The campsites are set within this wooded environment, offering a sense of tranquility and immersion in nature. The campground's proximity to Big East Lake is a significant environmental feature, providing opportunities for lakeside activities and scenic walks. The presence of a paved trail around Big East Lake further enhances the accessibility and enjoyment of the natural surroundings. Each campsite is equipped with essential features such as a fire pit for campfires and cooking, and a picnic table for convenient outdoor dining. The layout of the campground includes different loops with varying reservation policies. Loop A operates on a first-come, first-served basis, offering flexibility for spontaneous trips. In contrast, Loops B and C allow for advance reservations, providing peace of mind, especially during peak seasons. Check-in time is at 3:00 PM, and check-out is at 12:00 PM. While specific promotional information for Payson Lakes Campground isn't detailed in the provided reviews, the positive feedback regarding the enjoyable camping experience and the beautiful location serves as a strong implicit endorsement. The fact that many visitors had a lot of fun and appreciated the shade and campsite amenities suggests a positive value proposition for those seeking a "camping near me" getaway. The ability to reserve campsites in Loops B and C in advance offers a degree of convenience and planning security that can be particularly appealing. The mention of nearby attractions like the Grotto and the Nebo Scenic Byway further enhances the campground's appeal as a basecamp for exploring the wider region.
One aspect to consider, based on a review, is that some campsites are quite close to each other. While one visitor was fortunate that adjacent sites were unoccupied, this suggests that during busier times, campers might experience less privacy. Potential visitors who value seclusion might want to inquire about campsite spacing when making reservations or arrive early to secure a more isolated first-come, first-served spot in Loop A, if available. Another point of feedback was regarding parking at the reservoir, which reportedly experienced overcrowding and some disorganization. This issue seemed to be localized to the reservoir area and not the campground itself, but it's something to be aware of for those planning to utilize lake access.
For local users searching for "camping near me," Payson Lakes Campground stands out due to its scenic environment with mature pine trees and ample shade, well-maintained basic amenities like picnic tables and fire pits, and convenient access to both a lake with a paved walking trail and numerous hiking opportunities along the Nebo Scenic Byway. The option to reserve campsites in advance for some loops adds to the planning convenience. While awareness of potential campsite proximity during peak times and the occasional presence of wandering cows might be helpful, the overall positive experiences shared by campers highlight the campground's appeal as a local outdoor escape.
The availability of both first-come, first-served and reservable campsites caters to different planning styles. The clean vault toilets and the presence of water spigots at these facilities contribute to a more comfortable camping experience. The proximity to flushing toilets at Big East Lake, even without readily available soap and water, offers an additional convenience. The clear directions to the paved trail around the lake indicate good signage within the campground. The enthusiastic recommendations for nearby hikes like the Grotto, Bennie Creek, and the Summit Trail underscore the rich opportunities for outdoor exploration easily accessible from the campground.
In conclusion, Payson Lakes Campground offers a beautiful and well-regarded option for "camping near me" in the vicinity of Salem, Utah. Its shaded campsites, proximity to Big East Lake and the Nebo Scenic Byway, and access to hiking trails make it an ideal destination for families, couples, and individuals seeking a refreshing mountain getaway. While some minor considerations like campsite spacing during busy periods and potential for wildlife encounters exist, the overwhelmingly positive feedback from campers emphasizes the enjoyable and memorable experiences to be had at Payson Lakes Campground. The combination of natural beauty, essential amenities, and recreational opportunities makes it a compelling choice for local outdoor enthusiasts.

Payson Lakes Campground Reviews
We had a lot of fun staying at this campground! We stayed in campsite B10 that had lots of shade, and the picnic table was close to the parking spot which was nice. All of Loop A is first come first serve, and Loop B and C can be reserved in advance. Check in was at 3 and check out was at 12. A lot of the campsites were really close to each other so we were lucky that no one reserved the ones next to us. The vault bathrooms were really clean and easy to find, and there was a water spigot at each one. There are flushing toilets at the Big East lake, but no soap or water. The only unnerving thing was the cows that walked through our campground, but they seemed not to mind us. We enjoyed walking on the paved trail around the Big East Lake, there are direction signs that show you how to get there. There are tons of fun hikes nearby on the Nebo Scenic byway, we really enjoyed the Grotto, Bennie Creek, and the Summit Trail!
Aug 09, 2024 · Kimberly StoryBeautiful campground with large pine trees. Lots of shade making for a perfect place to cool off. Sites have a fire pit and a table. We set up a couple tents and had room to stretch out (loop B). Only downside was the reservoir ran out of parking and the camp attendants were struggling to find order. Things could have been handled better but all in all we had a fun time.
Jun 23, 2024 · Bryan TincherAbsolutely beautiful lakes and mountains covered in pines and other vegetation. The bathrooms are very clean and the experience overall was a delight. Many people seen in the lake paddle boarding and kayaking. Only complaint is the algae meant we couldn’t actually swim in the water.
Jul 24, 2024 · Lizzy JessopWe just wrapped up camping at Payson Lakes Campground and it was such a fantastic trip. The campgrounds were clean, quiet, and well maintained. The camp workers Shellie, Brian, Dirk, and Wendy were all amazing, informative, and professional.Cleanest vault restrooms I've ever come across. It is in bear territory so plan accordingly. Apparently there was a sighting the week prior to our trip but he failed to make an appearance while we were there - I wanted to pet that dawg! (Only joking, bears and other wildlife should be left alone. Just because they are friend shaped doesn't mean they are friendly).
Jun 13, 2024 · Kyle MccannThe campsites are too close to each other and are very small. The website it looks a lot more private. We could hear everything. I would have had more privacy in my back yard. Never would go back to stay the night. We saw leeches in the lake so I couldn't bring myself to swim. On the plus side people were quiet after 10 PM.
