For local users seeking a well-equipped "camping near me" experience, the Newberry / I-26 / Sumter NF KOA Journey, located at 567 Fairview Church Rd, Kinards, SC 29355, USA, offers a range of amenities and a generally positive atmosphere, as indicated by customer reviews. You can contact them at (864) 697-1214 or +1 864-697-1214 for more information and reservations. This KOA Journey campground appears to be a convenient stop for travelers along I-26 and a destination for local families looking for a fun outdoor getaway.
As part of the well-known KOA network, this campground likely provides a certain standard of services and features that many "camping near me" seekers appreciate. Several reviewers highlighted positive aspects of their stays. One family reported having a "great time," praising the "excellent" staff and the clean, well-maintained grounds. They particularly enjoyed the gnome scavenger hunt, which they found fun and challenging (with hints available at the office), and the gem mining activity, which the kids loved. The family also appreciated simply walking around and enjoying the shade and weather, noting it as "one of the most dog friendly parks!" This suggests a welcoming environment for pet owners looking for "camping near me."
Another reviewer expressed anticipation for a return visit when the pool opens and when the pond is stocked with fish, indicating that these are features offered at the campground and are expected to enhance the camping experience. This suggests that the Newberry / I-26 / Sumter NF KOA Journey aims to provide recreational activities for its guests.
However, not all feedback was entirely positive. One guest mentioned a discrepancy regarding pet fees, stating they were unaware of a $25 per day charge for three dogs, which resulted in an unexpected $75 charge after checkout. This highlights the importance for local users to inquire about all potential fees upfront when booking their "camping near me" stay. The same reviewer also pointed out the distance to the nearest supermarket (a minimum of 15 minutes away), advising guests to bring their own food.
Regarding the environment, this reviewer noted significant noise from Highway 26 and the road along the KOA. They were thankful for having a TV, implying that there might not be a plethora of natural attractions or on-site activities to keep one occupied otherwise. The initial impression upon arriving was also mentioned, with concerns raised about the road leading into the campground and a home across the street making the reviewer feel "a little uneasy," advising others to keep their belongings locked up. The area before entering the campgrounds was described as "very depressed," which might influence the overall perception of the location for some local users.
Despite these concerns about the surroundings and fees, the same reviewer did acknowledge that the "campgrounds are very clean," echoing the sentiment of another guest. They also gave credit to a staff member named Ricky for diligently cleaning the sites. This suggests that while the external environment might not be ideal for everyone, the internal upkeep of the campground itself is a priority.
Based on these reviews, the Newberry / I-26 / Sumter NF KOA Journey offers a mixed experience. On the positive side, it boasts excellent and friendly staff, clean and well-maintained grounds, fun activities like a gnome scavenger hunt and gem mining, and a dog-friendly policy. It also has amenities such as a pool and a pond (with future fishing). On the other hand, potential drawbacks include noise from the nearby highway, the distance to a supermarket, and the initial impression of the surrounding area. Additionally, it's crucial for local users to be aware of and clarify all potential charges, such as pet fees, at the time of booking.
For local users looking for a KOA experience within the "camping near me" category, this campground provides a structured environment with certain recreational activities. Families with children and pet owners might find it particularly appealing due to the gem mining, scavenger hunt, and dog-friendly policies. However, those seeking a more secluded and naturally quiet setting might be less inclined due to the highway noise and the described surrounding area.
To get the most accurate and up-to-date information, including details about amenities, pricing, pet policies, and any current promotions, local users are strongly encouraged to contact the Newberry / I-26 / Sumter NF KOA Journey directly at (864) 697-1214 or +1 864-697-1214. In conclusion, the Newberry / I-26 / Sumter NF KOA Journey offers a KOA experience with clean facilities, engaging activities for families, and a welcoming attitude towards dogs. While there are some considerations regarding noise, the surrounding area, and potential extra fees, the positive feedback about the staff and the cleanliness of the grounds suggests a comfortable and enjoyable stay for many local campers. Newberry / I-26 / Sumter NF KOA Journey Reviews
Had a great time with my family when camping here at the Kinards KOA. The staff was excellent, the grounds were clean and well maintained. The gnome scavenger hunt was fun but challenging (office will give you hints). The kids loved the gem mining and we had a blast just walking around and enjoying the shade and weather. One of the most dog friendly parks! Will be back when the pool opens and again when the pond has fish. Already looking forward to it!
Apr 12, 2025 · Robin ASusie was wonderful at check-in but I was not aware of a $75 charge that would be charged to my card after I checked out yesterday. I had three dogs and I was not told that there’s an additional $25 a day for your dogs, I would’ve liked to know that upfront when I checked in and paid everything in full Bring your own food because this closest supermarket is a minimum of 15 minutes away. There’s a lot of noise from Highway 26 and the road along the KOA thankful for the TV otherwise not much to do to keep you busy. The road coming into the campground is very scary as for what you will see when you’re pulling in and a home across the street made me feel a little uneasy. Make sure you keep everything locked up. It’s a very depressed area before you enter the campgrounds. same goes to where the supermarket is!! campgrounds are very clean. This is the closest I could find to my destination that’s why we chose this And credit to a gentleman named Ricky that works there I watched him diligently clean everything in the site
Mar 26, 2025 · Chrissy PelellaThis is a review for a KOA camp ground: This is a lovely, small campground just off the Interstate, making it a peaceful place to stay. The owners are putting in a lot of effort to improve the place, with exciting new ideas. Family friendly with $$ rates.
Mar 05, 2025 · Frank WattsThis is probably my second favorite KOA so far. We were only able to stay one night this trip but we will be back. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The campground was extremely clean and welcoming. They even have a treasure hunt to find garden gnomes throughout the grounds inviting you to explore. The store was large with tons of good stuff. I highly recommend checking this place out. The owners really enjoy what they do and it shows in the property and conversation we had with them. Very nice. Keep up the good work.
Nov 28, 2024 · Strive For HappinessThis was our 3rd time staying at this campground. The staff is wonderful-friendly, helpful and very accommodating. The campground is beautifully maintained and has everything you need. Would highly recommend staying here.
