When considering "camping near me," the environment and surrounding area play a significant role in the overall experience. Portage Lake Campground benefits immensely from its location within Waterloo Recreation Area, which is described by one reviewer as a "huge Park." This vast expanse of public land offers a diverse landscape with numerous lakes, forests, and trails, providing ample opportunities for hiking, fishing, boating, and wildlife observation. For local users, this proximity to a major recreation area is a significant advantage, offering a multitude of outdoor adventures right on their doorstep.
The campground itself is situated near Portage Lake, providing campers with lake access. While one reviewer noted that the beach is "a bit small," the presence of a beach still offers opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the waterfront. For families with young children, lake access can be a major draw when searching for "camping near me," providing a fun and refreshing way to spend their time outdoors.
For families with children, Portage Lake Campground appears to be well-equipped. Reviews highlight a "very nice" playground with separate areas for little kids and big kids. This thoughtful design allows children of different age groups to play safely and enjoy age-appropriate equipment. The presence of a well-maintained playground is a significant feature for local families looking for a campground where their children can stay entertained.
Nature enthusiasts and those who enjoy exploring on foot will appreciate the "plenty of trails" mentioned by a reviewer. Being located within Waterloo Recreation Area, Portage Lake Campground likely offers access to an extensive network of hiking and potentially biking trails that wind through the diverse terrain of the park. These trails provide opportunities for scenic walks, challenging hikes, and immersing oneself in the natural beauty of the Michigan landscape. For local users seeking "camping near me" with a focus on outdoor exercise and exploration, the trail access is a major asset.
In terms of facilities, Portage Lake Campground offers practical amenities for a comfortable stay. The bathrooms are noted to include separate shower rooms, which can enhance privacy and convenience for campers. This is a significant upgrade from communal shower facilities and is often appreciated by individuals and families alike.
However, it's important to consider all aspects of the campground based on the available reviews. One reviewer mentioned that the campsite they stayed in was "nice" but noted that there were "not many trees for cover." This suggests that during the summer months, tent camping might be hot due to limited shade. Local users planning to camp during warmer periods should be aware of this and consider bringing appropriate shade structures or choosing campsites that offer more natural cover if available.
Another reviewer provided insights into the layout and size of the campsites. They cautioned that the north loop, described as "improved"/paced sites, tends to have smaller sites with close proximity to neighbors. This information is valuable for local users with larger tents or RVs, as it suggests that space might be limited in this section of the campground. The reviewer also noted that many sites on the south loop are bigger, which could be a better option for those requiring more space. However, they also mentioned that some of the south loop sites are "pretty uneven" and might not be suitable for larger RVs. This highlights the importance of checking site details or potentially visiting the campground beforehand to assess the suitability for specific camping equipment.
The reviewer who provided details about the campsite sizes wisely refrained from suggesting favorite sites, instead recommending that potential campers "go check it out for yourself." This underscores the subjective nature of campsite preferences and the value of personal exploration when choosing a site that best meets individual needs.
For local users searching for "camping near me" that offers a gateway to the vast recreational opportunities of Waterloo Recreation Area, Portage Lake Campground provides a convenient option. Its proximity to Portage Lake, the presence of a nice playground, and access to numerous trails make it appealing to families and outdoor enthusiasts. The availability of separate shower rooms adds a level of comfort to the camping experience.
Promotional information for Portage Lake Campground aimed at local users could emphasize its location within Waterloo Recreation Area, highlighting the extensive hiking trails and lake access. For families, the "very nice" playground with separate areas for different age groups would be a key feature to promote. The clean and private shower facilities could also be highlighted as an amenity that enhances comfort.
Given the feedback about limited tree cover in some areas, promotional materials might advise campers to bring shade structures during the summer months. For those with specific campsite size requirements, it would be beneficial to encourage them to inquire about site dimensions or potentially reserve sites in the south loop known for being larger (while also noting the potential for uneven terrain).
Local users who enjoy exploring nature, engaging in water activities, and appreciate family-friendly amenities will find Portage Lake Campground a compelling option within a short drive. Its location within a significant state recreation area ensures a wealth of outdoor adventures, making it a worthwhile "camping near me" destination.
In conclusion, Portage Lake Campground in Grass Lake, MI, offers a local "camping near me" experience within the expansive Waterloo Recreation Area. Its environment provides lake access and numerous trails for outdoor exploration. The campground features a well-regarded playground and separate shower rooms, catering to families and individuals alike. While some campsites may have limited shade and vary in size and levelness, the overall appeal of being situated in a major recreation area with ample amenities makes Portage Lake Campground a strong contender for local camping enthusiasts.

Portage Lake Campground Reviews
Nice campsite. Not many trees for cover, imagine it would be hot tent camping during summer. Beach a bit small. Playground is very nice, separate little kids and big kids areas. Plenty of trails. Bathrooms include separate shower rooms. Waterloo is a huge Park.
Apr 21, 2025 · francisco roqueGreat little campground. Be warned the north loop "improved"/paced sites are on the small side, and your neighbors are close by. Many sites on the south loop are bigger, but some are pretty uneven and might not do well with bigger RVs .And no, I'm not going to suggest favorite sites. Go check it out for yourself.
Apr 20, 2025 · scott hewittNice campground. We stayed in the north loop, sites 22 and 23 for a cold early april weekend 2025. Not much going on this time of year (DNR still comes around to clean the bath house), but the north loop was about full for the weekend. Bath house is a newer modern style used by many state parks. Heat was on, showers were hot. I will say the "waterless" urinal in the mens room (the higher of the two) is a little too high. I am 6'3" and it was almost to tall for me. The lower one is probably about the right height and most young boys will struggle with that one. You can see they had been changed from a standard flush style to the waterless style, so i suspect that has something to do with the height. Paved sites were a bonus and appreciated this early in the season to help keep the mud/dirt out of the camper.
Apr 10, 2025 · Dave and CourtneyBeautiful huge sites. Some have cement pads, which are level. Great time had by all!
Apr 26, 2025 · Jill T.I've been going to this campground for years! Our camp host, Peggy, was amazing as always! This year, the mosquitos were horrible! Never have I ever had to put on spray as soon as I left my vehicle. The swim area is great! The Rangers are always helpful and kind. The dump station was clean, and I still need a trash can there, I think. Makes it easier to dispose of gloves or small trash. The only complaint I have is that the fore rings are too close to trailers. I feel like they should be off the cement pad. With most trailers having slide outs and awnings, red hots can pop and get on them. Bathrooms were clean, and showers were decent. Time for different shower heads, half of the one I used was clogged up. Volleyball court with sand would be nice and same with horseshoes. Kids love the playgrounds and the hills for their bikes.
