Picture Lake Campground Introduce
For local users in the Petersburg, Virginia area exploring "camping near me," Picture Lake Campground, located at 7818 Boydton Plank Rd, Petersburg, VA 23803, USA, presents a location with certain advantages but also some notable drawbacks based on recent customer reviews. This introduction aims to provide an objective overview to help local campers make informed decisions.
One positive aspect highlighted in the reviews is the campground's potentially convenient location. It is described as being in a "good location" for an "overnight stay." Furthermore, its proximity to the "very close Va motorsports arena" suggests that it could be a suitable option for local users attending events at this venue. Additionally, the mention of a "public access lake and pool" indicates potential recreational opportunities, although one reviewer noted that these were "closed due to season" during their visit. For local users interested in these specific nearby attractions, Picture Lake Campground's location could be a significant draw.
However, several concerns have been raised by recent visitors regarding the overall condition and maintenance of the campground. One reviewer noted that the "Park itself appears to have MANY full timers who are not concerned with aesthetics" and expressed a need for a "litter control plan." This suggests potential issues with the visual appeal and cleanliness of the common areas, which is an important consideration for local campers seeking a pleasant environment.
More significant concerns were raised regarding the cleanliness and condition of the bathhouse facilities. One long-time camper described the bathhouses as "filthy," with "old and terribly stained" showers and concerns about the shower handles being unstable. This reviewer also reported having to clean the shower before use, including removing cigarette butts from soap shelves and drains. The absence of basic amenities like hooks for towels and bath bags, coupled with a lack of privacy, led this visitor to have a very negative experience. Such feedback is crucial for local users who prioritize clean and functional restroom facilities when choosing a "camping near me" location.
The condition of the individual campsites also received negative feedback. One reviewer described their site as being "only 2 foot from the road," potentially leading to noise and a lack of privacy. Additionally, this site was located "directly in front of our camper" to a "huge speed bump," causing vehicles to stop frequently, which could be disruptive. The same reviewer also noted that "most of the campers were permanent, and they were VERY unkept," further contributing to the aesthetic concerns. The grassy area of the site was described as "only big enough to sit 3 or 4 chairs," and the picnic table was reportedly "practically falling apart." These details suggest that some campsites may be small, poorly maintained, and lack a comfortable outdoor space for campers.
Based on the overwhelmingly negative experience of one reviewer, they could find "absolutely no positive thing" to say about Picture Lake Campground and indicated an intention to try a different local option, "Camptown Campground," on their next visit. This strong negative sentiment should be carefully considered by local users exploring "camping near me" and weighing their options.
In terms of services and features, the information available is limited and somewhat contradictory. While the presence of a "public access lake and pool" is mentioned, their seasonal closure limits their immediate appeal. The cleanliness and maintenance of the bathhouses appear to be significant issues. The high number of "full timers" might suggest a strong sense of community for some, but for others, it could contribute to the aesthetic and upkeep concerns raised. The availability of "roomy spots for an overnight stay" mentioned by one reviewer contrasts with the small and poorly maintained site described by another, indicating potential variability in the quality of individual campsites.
Promotional information is scarce in the provided reviews. The campground's proximity to the VA motorsports arena could be considered a promotional point for racing enthusiasts in the local area. Similarly, the presence of a lake and pool, when open, could attract local families or individuals seeking water-based recreation. However, the negative feedback regarding cleanliness and site conditions significantly overshadows these potential benefits.
The phone numbers provided, (804) 861-0174 and +1 804-861-0174, offer a direct line of communication for local users to inquire about current conditions, availability, and specific site details. It would be advisable for potential visitors to call and ask detailed questions about the cleanliness of facilities, the condition of campsites, and any ongoing maintenance or litter control efforts before making a reservation.
In conclusion, for local users searching for "camping near me" in Petersburg, VA, Picture Lake Campground offers a potentially convenient location for those interested in the VA motorsports arena and, seasonally, a public access lake and pool. However, significant concerns have been raised regarding the cleanliness of the bathhouses, the upkeep of the campground, and the condition of some campsites. The presence of many full-time residents may impact the overall atmosphere and aesthetic. While one reviewer found it a "pleasant stay for two nights," another had an overwhelmingly negative experience. Local campers are strongly advised to weigh these contrasting reviews carefully and consider calling the provided phone number for more current and detailed information before choosing Picture Lake Campground for their next camping trip.

Picture Lake Campground Reviews
Nice roomy spot for an overnight stay in a good location. The Park itself appears to have MANY full timers who are not concerned with aesthetics; a litter control plan NEEDS to be implemented. I imagine it’s a popular spot for those interested in the very close Va motorsports arena; also for the public access lake and pool, which were closed due to season. Overall, a pleasant stay for two nights.
Apr 05, 2025 · Kathy ElkinsI have camped for years and in many, many different places. I have camped in extremely nice places, and just ok places. BUT THIS PLACE.... ATROCIOUS!!!! We drove fromTn . to visit our friends, the bath houses at this place were filthy, the showers were old and terribly stained, I thought the shower handles were going to fall off the wall when i tried to turn the water on. The one time I did use them, I had to clean it before I used it, I had to clean cigarette butts off the soap shelves and from the drain. There were no hooks to hang your towels or bath bag on. There was NO privacy, It was so bad that my husband and I packed our bags and went to my friends house to use their shower. The site we were on was only 2 foot from the road and directly in front of our camper was a huge speed bump so that all vehicles had to practically stop for it, most of the campers were permanent, and they were VERY unkept. The grassy area was only big enough to sit 3 or 4 chairs. the picnic table was practically falling apart.THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO POSITIVE THING I CAN SAY ABOUT THIS CAMPGROUND!We visited another campground down the road aways, Camptown Campground. we'll try that one next time,
Apr 23, 2025 · Rosa RsmseyI’ve been staying here for around 4 months now since I’ve been moved for work in Petersburg. It’s a fairly nice campground with a nice lake and friendly workers. It’s also close to many restaurants and anything else you would possibly need. The only gripe I have is the bathrooms definitely could use work. No privacy in the shower stalls, and the bath house could be cleaned more often.
Dec 04, 2024 · joshua mattoxBeautiful campground. Spaces are mostly level, gravel. Picnic table, fire pit, fishing, and a playground for the kids! We got there too late in the season for the pool, but it looks nice! We will definitely stay here again, 100% recommend.
Nov 08, 2024 · Christine TurnerFor the price you pay, you can't beat it. I travel for work and this is the most cost efficent place I've ever stayed. The staff is helpful and courteous as well.
