pedestrian-only hiking experience, the shared use with motorized vehicles might be a consideration. On the other hand, if you or someone in your group enjoys off-road vehicle activities, this could be a significant advantage of choosing Middle Waddell Campground for 'camping near me'.
A more concerning aspect raised in one of the reviews is the "constant gun fire from wherever the front folks go to target practice... generally, 10 am till dusk." This suggests that the peacefulness of the natural environment might be intermittently disrupted by the sound of target practice. For campers seeking absolute tranquility during the day, this could be a notable drawback. However, for others, it might be less of an issue.
Considering these points, Middle Waddell Campground offers a unique set of characteristics for those seeking 'camping near me' in the Olympia area:
- Location: Situated on the outskirts of Olympia, providing a feeling of remoteness while still being relatively close to town.
- Environment: Located within the Olympic National Forest, offering a natural setting with wildlife.
- Cost: Free camping is available for up to 7 days per year.
- Facilities: Basic, with pit toilets and no trash service (pack it out).
- Activities: Hiking trails are present but shared with ATVs, quads, and dirt bikes.
- Potential Drawbacks: Possible noise from nearby target practice during the day.
For local users looking for 'camping near me' that offers a free option and access to trails where off-road vehicles are permitted, Middle Waddell Campground could be a good fit. The natural forest setting and potential for wildlife viewing are also appealing. However, it's essential to be prepared for the lack of amenities like trash disposal and to be aware of the shared trail use and potential noise from target practice.
If you are primarily looking for a secluded and quiet natural camping experience focused solely on hiking, you might want to consider other options for 'camping near me' that do not have shared-use trails or reported noise issues. However, if the combination of free camping, forest immersion, and access to ATV trails appeals to you, Middle Waddell Campground is worth considering.

In conclusion, Middle Waddell Campground near Olympia offers a free camping opportunity within the Olympic National Forest, characterized by a seemingly remote feel despite its proximity to town and the presence of wildlife. The hiking trails are shared with motorized off-road vehicles, and campers should be prepared for pit toilets only and a pack-it-out trash policy. Nov 05, 2019 · Sandy GreveBeing just on the outskirts of town. Yet feels like your a million miles away deep in the forest. With wildlife to boot. A very pleasant camp host as well. We will be back next season!
Oct 07, 2020 · JaymeVery fun place to camp, especially if you have atv's. Great creek and hiking. Great fun for the kids.
Aug 25, 2022 · Jaime RogersGreat campground for riding the trails in Capitol Forest. Some campsites are huge, others are small. Need to get there early. I didn't care much for the people that set up a small tent on some of the bigger site early in the week as a way to reserve it for the weekend. I wish there was a way around that, but overall, we enjoyed it.
Jun 20, 2021 · Alan SniderThis is a great family camping area. We enjoy riding bicycles and our quad. Actually very quiet and secluded.
