Portuguese Joe Campground Introduce
Are you searching for an affordable and scenic camping experience near you in the Lone Pine, California area? Portuguese Joe Campground, located at 436 S Washington St, Lone Pine, CA 93545, presents itself as an "excellent small size campground" and a "great cheap campground" according to recent visitors. For those exploring options under the category 'Camping Near Me,' Portuguese Joe offers a blend of basic amenities, natural beauty, and convenient access to the town of Lone Pine. Let's delve into the details of its environment, services, and features based on the available reviews.
The environment of Portuguese Joe Campground is characterized by its "wonderful views on the mountains and clear sky!" This picturesque setting provides a stunning backdrop for your camping trip, allowing you to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Lone Pine region. Adding to the ambiance is a stream that "runs all year round through the center of the campground." The presence of flowing water can enhance the tranquility of the camping experience and provide a natural element to enjoy. Furthermore, the campground offers direct access to "off-road trails from your site," making it an appealing option for those who enjoy hiking, off-roading, or exploring the surrounding terrain right from their campsite.
In terms of services and amenities, Portuguese Joe Campground provides essential facilities for a comfortable stay. Each campsite is equipped with a "fire ring & picnic table," which are standard and highly valued features for cooking, gathering, and enjoying meals outdoors. Additionally, there are "two bathrooms side by side," indicating the presence of restroom facilities for campers' convenience. A "water spigot" is also available, offering a water source within the campground. However, it's crucial to note that this water "isn't drinkable," so campers will need to bring their own potable water supply. The campground also provides "trash and recycling facilities on site," although one reviewer noted an issue with these being "overloaded and not emptied for the week we were there," which is a point of concern regarding maintenance during their visit.
A significant feature of Portuguese Joe Campground is its reservation policy. According to a review, "Half of the spots are reservations only. The other half is first come, first served." This dual system offers flexibility for campers. Those who prefer to plan ahead and secure their spot can take advantage of the reservation system, while spontaneous travelers have a chance to find a site on a first-come, first-served basis. This is an important piece of information for those considering a stay, as it dictates how they should approach securing a campsite.
The basic nature of the campground is further indicated by the mention of "pit toilets" at the campsites. Pit toilets are non-flushable toilet facilities commonly found in more rustic campgrounds. While they serve a necessary function, they differ from flush toilets and may require a different level of comfort and expectation from campers. The presence of pit toilets suggests a more primitive camping experience compared to campgrounds with modern restroom buildings.
Despite the basic amenities, the affordability of Portuguese Joe Campground is a major draw. It is described as a "great cheap campground," making it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers looking to experience the Lone Pine area without breaking the bank. The combination of scenic views and a low price point adds significant value to the overall experience.
Another notable feature is the proximity of the campground to the town of Lone Pine. Located about "1 mile away," the town offers easy access to "everything you need." This convenience is a significant advantage, allowing campers to quickly resupply on groceries, fuel, or any other necessities without a long drive. It also provides opportunities to explore the local shops and restaurants in Lone Pine.
To summarize the key features of Portuguese Joe Campground: it offers a small, affordable camping experience with wonderful mountain views and clear skies. A year-round stream flows through the campground, enhancing its natural appeal. Campers will find a fire ring, picnic table, and pit toilets at their sites. A non-potable water spigot is available. The campground operates on a dual reservation and first-come, first-served system for its campsites. Trash and recycling facilities are provided on-site, though one report indicates potential maintenance issues. The campground's location just one mile from Lone Pine offers excellent access to town amenities. Additionally, off-road trails are accessible directly from the campsites for outdoor enthusiasts.
Considering the platform category 'Camping Near Me,' Portuguese Joe Campground fits the bill for those seeking an accessible and budget-friendly outdoor experience in a scenic location. The combination of reservation and first-come, first-served sites caters to different planning styles. The presence of basic amenities like fire rings, picnic tables, and restrooms ensures a degree of comfort, while the proximity to town adds convenience. The stunning mountain views and the year-round stream contribute to a pleasant natural environment, and the access to off-road trails appeals to adventure seekers.
While there is no explicit promotional material provided, the positive reviews highlighting its affordability, scenic views, and convenient location serve as strong implicit endorsements. The fact that it's a popular spot, with people coming from "all over to fill their water jugs" at the non-potable spigot (presumably for other uses like washing), suggests that it is a known and utilized resource in the area. However, potential campers should be aware of the basic nature of the facilities, particularly the pit toilets and the non-drinkable water, and come prepared accordingly.
In conclusion, Portuguese Joe Campground offers a great option for local users looking for an affordable and conveniently located camping experience near Lone Pine. Its scenic mountain views, the presence of a year-round stream, and the easy access to town are significant advantages. The dual reservation system provides flexibility for planning. While the amenities are basic, including pit toilets and non-potable water, the low cost and the access to off-road trails make it an attractive choice for budget-conscious outdoor enthusiasts. Be sure to check the availability for reservations if you prefer to secure your spot in advance, or try your luck with the first-come, first-served sites. Come prepared with your own drinking water and be mindful of potential maintenance issues with the trash facilities based on recent feedback.

Portuguese Joe Campground Reviews
Excellent small size campground. You got fire ring & picnic table. There are two bathrooms side by side. There is also a water spigot so you don't have to bring water, but it isn't drinkable. The town is about 1 mile away that has everything you need. Wonderful views on the mountains and clear sky!
Mar 27, 2025 · Florida LifeGreat cheap campground. Half of the spots are reservations only. The other half is first come, first served.Campsites have pit toilets and one water spigot that people come from all over to fill their water jugs. Each site has a fire pit, bbq, and picnic table. A stream runs all year round through the center of the campground. Trash and recycling facilities are on site, but we're overloaded and not emptied for the week we were there. You can take off-road trails from your site.
Nov 19, 2023 · Tom ClarkReally loud at night time here, this campground allows super loud Mexican off-road cars to come through with loud music
Mar 29, 2025 · E RVery cool little campground with a cute little creek running through.
Jan 23, 2025 · John BrownAs people have mentioned this is a bare bones campsite. Some spots are bigger than others and some have large trees overhanging them making it hard for larger rigs to utilize. With that being said, most of the spots are well shaded, bathrooms were clean, stream running through the middle was very relaxing. On a side note, there are a few local dogs, not sure if they're stays or not, that poke around the site from time to time making it not the best if you have a smaller dog. Also, decent amount of ants so just be aware and shake off your gear before packing up.
