Tuttle Creek Campground

Lone Pine, CA 93545, USA

4.0
We went on the 2nd week of April on a Friday and it was packed! We were lucky enough to snag campsite no. 78 after searching all 83 sites. It's first come, first serve. The gods of camping were watching over us because 78 is actually one of the bigger sites. You could fit a large tent and maybe 2 medium-sized tents in it. The creek was also behind us. The water was clean, full of trout and it provided some ambient sound for sleep. It was also a full moon so it provided some great nighttime shots of the sierra Nevada mountains even with just your smartphone.Just be cautious if you're tent camping. It can get pretty windy all of a sudden after a few hours of calm. Make sure you have your tent stakes. We had to use ours and put rocks on top of it.There was no water available and the dump station was still closed. Vault toilets were clean. In summary, despite the wind and no water, we thoroughly enjoyed this campground. For 10 dollars a night and with the great views and ambient sound of the creek, it's hard to beat! - Joe Joe H

Tuttle Creek Campground Introduce

For outdoor enthusiasts searching for "Camping Near Me" in the breathtaking Eastern Sierra region of California, Tuttle Creek Campground stands out as a highly sought-after destination. Located in Lone Pine, CA 93545, this Bureau of Land Management (BLM) campground offers a rustic and incredibly scenic camping experience, with direct access to the natural beauty of the Sierra Nevada mountains. For inquiries, campers can reach out via phone at (760) 872-5008 or mobile at +1 760-872-5008.

Environment and Setting

Tuttle Creek Campground is nestled in a high desert environment at an elevation of approximately 5500 feet. The most striking feature of the campground is its unparalleled views of the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains, which provide a dramatic backdrop for every campsite. Visitors consistently rave about the scenic beauty, with the towering peaks creating stunning vistas, especially during sunrise and sunset, and under a full moon. The campground derives its name from Tuttle Creek, which runs through or alongside many of the sites. The presence of the creek is a significant draw, offering clean water, the potential for trout fishing, and the soothing ambient sound of flowing water, which contributes to a peaceful sleeping environment.

The campground comprises 81 RV/tent sites. These sites are generally hard-packed, providing a sturdy surface for setting up. While the views are spectacular, it's important for campers to be aware that the area can experience sudden strong winds, especially after periods of calm. Tent campers are particularly advised to come prepared with robust tent stakes and be ready to reinforce their setups with rocks for added security. The natural, unimproved setting means that sites are not always perfectly level, requiring campers, especially those in RVs, to be prepared to level their vehicles.

Services and Amenities

As a BLM campground, Tuttle Creek offers a more primitive camping experience compared to full-service private campgrounds, but it provides essential amenities for a comfortable stay. Each campsite typically includes a fire ring, perfect for campfires and cooking, and a picnic table, providing a convenient surface for meals and gear. The sites are predominantly back-in, and while many can accommodate RVs, larger fifth wheels or motorhomes over 35 feet might find maneuvering challenging due to narrow roads and sites positioned at 90-degree angles. However, smaller RVs and pop-ups generally fit well.

Important to note is the availability of water and dump station services. While the campground does have a dump station, it operates with a $10 fee and, as noted by past visitors, may not be open year-round, particularly in early spring. Similarly, direct access to potable water can be limited or unavailable, especially outside peak season. Campers should plan to bring their own water supply or verify current water availability before arriving. Despite these limitations, the campground does provide vault toilets, which are generally reported to be clean and well-maintained, an essential amenity for any camping trip.

Features and Booking Information

One of the defining features of Tuttle Creek Campground is its "first-come, first-serve" policy. There are no reservations accepted, meaning campers must arrive and claim an available site. This can lead to the campground being "packed," especially during popular times like weekends in spring or fall, as highlighted by a visitor who had to search all 83 sites to find an opening on a Friday in April. This system necessitates early arrival, particularly for those seeking specific or larger sites. For instance, site number 78 was noted as being particularly spacious, capable of accommodating a large tent and potentially two medium-sized tents, with the added bonus of the creek running directly behind it.

The affordability of Tuttle Creek is another significant feature. At just $10 per night, it offers exceptional value for money, especially considering the stunning views and serene environment. This low fee makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious campers looking to maximize their outdoor experience without breaking the bank. The campground also supports the enjoyment of the natural surroundings, with the creek being a focal point for relaxation and potentially fishing for trout, while the open skies and clear air make it ideal for stargazing and night photography, particularly during a full moon.

Promotional Information and Stay Experience

Tuttle Creek Campground primarily promotes itself through its natural beauty, affordability, and the classic, unimproved camping experience it offers. It appeals to a wide range of campers, from seasoned tent enthusiasts to those with smaller RVs, who prioritize scenic views and a peaceful environment over extensive amenities. The consistent positive feedback, despite the occasional lack of water or challenging wind conditions, underscores the overall enjoyment visitors derive from their stays. The "can't beat the view" sentiment is a recurring theme, emphasizing the campground's unique selling proposition.

For anyone searching "Camping Near Me" in the vicinity of Lone Pine, CA, and especially those drawn to the allure of the Sierra Nevada, Tuttle Creek Campground offers an authentic high-desert camping adventure. It’s perfect for those who are self-sufficient, appreciate minimalist amenities, and prioritize spectacular natural scenery and quiet reflection. While preparing for potential wind and limited water access is crucial, the reward is an unforgettable camping experience with unparalleled mountain views and the soothing presence of a mountain creek. Its first-come, first-serve nature adds an element of spontaneity to the adventure, making every successful site grab feel like a small victory guided by the "gods of camping."
