South 40 Campground Introduce
Looking for a convenient and comfortable camping spot close to home or while traveling through Virginia? South 40 Campground, located at 2809 Courtland Rd, Petersburg, VA 23805, offers an excellent option for local users searching under the category "camping near me," particularly those seeking an easily accessible overnight stay or a short-term camping location. Situated right off Interstate 95, this campground provides a clean and hassle-free experience for travelers and those looking for a quick getaway.
One of the primary advantages of South 40 Campground is its exceptional convenience for those traveling along I-95. Multiple reviewers have specifically mentioned stopping here twice while on their journey, highlighting its prime location just off the interstate. This accessibility makes it an ideal choice for weary travelers looking for a comfortable and safe place to rest for the night without venturing far from their route. The ease of access is a significant benefit for those on long road trips.
The campground itself is consistently described as clean, which is a crucial factor for any camper. Maintaining a clean environment contributes significantly to a positive and comfortable stay. Whether you're in a tent or an RV, knowing that the facilities are well-kept adds to the overall peace of mind. The individual campsites are noted to have ample room, providing sufficient space to set up your camping equipment comfortably. Additionally, the presence of fire pits at the sites allows campers to enjoy a traditional campfire experience, perfect for cooking, warmth, and creating a cozy ambiance in the evenings.
For families traveling with children, South 40 Campground offers amenities to keep the little ones entertained. While the pool was noted to be out of season during one reviewer's stay, the playground was available and successfully kept the kids busy for a while. Having a playground on-site is a valuable feature for families, providing a dedicated space for children to play and burn off energy, especially during travel stops.
South 40 Campground also appears to be accommodating to late arrivals. One reviewer mentioned that some folks came in after hours, and it seemed to be a hassle-free process for those whose trips were delayed. This flexibility can be particularly reassuring for travelers who may encounter unexpected delays on the road and need a reliable place to stay, even if they arrive later than anticipated.
The staff at South 40 Campground are described as friendly and accommodating, particularly when taking reservations over the phone. This positive initial interaction sets a welcoming tone for the stay. The presence of a "lovely pool" when in season is another significant amenity, offering a refreshing way to relax and cool down during warmer months. Clean restrooms and showers are also highlighted, reinforcing the campground's commitment to providing essential and well-maintained facilities for their guests.
While one reviewer mentioned not driving around the entire park, the section they stayed in at the front was reported to be well maintained. This suggests that the campground takes pride in the upkeep of its visible areas, contributing to a positive first impression for arriving guests. The campground's proximity to both I-95 and a gas station capable of fitting large RVs adds to its convenience for travelers with larger vehicles who need easy access to fuel and the interstate.
However, one recurring concern raised by a reviewer is the placement of full-time guests and contract workers at the back of the campground. This arrangement reportedly requires these individuals to drive their potentially loud trucks through the entire park as they leave for work, which can be disruptive to other campers who are there to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet. The reviewer suggests considering placing these longer-term residents at the front of the campground to minimize noise disturbance for short-term visitors. While this is a point of feedback, it's important to note that the reviewer still recommended the campground for short stays, indicating that the overall positive aspects outweigh this particular issue for transient campers.
Despite the potential for early morning noise from longer-term residents, another reviewer noted that after everyone settled in for the night, the campground was quiet, and the noise from the interstate was minimal. This suggests that while it's conveniently located near a major highway, the noise level is generally manageable and doesn't significantly detract from a restful night's sleep, especially later in the evening.
Based on the available reviews, South 40 Campground appears to be particularly well-suited for overnight stays and short-term visits, especially for those traveling along I-95. Its cleanliness, spacious sites, friendly staff, and convenient location make it a reliable choice for a quick and easy camping stop. The presence of a pool (in season) and a playground adds to its appeal for families. While there is a mention of potential noise from longer-term residents during their early departures, this seems to be more of a concern for those seeking extended stays and less of an issue for those just passing through.

Its spacious sites, fire pits, seasonal pool, playground, and friendly service make it a comfortable choice for overnight stays and short getaways. South 40 Campground Reviews
Stopped twice while traveling on I95. Great overnight spot right off the interstate. Clean campground. Sites have room and fire pits. Pool wasn’t in season but the playground kept the kids busy for a few. Some folks came in after hours, appears to be hassle free if your trip is delayed.
Apr 26, 2025 · Jason SchusslerFriendly and accommodating staff when we called for reservations. A lovely pool when in season. Clean restroom and showers. We didn't drive around the park to see other sites but the section we were in up front was well maintained. We stayed 2 nights passing through the area. Close to I 95 and a gas station that can fit large RVs.Our only complaint which seems to be true with all other campgrounds is they put the full time guests and contract workers in the back of the campground and they have to drive through the whole park with their loud trucks as they leave for work. Why not up front where they can warm up their trucks and leave without waking up the others who come to relax? After everyone settled in for the night, it was quiet. Interstate noise was minimal. Recommend for short stays.
Nov 30, 2024 · Joanne ShedrickThe policies created by the campground are ignorant and offensive. Dogs are allowed but certain breeds are restricted based on an ignorant stereotype that a species of dog automatically makes them aggressive. Their closed minded and inconsiderate polices make me wonder how they treat select groups of people that go there as well. Definitely don’t recommend due to the unprofessionalism. The campground was also filthy and littered with trash, and various other hazards to nature.
Mar 28, 2025 · El JefeThis is a great campground with easy access to I-95. A perfect stop on our way home.
Apr 17, 2025 · Lori PostNice, clean spot. We only stayed one night and were very pleased. Conveniently located off 95.
