Portneuf River Lower Sportsman Access Introduce
For local users searching within the "camping near me" category, Portneuf River Lower Sportsman Access, located on S Blaser Hwy in Lava Hot Springs, Idaho, offers a unique opportunity for free camping along the picturesque Portneuf River. Situated just 10 minutes from downtown Lava Hot Springs, this campground provides a beautiful natural setting surrounded by mountains in every direction. While it offers a different experience compared to paid campgrounds with full amenities, its cleanliness, scenic location, and proximity to attractions make it a noteworthy option for budget-conscious campers and nature enthusiasts.
The environment of Portneuf River Lower Sportsman Access is a major draw, as highlighted by multiple reviewers. The campground is nestled along the Portneuf River, offering potential for riverside enjoyment and the soothing sounds of flowing water. The fact that it is surrounded by mountains in every direction creates a truly beautiful and immersive natural setting, providing stunning views and a sense of being away from the hustle and bustle. One reviewer who stayed in a 24 ft trailer confirmed that there is room for both the trailer and a tow vehicle at most sites. The terrain of most sites includes "mostly level gravel parking," which is beneficial for setting up both RVs and tents. Additionally, many sites feature fire pits, enhancing the traditional camping experience.
In terms of services and features, Portneuf River Lower Sportsman Access offers basic amenities suitable for a free campground. There is one vault toilet located in the day-use parking area, which serves the camping area. Additionally, along the river, there are three picnic tables with covers, providing shaded areas for eating and relaxing. It's important to note that, being a free sportsman access site, it does not offer the extensive amenities typically found in paid campgrounds, such as water or electrical hookups at individual sites. Campers should come prepared with their own water and power solutions if needed.
One reviewer noted that approximately nine sites were available, with three of them equipped with a picnic table. A more recent review indicated that the layout might have changed, with about seven spots that are primarily back-in or suitable for tent camping. This suggests that the number and type of available spots might vary, and it's advisable for potential campers, especially those with larger RVs, to assess the current layout upon arrival or seek recent information from online forums or local camping resources if available.
A natural environmental consideration mentioned by a reviewer is the presence of "Mosquitos in the evening as expected by a river, grasshoppers during the day." Campers should be prepared for insects, especially during warmer months, and bring appropriate insect repellent. This is a common aspect of riverside camping and is generally manageable with the right precautions.
Another significant environmental factor to be aware of is the proximity of train tracks, as "the train tracks border the campground." While one reviewer found that "the noise from the trains is not excessive and did not interfere with my sleep," another reviewer mentioned that trains "were not too bad however they did block us from leaving in the morning for about a half hour while another train passed." This indicates that train traffic can be a factor, both in terms of noise and potential temporary blockage of access. Light sleepers might want to consider this and bring earplugs or white noise machines if sensitive to sound. The road noise, however, is described as "minimal," which is a positive aspect.
Promotional information is not explicitly provided, as this is a free campground. The primary promotion comes from the natural beauty of the location, its cleanliness, and its convenient proximity to Lava Hot Springs. The fact that it is a free camping option along a river and surrounded by mountains is a significant draw for budget-conscious travelers and those seeking a more rustic camping experience.
For local users searching for "camping near me" that offers a free and scenic option, Portneuf River Lower Sportsman Access is definitely worth considering. Its location just 10 minutes from downtown Lava Hot Springs provides easy access to the town's attractions, including the famous hot springs, restaurants, and other amenities, while still offering a natural and somewhat secluded camping experience. The beautiful mountain views and the riverside setting enhance the appeal.
However, potential campers should be prepared for the limited amenities typical of a free sportsman access site. The availability of only a vault toilet and a few picnic tables means that campers need to be self-sufficient in terms of water, power, and waste management. The presence of mosquitoes and the potential for train noise and temporary blockage are also factors to keep in mind.
Given the limited information and the potential for changes in the campground layout, local users planning to camp at Portneuf River Lower Sportsman Access might find it beneficial to look for more recent reviews or information online, perhaps on camping forums or local outdoor recreation websites. Since it is a free site, reservations are unlikely, and availability might be on a first-come, first-served basis. Arriving early, especially during peak season, might be advisable to secure a good spot.
In conclusion, Portneuf River Lower Sportsman Access offers a unique free camping experience in a beautiful riverside and mountain-surrounded environment near Lava Hot Springs, ID. Its cleanliness and proximity to town are significant advantages. However, campers should be aware of the limited amenities, the potential for insects and train noise, and the possibility of temporary access blockage due to trains. For local users seeking a scenic and budget-friendly "camping near me" option and who are comfortable with more rustic conditions, this sportsman access site provides a valuable opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

Portneuf River Lower Sportsman Access Reviews
This is a clean free campground along the Portneuf River and just 10 minutes from downtown Lava Hot Springs. The campground is surrounded by mountains in every direction, very beautiful setting. We stayed in a 24 ft trailer. Room for tow vehicle and TT. Most sites have mostly level gravel parking and fire-pits. Three of the ~9 sites have a picnic table. There is one vault toilet in the day use parking area and three picnic tables with cover along the river. Mosquitos in the evening as expected by a river, grasshoppers during the day. Yes, the train tracks border the campground. The noise from the trains is not excessive and did not interfere with my sleep, road noise is minimal.
Aug 21, 2024 · Erica GordanLooks like it used to have more spread out locations. Now there are about 7 spots that are all back in or tent camping. There's a vault toilet and a shelter in the day use area. Trains were not too bad however they did block us from leaving in the morning for about a half hour while another train passed.
Apr 25, 2024 · Aaron CurrieVery nice little fishing/camping spot; would be better if people would pick up their trash.
Mar 27, 2025 · Samuel FirebaughThis camping area is free it's a 10 minute drive from Lava Hot Springs , there are about 10 spots that fill up quick there is a vault toilet and a day use area with no tables just extra parking. The area is very buggy when we were there over Father's day weekend there were millions of tiny knats in the evening. The Portneuf River is deep in most areas and is great for fishing and you can see people floating the river. The down fall of this convenient campground is that there is a busy railroad close by and trains go by at least every hour, 24 hrs.a day .
Jun 21, 2022 · Stacy DuttThis camp is not the same as Google Maps shows. It is nice, 7 spots but close to entrance/train tracks with a definitive fence around it.The trains pass all hours and do blow horns. Did not deter me from camping here for multiple nights. So close to town and fantastic river fishing spot.
