Portneuf Bend Campground Introduce
For local users searching for "camping near me" in the Lava Hot Springs, Idaho region, Portneuf Bend Campground, located at 9250 S Blaser Hwy, Lava Hot Springs, ID 83246, USA, offers a unique camping experience centered around river activities and access to nearby recreational trails. Reachable by phone at (208) 530-1595 or +1 208-530-1595, this campground caters to both RV and tent campers, although it's important to note some specific characteristics highlighted in customer reviews regarding its facilities and environment.
One of the primary draws of Portneuf Bend Campground, as indicated by multiple reviewers, is its easy access to the river, likely the Portneuf River. Campers have reported enjoying walking up the campground and then floating down the river in tubes, making it a convenient location for water-based recreation. Furthermore, it's mentioned that equipment rentals for river activities are available, suggesting that even those without their own gear can partake in floating. For local users searching for "camping near me" with a focus on river tubing and related activities, Portneuf Bend Campground appears to be well-suited.
The campground is described as a "great place to camp in a camp trailer or tent," indicating its suitability for various camping styles. This is positive for local users with different types of camping setups who are looking for "camping near me." The ease of getting in and out of the river is also highlighted as a benefit, further enhancing its appeal for those planning to spend time on the water.
The caretakers of the grounds have received positive feedback, with reviewers describing the "couple who take care of the grounds" as "super kind and helpful." Friendly and helpful staff can significantly improve the camping experience, providing assistance and creating a welcoming atmosphere for guests searching for "camping near me."
However, it is crucial for potential visitors to be aware of the limitations regarding bathroom facilities. Multiple reviews explicitly state that the bathrooms "only have pit toilets and no water, no showers." This is a significant factor for local users accustomed to more comprehensive amenities when "camping near me." Campers planning to stay at Portneuf Bend Campground should be prepared for these basic facilities and bring their own water for hygiene and other needs. The absence of showers might also be a consideration for longer stays.
Another environmental factor to consider is the campground's proximity to train tracks. Reviewers have noted that it is "right next to the train tracks and there are freight trains throughout the night." This could result in significant noise disturbance, particularly for light sleepers or those seeking a quiet and secluded "camping near me" experience. Potential visitors should weigh this factor based on their sensitivity to noise.
For RV campers, one reviewer advises bringing a "longer extension cord to plug in," suggesting that the placement of electrical hookups might require some extra length. This is a practical tip for RV owners considering Portneuf Bend Campground as their "camping near me" destination.
It is recommended to "make reservations," indicating that the campground can get busy, especially during peak seasons or weekends. Local users planning a trip should heed this advice to secure a spot, especially if they have specific site preferences.
Campers are also advised to bring "bug spray," suggesting that insects might be prevalent in the area, particularly near the river. Being prepared for potential insect issues is always a good practice when "camping near me," especially in riverside locations.
While the campground itself does not offer showers or extensive bathroom facilities, it does provide some basic necessities for purchase. Firewood is available for $6 per bag, and bags of ice can be purchased for $3. This is a convenient service for campers who need these items during their stay.
An additional feature that might appeal to specific local users is the proximity to "tons of dirt bike trails nearby." This makes Portneuf Bend Campground a potential base camp for those interested in off-road мотоспорт adventures. One reviewer expressed regret for not bringing their dirt bikes or four-wheelers, indicating the accessibility of these activities from the campground. For local users searching for "camping near me" with access to outdoor adventure sports, this could be a significant advantage.
In terms of the environment, Portneuf Bend Campground offers a riverside setting with easy access for water recreation. The surrounding area also provides opportunities for hiking and, notably, dirt biking. However, potential visitors should be prepared for the basic bathroom facilities and the noise from the nearby train tracks. The friendly caretakers and the convenience for river tubing are positive aspects of the environment and service.
Regarding promotional information, the reviews do not mention any specific discounts or special offers. Local users interested in potential promotions should contact the campground directly using the provided phone numbers or check if they have an online presence with booking information. The fact that equipment rentals for river tubing are available could be considered a service offering, but no specific pricing details are provided in the reviews.
In conclusion, Portneuf Bend Campground offers a unique "camping near me" experience for local users who prioritize river access for tubing and proximity to dirt bike trails. The friendly caretakers are a definite plus. However, it is essential to be aware of the limited bathroom facilities (pit toilets only, no water or showers) and the potential noise from frequent train traffic. RV campers should consider bringing a longer extension cord. Making reservations is recommended, and bringing bug spray is advisable. While basic necessities like firewood and ice are available for purchase, potential visitors should come prepared with their own water and toiletries due to the lack of running water at the bathroom facilities. For the right type of camper – one who values the river and trails over extensive amenities and is not bothered by train noise – Portneuf Bend Campground could be a worthwhile option for their "camping near me" needs.

Portneuf Bend Campground Reviews
Bathrooms only have pit toilets and no water, no showers. This campground is for RVs mostly and not tent campers. It is right next to the train tracks and there are freight trains throughout the night. We did see people having fun walking up the campground and then floating down in tubes and walking back up. You can rent all kinds of equipment.
Jul 24, 2024 · Suzy SpellGreat place to camp in a camp trailer or tent. Easy to float the river and to get in and out. The couple who take care of the grounds are super kind and helpful. Just make sure you bring a longer extension cord to plug in. We would recommend making reservations and bringing bug spray. They have bathrooms but no showers. You can purchase firewood for $6 & bags of ice for $3. Also, there are tons of dirt bike trails nearby. We wish we would have brought our dirt bikes or four-wheelers, maybe next time. :)
Jun 18, 2024 · Jessica CroftGreat spot in town, beautiful campground right on the river. We stayed in a giant group site that was away from everyone else, so super private and a great atmosphere! There were a lot of bugs, but that's anywhere by a river, bring bug spray. There is also a loud train that rolls through the camp during the night, but after the first night, I didn't care too much. If you are a light sleeper, bring some ear plugs. Beautiful dark skies at night, I would stay again.
Jul 23, 2023 · Steve DeverallThis campground changed owner/management a few years back. Any poor reviews from 4 years ago should be ignored, the new owners are incredible and made our camping experience super easy. This campground is INCREDIBLE! The views and access to the river are unbeatable. They are constantly improving the area, this is already the best campground in Lava.If you are looking for things to do while in Lava, Portneuf also has an equipment rental tent where you can rent anything from tubes to side by sides at super affordable rates.I highly recommend staying at this campground if you are looking to camp in Lava Hot Springs.
Jun 23, 2024 · Josh BothellAn excellent and beautifully maintained campground. I like that it quietly sits just right outside the town of Lava. There is lots of grassy area at every campsite for the kids and fur babies to run around and play. The camp host’s Jeff and Penny are super friendly. Our family has enjoyed coming to this campground for the past 2 years and this will always be our favorite in Lava Hot Springs.
